Augusta, Loalsvllle aid Calf B. R.
We design in tbs present article to
present s table of di-.tance«, faking
Cincinnatti and Albany M the object
ive points. Of coarse wedo not pre
tend to strict sec a racy in tbe figures
we give. We rely upon the table of
distances given by Cola. Qaw and
Hulbert to tbe Cincinnati! Common
Coonci!, aud to figures given by Col.
Hulbert in his recent speech on board
the steamer made daring tho lata
press excursion, and in estimating tbe
distance from this piaoe to Albany we
rely entirely upon our own knowledge
ol the uiai.. wagon road from this to
the latter place.
We have travelled over the entire
line to Albany more than twenty
times, aud believe that a railroad can
lie located which will reach the latter
place within the estimate we have
made. At any rate, an aetnsl newsy
will act materially nbsnge war fig
ure*. ' —
We are aware of the iaot that the
disclosures which these reliable fig
ures make will be received by those
who are not very familiar with the ge
ography ol tho country and the length
of our leading lines of railway wttb
some degree of astonishment it not of
actual doubt. It has bean so long
assumed that Augusta waa oat of tbe
direct and nearest line from the great
cities of the West to southern and
southwestern Georgia and Urn Atlantic
coast, that our people Lave reluctantly
come to the conclnakmthat no efforts
which wo can make wilt enable ns to
overcome the disadvantages which na
ture aud our defective railway system
hare thrown across our path.
In our article on this subject yester
day we said: “We think we can
show that Augusta mart become tbe
great distributing point for the enor
mous bacon, grain aud flour trade of
the West.” To that task we now ap
ply ourselves by showing that, upon
the completion of the Knoxvilb &
Rabun Gap Road and ita intersection,
by the extension of tbe Georgia Rail
road from Athens to Clayto^ that Au
gusta becomes nearer, by rail, to aB
portions of southern and southwest
ern Georgia which now draw tbeir
supplies from Atlanta, Macon and
Savannah.
It must be borne in mind that the
roads from Cincinnati! to Knoxville,
and from the latter place to Clayton,
in this State, are in a promising state
