Will the new year bring back to me
The ships that I’ve sent out to sen?
In the first faint flush of the break
o’ day,
I sent my ships sailing away, away;
My raid of my dream-ships have
been wrecked,
When the clouds were rosy and foam
flecked,
My ships are sailing on an unknown
sea
Oh! when will my ships come back
to me?
The noondays sun shone so bright,
But never a sail was there in sight;
Have my ships anchored in a foreign
Clime?
Fate answers—-wait—all in good
time,
\oars, days, life ebbs away,
And still I linger on the quay,
With the thousand desires I’ve sent
out to sea
Surely, some must come back to me.
T’is evening, and all is white and
clear,
’Tis the closing of the old old year,
The year is ended—my work is done.
With folded hands I listen for the
sunset gun.
Will it tell me my ships are coming
in?
And will the cargo be gold, silver or
tin?
High in the sky is the "vesper star, 1
No ships are coming across the har
bor bar.
