Wimtfve%may he said of the future prosperity of I apt inclined to believe that tnorodepeqrts on the sous of the soil than all other agencies combined, whether those agencies are put- forth by the “powers that be” or the “powers that Aire.” More than ever 1 see the.wisdom of that line of Pope, (I meaoathe EnglhH Pope) “for formsof government let fools contest,” confess, said line igw nofrsuggesffed by “what's best administer ed.” In our situation Je it-not absolute folly to eorUert anything that he thrusHfcpon ffee fohn of But there is a reconstruction in which we may aH engage and engage to advan tage ; aud that is the rebuilding of the temple of fortune. It affords me much pleasure to say, that in the.vicinity of Eufaula, Ala., this work is rapidly going on. It does not consist in employ mentof mercantile skill; in erecting magnificent storehouses without “count ing the cost”; in making useless and hurt ful speeches; in quarreling over what we cannot help; in descanting on those “sad est of all words —we might have been but it consists in honestly cultivating the soil; in looking to the sun and rains of heaven, instead of the smiles, and sympa thetic tears of men ; In giving employ ment, instruction, and kind treatment to the newly emancipated people whom God has surrounded us with, and committed to our care. These thoughts are suggested by the ad mirable management and gratifying re sults to be seen on, the plantation of Rev. W. N. Reeves; a large, most humane aud successful planter of Barbour county, Ala. Mr. Reeves has about one hundred and fifty freedmen on his place, about seventy of whom are laborers. He has for them, either now, or in contemplation, a good school, and a good church and Sabbath school, and being an able and devoted Minister, often preaches to them himself. He has one thousand acres in cultiva tion, six hundred in cotton and four hun dred in corn, and the crops are fine and promise an abundant yield. I cannot better tell you what the feel ings of this gentleman are, than to insert an extract from a private letter, of course without an explanation or permission on his part, that any of the words should ev er be seen in print: “If the colored people do not rise in the scale of humanity, I do not want the sin to lie at my door. I henestly believe that no more inviting, or important, or prom ising field of labor was ever opened to the dirtstWi philanthropist, than the freed men now present to Southern Christians, I say Southern Christians, for they are the ones whom God, and nature, aud providence call to this work, and they are urged by the most pressing considerations to enter upon it in earnest and at once. — Now is the time. ‘We must take the cur rent when it serves, or loose our ventu res.’ ” Gen. Cullen A. Battle, a gallant Southern soldier, has a large plantation near the one and was present a few days ago at a barbecue given by Mr. Reeves to his freedmen, and made them a most eloquent and acceptable speech. Nowhere, I am confident, are the freedmen doing better, and the crops lookiug finer, thau in this section of Alabama. May the examples mentioned here incite others to a like course of conduct, and may a kind Provi dence so smile upon our agricultural in terests, that light shall come focth out of the present chaos—the light of pleuty and happiness in spite of the political darkuess that now broods over the laud. Not many items of news are to be gath ered in our city. The pastors of the Bap- ttst and Methodist churches ha vs been granted a summer vacation, and are now in the upper country. Many other citi zens have left for the springs, and oooler retreats. Active business left for parts un known some times since, aud like other places in our suuuy laud, Eufaula pre sents a dearth religiously, socially and com mercially. Yours* Ac., MERCURY. Homicide.— For several nights in cession the store of Rufus Reynolds, on Bay street, was entered, and small sums of money as well as articles of merchandise stolen. On 'Wednesday night Mr. Rey nolds remanined in the store for purpose of discovering the depredator. About daylight the door was quietly unlocked from the outside, aud a person entered. Mr. Reynolds, who oould just discern the outline of a human from, raised a loaded shortgun and fired over the coun ter, intending to strike the Intruder in the legs aud cripple him, but the charge took ettect in the abdomen, indicting a mortal wound. The thief proved to be a colored boy named George, about eighteen years of age. lie lived an hour and » half after receiving the wound, kikl confessed to be the party who had robbed the store on former occasions. Justice W. A. McLean soon appeared upon the sceue and arrested Mr. Rey nolds. He then, iu the absence of a Coro ner, empaneled a jury of inquest, consist ing of half white and half colored citisens, who, after carefully investigating the circumstances, returned a verdict of justi fiable homicide, whereupon Mr. Rey nolds was discharged form custody. Jackaoimlte Union. Fome of the Washington correspondents have been keeping up a very unseemly and Impertinent pMlavar as to whether the petition for pardon of Mrs. Surratt, whfaii was signed by certain members of the Mil itary Commission which tried her, was ever presented to President Johnson. The President, it sceum, has said it was never presented to him, though one of the coun sel in the present Surratt trial says It was. Certain small quibbles have been brought againat the President in the matter, and certain potty “proofa” which we are asham ed even to mention in such u oonneotiou. Thereto no intelligent man in the country, uo matter of what |*olitics, who doubts the allegation that live aforesaid petition was never prem-uted to President Johnson— if the President has so staled Aud we trust (he contemptible quibbles about the affair will atop forthwith. r N.
