* Of the Louisville CoUrior-Jour
Virginia that the negroes of that State,
with erarooly s single exception, reg
ia terodtheir names sod' would fats for
that unexpurgaled constitution, and
wo have no doubt that they did so.—
This oonstituliou provides that nearly
tho whole disfranchised white people
alialI remain dialranchiaed and.be.gov.
erned by the blacks, and that they
shall be incompetent to hold ofiioe.—
Thousands ol these negroos will soon
be applying to tho men whom they
voted to degrade, and seeking from
them situations as laborers and all
ptfior kinds of favors; but it we were
iu those white men’s places, are would,
with all our pity tor lire wretched ne..’
grnes, sooner throw our money iu the
liver than bestow oue dollor of it up
on them except ill ease of absolute ne
cessity. NVn should scorn to tolerate
a negro upon our premises who had
voted for the privilege of putting his
foot upon our necks. The negroes
have all been warned, a thousand limes
over, of tho inevitable consequence to
themselves ol tho courso llioy were
pursuing, and they will deserve no
sympathy when the dark days ol their
trouble shall he upon them.”
Snob, says tho Savannah Republi
can, with inevitable truth, is tho gen
eral sentiment ol tho South. The poo.
plo regard their former slayes as a be
trayed and rained race; they sympa
thize with them, and are ready to dtj.
all in llioir power for them and,
unfortunate children. But noiuan or
pooplo over yet wero required to hug
vipers to their bosoms—to patronizo
and bclriond a class wiio are seeking
their degredalion and ruin. If tho
negro lives ill tho South, ho must ox-
pcct to be a Southern man, identified
with Southern prosperity, and inter
ested in ail that concerns the happi
ness and welfare of tho Southern peo
ple. lie can no more war agaiiiHt tlioso
interests and livu ill peace and friend.,
ship, than could an army of invadors
iu a strango land which they seek to
possess mid rule with a despot’s hand
—no raoro than could tho operatives
of lthodo Island or Massachusetts woro
they to enter a Southern conspiracy
against the manufactories of tlioso
Stales. There is no man wiio would
if.lie could, ejoet irom his own house
hold an enemy to its peace, or if lids
wero impracticable, have tlio loast
possible to do with him.
It is precisely ill this light that the
Southern people regard their emanci
pated slaves. They wish to give
litem labor, fair wages, protection, and
friendship, but then not on uondilion
of enmity and opposition on their
part. They havo no war to make up
on the negro; to the contrary, they
have conceded to him privileges, civil
and political, far beyond his deserts,
anil they will permit no war upon
themselves. We must harmonize on
great questions ol public policy in
which both are alike interested, or else
we must part. The Southern people
proler theTiegro ss a laborer, and will
ho d on to libn jurt as long as be will
allow them, libj. not a day longer.—
They can get laborers who ore faithful,
iudustnous, and without political or
other prejudice against their employ
era, and this they intend to do if those
qualities arc not to he found in their
former slaves. Tlio whole matter
rests with the latter. Let them go to
work, do it faithfully, and know and
keep their plaoos, and they will have
no need to (car the compelion of the
Chinese. As their friend, we beseech
them to do nothing to bring about
what wilj surely beacalainity to them
and their ciiildren. We have never
tailed to wish them well, and to do
honeBtly and fairly by them ; let them
then, not disregard our advice. Aa
little os they dream ot evil,—tell
them they havo reached a fearful oris-
is in their.fale as a people—one which
we Bhould shndder to contemplate but
for tbe conviction that they have their
destiny, m their own hands and can
ward off tbs calamity. It is not too
late to begin the work, and wo exhort
them to set about it at once, and in
of Virginia, it turns
otti, did'not wiioliy verily tho propiio-
ey of tho Democratic papers of ;that
