TIIK YOU.N i MAN WHO DRINKS.
Tim time is coming very fast-
indeed, it lias already arrived
our commercial life when a young I
man who has habits of intemper- j
mice is narrowing very rapidly i
the possible range of openings in |
which he may make a living.
Fifteen years ago the train mas- :
ter on a division of one of our |
large railroads in America told
me, he sat in his <■ Hione day
and saw a freight train stand for
two hours waiting for a number
of the train crew to recover from
intoxication. When the men were
able to handle the train it moved
out of the yard. Now, the train
master said, if the brakeman or
any other of the train crew were
found under the influence of
liquor, or if they were seen even
to enter a saloon, they were in
stantly discharged. The idea of
keeping a whole train waiting for
a man to recover from drunken
ness would seem perfectly absurd
to tho railroad corporation now.
The time will come when such an
idea will seem equally absurd in
the army.
A young man who lost hi* posi
tion in an oflice of this same com
pany came to me last year and
begged th.it I would use my in-
lluenee to have him taken back
by the superintendent of the di
vision. He frankly confessed he
had been (Inink, and was unable
to report for duty one day, but
the next, morning he was at It is
desk. When he appeared lie re
received his dismissal. He ac
knowledged his fault, and prom
ised the superintendent it would
never occur again, oll'ering to h t
the road take his wages and pay
them to his aged father and
moth •!'. lie pleaded that this was
his first offence,
I went with an influential citi
zen to tlie head of the department
where the young man had Loon
employed, and we stated his case
and pleaded for a second trial,
hut tho superintendent simply
said: “This railroad is
not in the business of reforming
drunkards or reclaiming voting
men. Last experience has taught
us it is useless for us to take
young men back in this way.—
Selected.
It is significant of a growing
public sentiment against liquor
drinking that the use of intoxi
cants by railway employes is be
ing more and more strictly for
bidden by tlie railway companies.
One of the new rules promulgated
by the New York Interborough
Company absolutely excludes
from employment any man who
drinks intoxicating liquors.
“A IIkavkn of Ovk Homk.”
Not long ago a man was called
to an educational position of
great honor, one that involved
larger social obligations than he
and his wife had been accustom
ed to meet. She shrank from the
new duties which would be laid
upon her, chiefly from a sense of
not having kept pace, intellec
tually, with her husband during
their years of married life. Their
income had been small, and she
had been her own housemaid as
well as a devoted mother to their
three boys. This left little lei
sure for reading or study, and she
was conscious that her husband
had outstripped her in mental
growth.
