Bob Waddam‘9 Horse Trade.
‘1 ou know Bob Waddam, I reckon ?’ said
Uncle Mike.
‘Not that I recollect/ I replied.
‘Well, Bob was an amazin hand at tradin’
horses, and generally came out ahead too. I
never knew him really girdled and the under
brush cut but once/
‘How was that, Uncle Mike V
‘Why, you see Bob had been gettin’ a gray
hoss in some of his deals, that was jest about
as nice a hoss to look at as ever put his noso
through the rack sticks. He was a human
lookin’ hoss and nothin’ shorter. He was al
ways lookin’ arter stars, and carried his tail
like the National flag on the 4th of July. But
he would’nt work—he was above it. He’d
almost stop when he saw his shadow follow
in’ him for fear he might be drawin’ it.’
‘Nor, then,” says Bob, “some individuals is
bound to be picked up.’
‘So makin’ an excuse that gray’s shoes
wanted Axin’, he sent him to the blacksmith’s
and harnessed up his t’other bosses, hitched
on a wagon load of stone, and drove down
to Sam Hewett’s tavern. Here he stopped
before the door, took out the near hoss, and
harnnessed up the gray in his place. Bob
went in and took a drink and waited around
until some feller should come along who want
ed to speculate. He had’nt waited long when
he see some feller cornin’ up the road like all
possessed, his horses under a full run, while
he was sawin’ the bits and hollerin’ wo! wo!
with all his might and main. He managed
to stop ’em after he got a little by sam Hew
ett’s and turnin’ ’em around, he come up a
slappin’ his hands and in a tarin’ passion at
his hoss.’
‘He’s never ready to stop/ says he, ‘that
hoss ain’t—an’ though he’s the best hoss I ev
er owned, yet I’m determined to get shut of
him/
‘Well, just then out comes Bob, and mount
ed his wagon jest as if he was goin’ to drive
off, when says he, ‘Hallo ! stranger, perhaps
you’d like to deal with me for a steady one/
‘Why, yes/says the stranger, I would liko
something a little more quiet than that go
ahead snap-dragon rascal of mine.’ •
So Bob looked at the sorrel and found him
a fine square built animal, his eye full of fire,
and every muscle in play.
‘Well/ says Bob; £ a few words for me.—
There’s my gray—here’sy our sorrel. What’s
your proposition ?’
‘Now you’re talking/ said the stranger, ex
amining the gray as he stood hitched to the
load of stone. ‘l’ll give you sorrel and the
best forty dollar elock in my wagon for the
gray:
•.Done/ said Bob ‘just unhitch/
Neither of them had asked t’other ques
tions, ’cause neither of ’en\wanted to answer
any. The horses were exchanged. Bob had
got his clock, and the stranger got into his
wagon, took up his lines, and biddiu’ ’em good
day, was about to shirt when gray put a stop
to it, and would’nt budge a hair. In vain did
the stranger whip and coax, —not an inch
could he get. There sat Bob laughing in his
sleeve almost ready to burst', to see how the
stranger was trying to start and could’nt.
Not a word did the stranger say, however,
but after he had got quite tired, and had giv
en up trying it any more, he came and sat
down on the horse block.
Bob thought he might as well be going; so
picked up his robbing—‘go along/ says he.
‘Fhe sorrel turned his head and looked back
at him, as much as to say ‘don’t you wish I
would ?’ but didn’t stir a peg. In vain Bob
coaxed and patted. Sorrel was ihar and
was’nt any where else.
“Well, I reckon it’s my turn to laugh now,’
said the stranger. ‘I ’spose you’ll call again
when you come to town/
‘Oh never mind/ says Bob, ‘sorrel will go,
or else you could’nt get here with him/
‘Oh, yes/ says the stranger, ‘you can start
him if you’ll only bring some shavings, and
kindle afire under him, as I did! And then
he laughed again, and when I came away they
were playing a game to see who should take
’em both. —Cincinnati News.
A Parting Scene between two Irish
men.—lrishmen, generally speaking are not
noted for any great forethought concerning
their temporal wellfare, but in any thing re
lating to the spiritual they exhibit an usual
share of shrewdness, as illustrated in the fol
lowing case, which occurred on the frontier
of the state of Maine, between Jemmy McGee,
and Pat McGlarkin. Pat being calle l
to visit his dying neighbor Jemmey McGee,
and hear his last words of farewell before
shuffling off this mortal coil/ he ponned his
best suit of clothes, and smoothing his cheer
ful phiz into usual gravity, made his appear
ance at the bedside of his old friend. Upon
meeting Pat exclaimed—
‘Well, Jaimy, I understand the doctors have
given you up.’
Jim—‘Yes, it’s most over wid me/
Pat, after a pause —‘Well Jaimy yc havn’t
been a great sinner—ye’ll go • to the good
place/
Jim—‘Oh, yes Pat—to be sure I stole a
bit of the government timber.’
Pat, taking Jemmy’s hand, and assuming
a diplomatic air—‘farewell to ye—when ye
reach the good place tell them you’re well
acquainted with McGlarklin/
Here Pat started for the door, but, as if
suddenly thinking of‘Jemmy’s dishonesty in
stealing the government timber, he wheeled
around to his friend and seriously and earn
estly exclaimed—
‘But Jaimmy, if anything happens to ye
that pe should go to the other place, jist tell
them ye don't know a devil of a iconl about me!

A Petticoat Duel is reported in a boarding
house in Hudson street, New York, by the Mir
ror, between two young ladies, about a young
“blood” named Williams. They quarreled on
Saturday as to who should monopolize his com
pany on the occasion of an expected visit, and
one, fleeting to a gentleman’s room, procured a
pair of pistols, when, in the height of their fren
zy, they took positions at the opposite ends of
the garret room and fired, having first seared
off a gentleman who attempted to interfere. At
the discharge of the weapons, both ladies fell!—
but they had only undergone a shock of the
nerves. When restored, they hysterically flew
into each other’s arms, of course.
