NATIONAL ANTHEMS WHICH
INSPIRE FIGHTING NATIONS
(From The St. Louis Republic).
Midst the shrieking of the shrapnel
and the deadly whirring of the ma
chine guns at Liege, the German Uhl
ans went to the slaughter with the
“Waeht Am Rhine” on their lips, ac
cording to news dispatches.
The national anthems play no smull
part on the battlefield. Thousands of
Frenchmen have died singing the
• Marsellaise," and soldiers of all na
tions have been spurred to deeds of
great patriotism under the inspira
tion of the songs of their fatherland.
During the course of the European
war, many references probubly will be
made in the news dispatches to the
national hymns of the various eoun-
tries involved. The Republic has col
lected those thut are best known and
herewith prints their words:
FRANCE.
The
Ye sons of France, nwuke to glory,
The sun of vict’ry soon will rise:
Tho’ the tyrant’s standard all gory
Is up real’d in Pride to the skies.
Is upreur’d in Pride to the skies.
Do ye not hear in ev’ry village
Fierce soldiers who spread war’s
ulurrns?
Who even in our sheltering arms
Slay our sons and give our home to
pillage!
CHORUS
To arms, ye brave, to arms!
We’ll form battalions strong;
March on, march on.
Their blood Impure shall bathe
our thresholds soon.
And would that horde of slavish min
ions
Conspire our freedom to o’erthrow ?
Say for whom those graves were in
tended
Which their craft prepured long
og°, . ,
Which their craft prepured long
ugo.
What righteous rage now should ex
cite us,
For Frenchmen what share is so
great ?
That even dare to meditate
To enslave, but thus they’ll unite
us! .. M
CHORUS
Ye tyrants all, and traitor, tremble.
Ye whom each faction loads with
blame;
Soon your schemes shall be reward
ed,
You’ll be paid the price of your
shame,
You’ll be paid the price of your
shame.
We all will be soldiers to meet you,
And if our young heroes must fall,
Our land will reproduce them all,
Stronger yet and ready to defeat
you!
CHORUS
O sacred love of home and country,
Do thou direct each vengeful blade.
Liberty, so sought and so cherish’d,
In thy cause now lend us thine aid,
In thy cause now lend us thine aid.
Beneath our dag may mighty vict’ry
O’erwhelm all their hosts at thy
call;
And grant our cruel foes may fall
As they see our triumph and thy
glory.
CHORUS
May patriot love and friendship glow
ing
Remain the object we desire.
May each spirit ever be lighted,
r With the flame they both can in
spire,
With the flame they both can in
spire.
All may be won: be but united,
Our foes we can crush ‘neath our
feet;
No more will Frenchmen then repeat
That dread cry which hath our
land affrighted.
CHORUS

f* GERMANY.
The Watch on the Rhine.
(Die Watcht Am Rhein.)
A roar like thunder strikes the ear,
Like clang of arms or breakers
I H i! ■ f
Push forward for the German Rhine!
Who shields thee, dear, beloved
Rhine!
Chorus:
Dear Fatherland, thou need’st not
fear,
Thy Rhineland which stands firmly
herel
Dear land , deur Fatherland, thou
need’st not fear,
Thy faithful Rhineland wutch
stands firmly here!
A hundred thousand hearts beat high,
The flash darts forth from every
eye;
For Teutons brave, inured by toil,
Protest their country’s holy soil.
Chorus:
HUNGARY.
National Hymn.
Lord of heaven, bless our land,
Joy and plenty here bestow;
In our need, lift thine hand,
Strong to shield us from the foe.
Hungary in days of old,
Proud and fearless, Rtaunch and
f rcc,
Call’d her sons from field and fold
To die for liberty;
Call’d her sons from field and fold
To die for liberty.
Hail, all hail, holy land!
Crowifld with lonely mothers’ tears;
Onward lead, hero band,
Onward ever through the years;
Peace shall follow after pain,
Love shall garner in her store,
Freedom rises once uguin,
Shall live for evermore;
Freedom rises once again,
Shull live for evermore.
SERVIA.
