CAPTURE OF THIRST. NICHOLAS.
The Richmond Va. correspondent of the
Charleston Mercury, has the following:
Just as I am about to mail this, I
important capture 1 r °°
schooners near Point Lookout, at
of tho Potomac, by a party of
in tho service of tho Confederate
information was brought by the captors, wIC
arrived this morning from FrcdcricksburoL.
with thirty-nine prisoners captured.
facts in general, so far as have been ascor.
tamed, and upon which you may rely, are as
follows: A Colonel, or Captain, Thomas of
Maryland, one of the bravo volunteer young
Zouaves of that State, left Richmond some
six or seven days ago, and by disguising him
self, reached Baltimore by tho way of Phila
delphia. The route he took is not known.—
lie travelled between these two cities as a t
Lady. At Baltimore ho took passage with a '
number cf his brave Southern friends, on z
board tho St. Nicholas steamer, one of a
gnlar line between Baltimore and
ton. The number is variously stated at
twenty to forty. Os CfturfA'tHcy'siiowed D- ’
signs of being party, or even '
When near Point Lookout,
<?herc the Potomac empties into the Chesa
peake Bay. Thomas went down to his cabin
and opened his baggage, which consisted
chiefly of efficient arms, and then distributed
tl en to bis friends. He and his paity imme
diately demanded the surrender of the stea
mer. It was surrendered without a struggle,
and “nobody was hurt.” Thomas had pro
vided himself with an efficient engineer as
one of the party, in case there had been any
difficulty with the engineer of the steamer.
All went on smoothly, how'ever, and .Capttifr "
Thomas began, for the first time, his naval
career. He had not to cruise long before three
rich prizes, one after the other, came in his
way. One was a vessel laden with near four
thousand bags of coffee, another had a cargo
of ice, and the third a cargo of sugar. The
whole of the captures must be worth two
hundred thousand dollars. They took them
into Fredericksbug. But our hero, Thomas,
has higher game in view; he meant to have
captured the Paionee, and for that purpose
proceeded to the camp of the Tennessee re
giment, on the banks of tho Potomac, to ask
for that regiment, or a portion of it, to accom
pany him. Only a part of the regiment was
present, and its commander declined to accept - .
the invitation. Thomas not being able to ac
c mplish his purpose, brought his prisoners
on to Richmond. He felt sanguine of being
able to capture the Pawnee, and regrets very
much not having had tho necessary force.—
The commander of the Tennessee force, pro
bably, deemed it a hazardous or a sort of ro
mantic enterprise. Thomas having accom
plished so much, ought to have had an op
portunity to try his skill and bravery upon
the Pawnee. I am against the practice,
which is too common, of writing extravagant
encomiums, but I cannot lose this opportuni
ty of giving “honor to whom honor is due,”
and to mention, in terms of admiration, the
brave Maryland boys, many of them wealthy
an I of the best families, who have left their
homes to join us in the war.
r’B--- At last advices from San Francisco*
three millions of treasure had accumulated,
there over and above the usual deposits ow
ing to the failure to ship, from fear of priva
teers. It is not impossible that some of this
treasure may have been finding its way to
the East, through the Butterfield overland
route, to Western Miss turi, nnd the seizure
of the coaches and stock of that line, by Gov.
Jackson, will not only stop further shipments,
bit may put some of the dust in hi< posse •
sion. A million or two obtained in that way
would be quite a desirable increase in the
Missouri treasury.
