By Aid. Hazleton —
We, the undersigned, Street Committee, beg
leave to make the following report:
We have examined all the streets in the city
and find them in fine condition, wi'h only a
few exceptions. Sorao of the bridges we find in
had condition; the one near the P. 0., also the
group of bridges near the Methodist parsonage.
The want of lumber being the cause, (the lum
ber contractor having failed to furnish the city
according to contract.) Too much praise can
not he bostowed upon'our worthy and efficient
Deputy Marshal for the manner in which he
has kept the streets.
We ordered the Deputy Marshal to straighten
the ditch beginning at, a culvert on the O. A
W. P. Railroad and running near the Asylum,
and to clean out said ditch below. Also instruc
ted him to repair the bridges so soon as lumber
can be procured.

on similar subjects. Which was agreed to.
By Aid. Johnson—Resolved, That the Treas

from the contractor with the City, until all ex
tra pay for lumber is settled, as lie has failed
to furnish the City with lumber as per con

There are seven reasons why this School corn
mends itself to public notice in preference to many
of our popular schools.
Ist. The healtlilulness of the location.
2d. Its freeness tiom all the vices which tend to
allure the mind from deep and earnest application to
study.
3d. Tb thoroughness and diligence to which tin
student 1 subjected— eing taught that he has no
timetc waste.
4th. Vocal music is a aily exercise, free of charge
in which the whole school join in the sweet accents
—which arouses the tired intellect, and restores elas
ticity to the drooping mind
sth. The efforts made to detelope the mind by the
use of practical Instruction at the expense of the
impractical.
6th, The deep interest manifested by the Teachers
Trustees, and Citizens, gives it that social and lively
aspect, -so harmonious to the youthful mind—ren
dering the school-house a pleasant resort to the stu
dent instead of a house of dread and hatred.
7th. The systematic manner in which theschoolis
conducted. .“Heaven’s first law” is adopted and
practiced. A 8. EDGERI/' Principal.
