Under the head of “Important,” we find the
following paragraph in a northern exchange:
The Now York Capitalists have decided]to sub

permanent adjustment of our troubles. This is
authentic. Less than three hundred thousand
dollars was coLeoted at the port of Now York
last week, being an immense falling off.
As the Astor House, (although one of the pro

Tho Now York World says :

The Columbus Guards.
Eds. Sun : An article which you copied in your
issue of this morning from the Mobile Register
in relation to tho Columbus Guards is calculated,
without being intended, to produco a wrong im
pression.
This article had been pointed out to me in tho
Register, but I deemed its correction, so far as I
was concerned, not of sufficient importance to
induce mo to address tho Editors on the subject.
Rut as you have copied it without comment, you
will allow me to correct the misapprehension into
which Capt. Forsyth, one of tho editors of the
Register, seems to have fallen.
The company has in its employment a French
Drill Sorgeant, employed to instruct squads in
the use of the musket, viz., tho manuei of arms
and the bayonet exercise, who has thus far dis
charged his duties with fidelity and to the satis
faction of the company. Hut so far from instruct
ing tho company in any company movement
whatever, in tho Infantry, Light Infantry or
Skirmish drill, ho has not even been allowed to
attempt one ; and I will add, with all proper
respect to him, that he never will be, so long as
/ command the company, that duty is reserved to
myself; in my absence, to the subaltern officers,
all of whom would do honor to higher positions ;
in their absence, to the intelligent sergeants ;
and the credit for whatever of reputation the
company may have achieved in the last six years,
is duo to them and myself, backed up by a noble,
gallant, and intelligent soldiery, and no body
clse.
Very respectfully,
PAUL J. SEMMES,
Capt. of the Columbus Guards.

above.

Superphosphate of Lime!!!
NEWBunftv, N. C. Oct. 18G0.
Prof. J. J. Mapes, Dear Sir:—l bought twenty
bags of your Nbrogenized Superphosphate of Lime,
of your agents, Messrs. H. &N. E Solomon, Ham
burg, S. C.,(who solicited a statement of its effects)
and applied it to forty acres of my poorest cotton
land. This land is alt on the public road where its
effects were seen. My neigh’ ors, who are acquain
ted with the laid, were astonished at ihc luxuriant
growth of the cotton where I used your Supliei phos
phate. It produced better cotton and a larger amount
than on my good land; less work was needed in
making the cotton than on my other land. Not a
particle of rust was to he seen where I applied your
superphosphate, while the rust prevailed over every
other portion of the crop.
Respectfully yours,
DAVID PAINE.
Note— Mr Paine’s good land compares fuvorabiy
with the best cotton lands on the Saluda River. The
Saluda bottoms are proverbial "for producing large
quantities of cotton
