A queer excuse was made a few days ago by an old lady. The good woman was sub poenaed to appear as a witness in rather deli cate case. She did not come, and a bench warrant was issued for her appearance, on which she was brought into Court. The pre siding judge thought it his duty to reprimand ; her. “Madam, why were you not here before .” “I couldn't come, sir.” “Were you not suppeenaed, madam?” “Yes, sir ; but was sick.” “What was the matter madam ?” “I had an awful bile, sir.” After a pause—“ U pon your honor, madam?” “No, sir; upon my arm.” . A city miss, on a visit to the country, was filled with surprise at the sight of a girl milk ing a cow. “I didn’t know you did in that way,” she said, with round-eyed wonder. “I thought they took hold of tlie tail. What’s j she got so long a tail for?” ; At a training down east, after an order I was given to “return ramrods,” one of the sol j diersbroke from the line, and was oft’ at full | split. “Hallow,” bawled the commanding j officer, “where are you going !” “Down to j Squire Muggin, to return the ramrod I bor : rowed of him. You said return ramrods.” A Jerseyman was very sick, and was not expected to recover. His friends got around his lied, and one of them says— ‘John do you feel willing to die?” John ‘made an effort’ to give his views on I the subject, and answered, with his feeble j voice— ‘l—think—l’d rather stay —where—l’m— j better acquainted.’ Sir John Franklin. —Mr. Green, the aeronaut, lias forwarded nine balloons, with some apparatus for generating gas, to the ex pedition about to sail in search of Sir John Franklin. An experiment was made, a few days ago, at the house of Mr. Green, with a balloon containing thirty-two packets, con sisting of three thousand slips of silk and pa per, which were to be detached at the rate of one every five miuutes. The balloon was be tween five and six feet in diameter, and was filled with hydrogen gas. After the balloon had proceeded a short distance the packets began to be liberated at short intervals. It took a south-western direction, and some of j the packets were picked up at Chichester, j The balloon then proceeded towards the ! Channel, and on Tuesday morning Mr. Green had the great satisfaction of receiving the i following communication from Mr. Cteur deux, the Mayor of St. Denis, bearing his of j ficial seal: —“The inclosed was picked up a j little to the west of St. Denis, on the 2d in stant, but I am unable to state at what hour : it reached the earth, no one having seen it j fall.” Spelling “Whirlpool.” —In early times, says the N. York “Spirit,” there was an old Irish schoolmaster, at 31 arietta, Ohio, whose speech was strongly characterized by his native brogue. A rogue of a boy was studdying his spelling les son, with which the afternoon’s exercises were to conclude,.and come to the word “ Whirlpool He knew, from the master’s manner of pronun ciation, that he would give it out “Whirdlepoo dle,” and he passed the idea around to the whole of the class, that each one should spell it as if it had four syllables. Accordingly, when the mas ter gave out the word, the first boy commenced very glibly— “ W-h-i -r whir, d-l-e die, whirdle, p double o poo, d-l-e die, whirdlepoole.” next!” says the master. “Whirdlepoo- The next commenced—“ W-h-e-r wher, d-l-e die, wherdle, p double o poo, wherdlepoo”— “The! Mind Your Dots. —A Kentucky member of Congress wrote to his wife on his arrival at Washington City, that ho had “formed a connection with a very agreeable Mess, and expected to spend the winter very pleasantly.” Unfortunately, to the surprise and mortifica tion of the good lady to whom he was writ ing inadvertently dotted the e in the word Mess.
