EVANS A W A K UHN
ALBANY, OA., - - - July 1, 1880
Voluminous, I»ut Still no Argu
ment.
Tl.c editor of the Carroll County
Times takes over two columns to ex
plain the reasons why he cannot sup
port Governor Cohpiitt for re-elec
tion. If Governor Colquitt's enemies
or opponents would give us n half
ilozcn valid reasons for abusing him
or fighting his administration, we
might lie convinced, and fall into
line with them. But their arguments
are baseless and void of farts. They
make charges against Colquitt, but
they fail to sustain them. When they
acciisc Colquitt of being influenced
by corruption or mercenary motives
in accepting General Gordon’s resig
nation and appointing cx-Governor
Joe Brown to the United States Sen
ate in Gordon’s place, they commit
an outrage upon honesty, they assail
the characters of two of Georgia's
most worthv and honored sons, they
attempt to destroy the records of two
<>f the best and purest men in the
8late.
Governor Colquitt is engaged in a
manly and patriotic contest to sustain
the honor of his administration and
protect his character from the wicked
assaults of Iii9 enemies, ami the good
people of Georgia should stand by
him until Ihov see him vindicated.
We can endorse Colquitt's admin
istration and support him for another
term of two years without defending
Joe Browu’s course immediately af
ter the war. Joe Brown is abie to
take care of himself, as the future
will prove.—Ilawkinsville Dispatch.
A New York reporter was at Gen.
Hancock's headquarters, on Govern
or’s Island, when the dispatch an
nouncing his nomination was handed
him. Turning to the company who
wore present and who crowded into
the room to extend congratulations,
General Hancock said:
“I thank you all for your good
wishes and congratulations on the
nomination. It impossible forme
at the present moment to say any
thing on the subject. It is a grea!
surprise to me, and one that I was en
tirely unprepared for. I can only
thank my friends for this distinction,
and to the gentlemen of the press 1
ran only add that the dispatch I hold
in my hand wa* a great surprise to
me. I again thank you all for yout
congratulations. 1 *
To a member of the press who had
called to. see the general on matters
connected with recent military exam-
iqatiu.ui, he said:
‘••Had you called an hour since I
might have given you the informa
tion desired. The position I ant
placo) in at present detiars me from
making any statements relative to flic
subject.”
General Hancock reclvod the fol
lowing, among other congratulatory
telegrams:
Harttokd, (Jr, June 25.—On be
half of the old soldiers of the second
army corps who served under your
brave and noble leadership. I semi
you their sincere and hearty con
gratulations. We pledgoyou the vote
of Connecticut by six thousand ma
jority. [Signed]
C'bas. Wixeield Scott, Scc’y.
Decay of the Teeth
Arises from various causes, but prin
cipally it may be attributed to early
neglect or tlio indiscriminate use of
tooth powders and pastes, which give
a momentary whiteness to the teeth
while they corrode the enamel. The
timely use of that dcliratc aromatic
tooth-wash. Fragrant SOZODOXT,
will speedily arrest the progress of
decay, harden the gums, and impart
a delightful fragrance to the breath.
It removes those ravages which peo
ple sustain in their teeth from the
ase of sweet and acid articles.
Cincinnati Gazette.]
The democratic ticket calls for all
the energies of the republican party,
and the call will be responded to.
Chicago Times.
Hancock is a miserable aristocrat.
He was educated at West Point, and
never drove a mule on n canal.
Washington Republican.
Hancock and English. This alii
anee between the union soldier anil
the copperhead painfully reminds us
of the ante-bellum compacts of the
fire-eater and the doughface.
Indjaiia|>olis Journal.
General Hancock prides himself on
bis shape, and it lias been understood
in army circles for many years that
he wears a corset. No man who
wears a corset can be elected presi
dent. Give us rat her a man who
weaiyra truss, a liver pad and false
calves—Tilden, for instance.
Chicago Inter-Ocean.
General Winfield Scott himself ran
for the presidency in 1852, and was
beaten so badly that the party he be
longed to gave up the ghost and was
never heard of again. It now looks
a good deal as though the old gener
al^ namesake, General Winfield Seou
Hancock might be the instrument in
the hands of Providence of serving
the democratic party the same trick
in 1880, which tlic original Winfield
served the whigs in 1852. There is
something about the name that sug
gests dissolution of the party it be
longs to.
