Judge Martin, oi Pulaski, Makes
Able Charge to Grand Jury.
The recent, charge by Judge
Martin, of Pulaski county, to the
grand jury has created state-wide
sensation. The charge is one of
the most able ever delivered from
a Georgia bench.
We give below a few extracts as
published in the daily press. Re
garding gambling, Judge Martin
said:
“I charge you that society peo
ple, be they male or female, who
form social clubs and meet from
tune to time at the homes of the
members and play whist, progres
sive euchre, llinch, trail, bunco or
any other game with cards or like
devices for valuable prizes pur
chased with funds to which the
players have contributed, are as
much guilty of violating the law
against gambling as the veriest
plebians who hover around a
lij^itwood knot fire and play sev
en up, or skin for the paltry pen
nies and nickels, and the person
knowingly permitting such play
ing at his or her house is as guilty
of the offense of keeping and
maintaining a gambling house, as
is the proprietor of the den in a
back alley where gambling is prac
ticed. ‘Quit you like men, be
strong,’ and when weighed in the
balance of duty be found not
wanting. Strike at this evil in
high places as well as in low
places with all your might. \ , >s
not less criminal to play for a
silver card case than for a plain
silver dollar as it comes from the
mint.”
Statisticians declare that over
per cent of the embezzlements
and defalcations are traceable to
gambling.
Judge Martin scored the viola
tors of the cigarette law. He says
that this law is flagrantly violated
in Hawkinsvillo daily, judging
from the minors seen putting
away at t he obnoxious cigarette.
The disturbing of public wor
ship was given a share of his at-
iontion, ns also were the rail
roads. “The railroads,” he says,
‘‘have no more right (o run freight
and excursions on Sundae tlmn
the farmer his plow or tho mer
chant Ins store. This law is but a 1
refrain from the divino law pio*
inulgated amid the thunders and
lightnings of Mount Sinai.
MSiTSHKS VAUHANCY.
“Vagrancy,” he Hays, “is nj
deep and widening stream increas
ing in volume as it rolls its tur
bulent and corrupt waters into
the abyss of waste, desolation, I
ruin and crime. It. is the duty of
every sheriff, town and state of-1
ficers of similar character to aid
in upholding the vagrancy law.”
“Inforoe this law and where
briars and weeds now run riot the
fleecy staple and golden grain w ill
wave to brighten and cheer the
unreliability of labor. You will
stop the depredations of our lar
ders by dishonest cooks who feed
the idle Lotharios. You will stop
the congregating in dens where
crimes are incubated and hatched
out.

Cottonseed Meal for Cows.
As much as five pounds of cotton
seed meal may he fed to milk cows
per day In Home cases with good re
sults and profit; but, as a rule, tho
amount should not be more than one
to three pounds. Cal tie will eat It
readily without its being mixed with
other grain or material, but Is Is much
better to feed It with other grains or
chaffed roughage or sprinkled over the
uncut hay that has been dampened. If
the cotton seed and cottonseed meal
can be readily obtained and the cotton
seed Is cheap and other grain high, a
mixture of the seed and meal will be
a more desirable ration than either
feed alone.—Oklahoma Exueriuient

New Wood Seasoning.
The ‘‘powelllzation’’ of wood Is a
new process reported from England for
seasoning wood quickly for immedi
ate use by saturating It with a solu
tion of beet sugar and then drying it
with artificial heat. The treatment Is
said also to greatly increase the
strength and the durability of the
wood. The timber so treated resists
dry rot. The wood is no longer po
rous and, therefore, more sanitary for
such uses as street paving blocks.
