Presidential Straws—Tennessee 0. K.
The following dispateh indicates weari
ness on the part of Mr. Grant, and a disin
clination to bother further with the reckless
knaves who would lie the Nation's life away
and ste muniments:
Washington, Sept. 2d —A special to the
Times makes Grant say to the Senter dele
gation from Tennessee that lie recognized
Mr. Neuter as a Republican and considered
that the Republicans who voted for him still
belong to the Republican party, and in addi
tion to that-he would not remove from office
any Federal official in the State for having
thrown the weight of his position and per
sonal influence against Mr. Stokes. . The
President, in conclusion, recommended them
to harmonize and put nn end to their difficul
ties, personal and political, by a general
amnesty.

With the roads already built and iu course

alone to jlo tlie honors at tlie eollation .spread
for the Press Association; but certain it is.
few of them remained t> assist him. Wheth
er the slight was intended for him or the
Press, the offense was of equal gravity, and
did not inspire any emotional gratitude to
wards the offenders. However, wo fared
very well,—the livery stables wore emptied
of their fiue equipages for our. service, and at
the city’s expense wc indulged in a 'feast of
reason and flow of soul’ till the noon of
night.' Whether the Hotels were free to all,
we do not know, but our friend Brysou, at
the United States, thought the honor of en
tertaining the Editor of the Albany Avm-.t am
ple compensation for his bed and board.
M. E. Kenny, of the unfortunate Demijohn
notoriety, threw open his Ale Depot, and we
don’t know that any one of the fraternity
passed iliat way without giving him a call
AtUnUhas grown vastly since we left
there iq December last, and the tingling
sound of the trowel and the merry whistle of
fctla hod*carriers may now be heard in every
nook and corner of the city. Wc were told
that clcten hundred and sixty houses were iu
process of construction, and our birds-cye
view, .from. Archer & Son’s finest turn out,
as Wenfhirle4 through the streets, and over
the hi)l$ sod far away, convinced us that the
statement had much truth in it. Otherwise
we found the city much the same as when
we left it las* winter, and the people altogeth
er the same genial, pleasant, rolicking, bust
ling, busy, energetic, progressive enterpris
ing phenomena they were then. They are a
wonderful people, aud wisely sanguine that
tho Gate City is only iu ils infancy.
We were glad to find the masses—the true
men of Atlanta—as firm as the granite hills
in their devotion to the legitimate proprieta
ry interests of the State, and uncompromis
ingly opposed to her bastard government
They are not in sympathy with Bullock and
bis ininions, andarc as bitterly antagonistic to
tangling alliances with the vermin as any
other people in the Commonwealth. Tiik
Constitution is their organ, aud its lofty
tone and dignified defiance is sure guarantee
that power and pelf have failed to corrupt
the legions that fought under its banner last
summir. The hannehmen of the Dynasty
however, are by no means few in number.
The politioal Bovine carcass is rich in its
stench, and the buzzards swarm around it in
myriads, and like all other birds of prey,
’wrangle and quarrel for the choice bits.
The people must grin and bear it for three
years moye, and then—what then ? It is
useless to “peep through the blanket of the
dark” for a prediction. The hand writing is
upon the wall;

Tbe liuibert Press Excursion is a curious
>iic-dc in.the affairs of men and things in
Georgia^ It has many shapes and each shape
has ttsowri peculiar complexion.
Tho boys evidently had a good time of it,
and enjoyed tlie trip hugely; but with tbe
plea9nre, or frolic features of the expedition
it is not our purpose to deal. We arc simply
glad onr confreres were treated “according
to their deserts ”
The toadyism—ad nau*eam—that drifted
rearwards like the muddling emissions of
the cuttle fish, is so grossly obnoxious to
common decency that we can have nothing
to do with that. J)e gustibus non c*t dirpulan-
duin, and the rivals for “princes’ favors”
who, with fulsome laudations, sickened the
-very Engine that pulled the train, have onr
consent to indulge their boot-licking propen
sities. Bnt, enpassant, wc)must congratulate
His Excellency and the Superintendent on
the success of their play ; and we do not ok
ject to their laugh behind the scenes. The
cheapness of the commodity must have as
tonished them, but we hope they will refrain
from the painful reflection of self-reproach
for having delayed the venture so long

The new scheme for organizing the negroes

person^intdrestod in the matter received
etter from the president of a colored men’s
trade union in Macon, Ga., saying that they
were fully organized and willing to aid their
brethren here. The writca says the colored
mechanics arc well organized for protection
throughout the State, l«;l they find it impos
sible to secure justice from the while popula
tion, and that a convention of colored me
chanics is called to meet iu Macon in October
to devise means for emigra’ion to the Noith-

cities for the purpose of securing some com-
rsous to interest themselves in the
petent persons
matter and aid the colored people of Georgia
to migrate Wcstiu colonics.
Wc have been informed that one Philip
Joiner, (colored), some days ago wrote apiece
to J. E. B?yaut*s paper, on this same subject,
in which he set forth the startling announce
ment that, unless Dougherty county consents
to give the colored man his “rights,” she will
find/liersclf without labor after the first day
of January next. Now Philip knowswhcrc-
of he speaks, of course, ati-1 on New-Year's
morning, wc shall expect to see long dark
columns, under the lead of this modem Moses,
filing away iu the distance m route for Omaha.
But can’t Mr. Joiner be pursuaded to try
us a little longer? Do, Philip; just a month
or so; may be we’ll give you u few “rights”
if you’ll only define those you hav'nt got.—
Tell us what the “rights” are that you are in
search of, and we’ll try and organic* a joint,
stock company to purchase them for you.
Tbe Test Math not to be Iteqnin-d iu
Virginia.
On the 2S(li Allomcy Genl. Hoar respond-
ed to the enquiry of Genl. Baulins, Secreta
ry pf War. on the test oath problem as np
plied to the members elect to the Virginia
Legislature. lie holds that the test oath
cannot be require*! of them, but that, when
assembled, they can, without taking it. do
no act except to ratify the K»lU Amendment.
Gen. Canby will^ issue his proclamation
about the 15th, assembling the Legislature,
and will doubtless instruct the body to
•dept the 15th Amendment and adjourn to
•wai^tbe action of Congress. When Con
gress recognizes the government of tbe State,
and admits her to representation, then she
will have been rehabilitated, and authorized
to paddle her own canoe.
