It is not often that we hare the privilege
ef witnessing the legitimate drama without
going from home; mid when the oppoi(unity
l* presented it is but .fight and rrn-ouable
that our people should inquire into t '.e char*
acter of tho players, as well as their capacity
to entertain. In large cities such re| \ sen*
tntieus gs Black Crofk, the While ,F.\ .1 and
Humpty Duraply may work no evil socie
ty* »tid low, lewd and licentious per one may
exhibit themselves before an admiring audi
ence without breeding moral diseases in the
community; but in small places such repre
sentations and such persons cannot and ought
not to be patronised, for the reasons that con
tact is unavoidable, and the social circle too
small to admit within its pale ought that eon-
taminates and osoape without offense.
It affotJs us pleasure to assure ourciti-
asp* Out Mr. (filbert's Troupe la composed of
Individuals who arc above reproach and
whose performances are of a character that
can give offense to nono. He Is hbuself a
Southern born gentleman, and haa fivo mem
bers of his own family in bis .Tripps; and an
acquaintance with them, since they first came
to Ueorgla from their home in Tennessee, haa
afforded ua ample opportunity of acquiring
jftCtffwIop that Justifies u| |q commending
them to our people as worthy of their reepect
and patronage. The other members of the
Troupe we have also known for a long time,
and have uo hesitation iu bearing testimony
to their gentility undju.it claims to the res
pect and kind treatment of those of our good
people who are diipoicd to patronise the
drama.
In keeping with the high character of the
ptUontl of the Troupe, Mr. Gilbert ttidlouv-
ly avoids und prohibits those abuses which
harts rendered thw* Stage obnoxious a,-. I
brought the drama to its present low estate.
Ilia piece* are selected with taste, and are
put upon the boards with scrupulously chaste
*ltd refined personations. The Troupe
eome to entertain us, uot as strolling vaga
bonds, or sensational debititched, with burnt
cork, padded calves and fig-leaf soatumes, but
as plain, honest, respectable people, with the
legitimate drama,—••the brief and abstract
chronicles of the times,”—to amuse and en
tertain without offeuau to society iu itw most
fasjidlous moods. On Friday and Saturday
evenings last they performed at Americas,
and the Republican truthfully says:
"The eatortainnieiite givi-u by this Star
Troupe are of such a nature that the Hage,
the Poet, and Divine, as well as he who is
.considered the ".Monarch of the Field"—the
ihirdy son of toil—lha Partner—can enjoy
ith an equal degree of composure, with a
"conscience void of offence toward God nttd