Rise, O Servians!
Rise, O Servians, swift arise.
Lift your banners to the skies,
For your country needs her children,
I Fight to make her free.
■ Rise, 0 rise, and crush our enemy,
Rise and fight for liberty.
Free the Sav and Dunn flow.
Let us, too, unfetter’d go.
O’er the wild Moravian Mountains,
Swift shall flow sweet freedom’s foun
tains,
Down shall sink the foe.
Rise, O rise, and crush our enemy,
Rise and fight for liberty.
AUSTRIA.
God Preserve Our Noble Emperor.
God preserve our noble Emperor,
Franz our Emp’ror good and
great;
Mighty ruler, high in wisdom, we his
glory celebrate!
Love shall twine him laurel garlands,
they become his regal state!
God preserve our noble Emp’ror,
Franz our Emp’ror, good and
great!
Gmd preserve our noble Emp’ror,
Franz our Emp’ror, good and
great!
Over blooming lands his scepter doth
extend both wide and far;
Of his throne the noblest pillars
righteousness and mercy are.
Over all his shield extended beams
effulgent, as a star.
God preserve our noble Emp’ror,
Franz our Emp’ror, good and
great!
To array himself in virtue, ever was
his constant care;
iOply to defend his people doth his
sword flame high in air,
In their blessings thus rewarded he
finds all his pleasure there.
God preserve our noble Emp’ror,
Franz our Emp’ror, good and
great!
Ronds of slav’ry he has broken, he
has made his people free;
May his days be ever happy, he, the
flower of chivalry;
And the smile of children's children
cheer him when his hour is
night.
God preserve our noble Emp’ror,
Franz our Emp’ror, good and
great!
ENGLAND.
God Save the King.
God save our gracioos King, long live
our noble King;
God save the King.
Send him victorious, happy and glori
ous, long to reign over us,
God save the King!
O Lord, our God, arise, scatter his
enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics, frustrate their
knavish tricks, on thee our hope
we fix,
God save the King!
Thy choicest gifts in Btore, on him lie
please to pour,
Long mny he reign.
May he defend our laws, and ever
give us cause, to sing with
heart and voice,
God save the King!
BELGIUM.
Who’d Have Relieved Such Self-Willed
Daring?
(La Rrabanconne.)
Who’d have believed such self-willed
daring
That his base ends he might attain,
Avid for blood, u prince unsparing,
Bullets on us should rain!
Let it end; Belgians, be freemen,
From Nassau brook no more in
dignity;
Since grape has torn down the Orange
flying
Upon the tree of Liberty.
Since grape has torn down the Orange
flying
Upon the tree of Liberty,
Upon the tree of Liberty,
Upon the tree of Liberty.
In gen’rous wrath all too forebearant,
Belgium strove for a righteous
cause.
■ She from her king, as from a parent,
Only ask’d juster laws.
But 'twas he, whose furious folly
With guns his son loosed on us ruth
lessly.
With Belgian blood stain'd the flag
of Orange,
Upon the tree of Liberty,
With Belgian blood stain’d the flag
of Orange,
Upon the tree of Liberty,
Upon the tree of Liberty,
Upon the tree of Liberty.
Brabanters proud, with hearts cour
ageous.
Who in battle are e’er so brave,
You from Batavia’s yoke outrageous
Hall and powder shall save,
At the feet of the archangel
O’er Brussels then shall your flag
float free
And proudly flourish without the
Orange,
Upon the tree of Liberty.
And you for whom proud tears are;
flowing,
’Neath the fierce cannon’s fire who;
fell,
Dead, for a nation all unknowing
Names it should know so well;
‘Neath the sod, where he had laid
you.
There sleep, ye martyrs, who fought
dauntiessly.
In peace there rest far from the
Orange,
Beneath the tree of Liberty.
RUSSIA.
God Save the Czar!
Lord, God, protect the Czar; Pow’r-
ful and mighty,
Mny he in glory, in glory, reign, reign,
He is our guiding star. Great in
peace, and war.
Our fnith's true protector. l.ong live
the Czar!
