THK DAILY TIMES.
____ THE CITY. ~
Theatre.
The undivided attention bestowed upon the
performance of Hamlet on Monday evening, and
the hearty applause which was showered upon
Mr. Booth during the entire performance and at
its close, constitute a criticism upon his merits
as an actor, which must bo pleasing to him, and
with which we do not feel disposed to inter
fere.
Perhaps a severe cold and the fatigue of travel
may have detracted somewhat from the spirit
which he usually infuses into the stronger pas
sages of the play, hut we had no fault to find with
his conception or rendering of Hamlet, regarding
it as we do, as the most easy, natural and elegant
impersonation of the most difficult character
drawn by the master hand of the greatest of play
writers, which we have ever witnessed.
To-night Mr. Booth appears as Richelieu. Wo
scarcely deem it necessary to call upon those who
enjoy fine acting to go, for we are sure that those
who can go, will not deprive themselves by stay
ing away.
The Balloon Ascension.
The asension of Mons. Morat, yesterday after
noon, in place of the lady who was advertised to
ascend, was a complete success. The ropes were
cut about a quarter past 5 o’clock, and the bal
loon moved off majestically to the hight, we pre
sume, ot half a mile. A slight breeze from the
west bore it iu an easterly direction, and having
been up about twenty minutes it descended not
far from the eastern limits of the corporation. A
large number of citizens, of whom a large pro
portion were ladies, witnessed the ascension, and
were highly gratified therewith.
Sanford's Opera Troupe.
It will be remembered that this talented troupe
give their third and last grand concert at Con
cert Hall this evening. Those who have not
yet paid them a visit, should do so to-night by
all means. Their performances abound with el
gaut music, fine dancing, rich repartee. If you
want a hearty laugh, don’t fall to attend.
DAILI COMMERCIAL RECORD
