LaHhangr, Ga , Oct. 4, 180!).
Rev. S. P. Callaway: Dear Bin,—
Please be so kind hs to publish the
following extract from a letter writ
ten by tbe wise, great and good Dr.
John Newton to one of hi3 young lady
friends:
"The circumstance of your being
seen at the play bouse has nothing at
all mysterious In it; as you eay you
have not been there these six or seven
yeers, It was neither more nor leas
than a mistake. I heard you had been
there within two yearn; I am gla I to
find I was misinformed. I think there
ts no harm In your supposing that of
the many thousands who frequent
public diversions, some may In other
respeots be better than yourself: but
hope your humble and charitable
construction of their mistake will
not lead you to extenuate the evil of
those diversions in themselves; for
though I am persuaded, that a few
who know bettor what to do with
themselves, are, for want of conside
ration, drawn iu to expose themselves
lu such places, yet I am well satisfied
that, if there la any practice lu this
land sinful, attendance on the play
house is properly and eminently so.
The theatres are fountains and means
of vice; I had almost said, in the
same manner and degree as the ordi
nances of the gospel are the means of
gmoe: and 1 can hardly think there
is a Christian upon earth who would
dare to be seen there, if the nature
and effects of the theatre were prop
erly set before him. Dr. Wither
spoon of Scotland has written an ex
cellent piece upon the stage, or rather
against it, which I wish every persoD,
who makes the least pretence to fear
God, had an opportunity of perusing
I cannot judge much more favorably
of Bauelagb, Vauxhall, and all the
innumerable train of dissipations, by
which the god of this world blinds the
eyes of multitudes, lest the lig-it of
the glorious gospel should shiue In
upon them. What an awful aspec;
upon the present times have such
texts as Isaiah 22,12 to 14, 3:12, Amos
6:3 to G, James 4:4! I wish you there
fore not to plead tor any of them, but
use all your influence to make them
shunned as pest houses and danger
ous nuisances to precious souls; espe
cially, if you know any who you hope,
in the rnaiD, are seriously disposed,
who yet venture themselves in those
purlieus of Satan, endeavor earnestly
and faithfully to undeoeive tuem.
The time is short: eternity at the
door; was there do other evil In these
vai.i amusements than the loss of
precious time, but alas! their name Is
legion, we have not leisure to regard
and, blessed be God! we need them
not, Tbe gospel opens a source of
purer, sweeter, and more substantial
pleasures; we are Invited to commun
ion with God; we are called to share
in the theme of angels; the
songs of heaven, and the wonders of
redeeming love are laid open to our
view.
Tbe Lord himself is waiting to be
gracious, waiting with promises and
pardou9 in his hands; well mav we
bid adieu to the perishing pleasures
of sin well may we pity those who can
find pleasure iD those places where He
is shut out; where his name is only
mentioned to be profaned; wher.. bis
commandments are not only broken
butin8ulted; where sinners proclaim
their shame, as in Sodom, an at
tempt not to hide it, where at be3t
wickedness is wrapped up iu disguise
of delicacy to make it mo-e Insinuat
ing; and nothing Is offensive that is
not grossly and impolitely indecent.”
* « » «.
"When iniquity'abounds, the love
of many waxes cold; and we have
reason to fear the Lord’s hand is
lifted up in displeasure at our provo
cations. May he help us to set loose
to all below, and to be found watching
unto prayer for grace to keep our gar
ments uudellied, and to be faithful
witnesses for him in our places!”
Wrinkles, and hollow cheeks, and
dull, sunken eyes, don’t always mean
that a woman’s old. Half the time,
they only show that she’s overworked
or suffering. To such women, to
every woman who is tired or Hfflicted,
Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription
safely and certainly bangs back
health and strength. It’s a legitimate
medicine that cures; a tonic that
invigorates and builds up; a nervine
that soothes and strengthens. For
all tbe derangements, irregularities
and weaknesses peculiar to women, it
is the only guaranteed remedy. It It
doesn’t benefit or cure, you have your
money back.
It won’t do to experiment with Oa
tarrh. There’s the constant danger
of driving It to the lungs. You can
have a perfeot and permanent cure
with Dr. Sage’s Catarrh Remedy.
