BY JULIA DORR.
We two will Hand in the shadow here,
Tb nee the bride as ebe panes by;
Bing soft and low, ting loud and clear.
Ye chiming bells that swing on blgb!
Look! Lookfahe corneal The air grows
With the fragrant breath of the orange
And the flowers she treads beneath her
feet
Die In a flood of rare perpumes.
Shecomes! she comes! the happy bells
With their joyous clamor fills tne ah-,
While the great organ dies and swells,
Soaring to trembling heights of prayer,
Oh Irate ate her robes of silken sheen,
And the pearls that gleam on her bos
om’s snow;
Bnt rarer the grace of her royal mien.
Her hair’s nne gold, and her cheek’s
young glow.
Dainty and fldr as a folded rose,
Fresh as a violet dewey sweet,
Chaste as a lily, she hardly knows
That there are rough paths for other
feet.
For love hath shielded her; honor kept,
Watch beside her bjr night and day.
And evil out from her sight hath crept,
Trailing with slow length far away.
Now In her perfect womanhood,
In all the wealth of her matchless
Lovely and beautiful, pare and good,
She yields herself to her lover’s arms.
Hark 1 how the jubilant voices ring.
Lolas we stand in the shadow here,
While far above us the gay bells swing,
I catch the gleam of a happy tear.

Hie pageant is aver. Come with me
To the other aide of the town, I pray,
Era the son goes down in the darkening
sea,
A ad night tklls around us chill and
gray.
In the dim church porch an hour ago
We waited the bride’s fair face to see;
Now life hss m sadder sight to show
A darker picture for you and me.
No need to seek for the shadow here:
There are shadows lurking ererywhc
These streets in the brightest day are
drear,
And black as the blackness of dispair.
But this Is the house. Take heed my
Mend;
The stain aye rotten, the way is dim,
And up the twits, as we still ascend,
Creep stealthily phantoms dark an
grim.
Enter this chamber. Day by day.
Alone b this chill and ghostly room
A child—a woman—which is it, pray?—
Des^y waits for the hour W
Ah! as she wrings her hand so pale,
No gleam of wedding ring you see :.
There’s nothing to tell. You know the
tale—
God help her now in her misery.
I dare not judge her. I only know
That love was to her a sin and a snare,
While to the-bride of an hour ago
It brought all blessings its hands could
bear/
I only know that to one it came
Laden with honor, and joy and peace.
Its gilts to the other were woe and shame,
And aborning pain that shall never
I only know that the soul of one
Has been a pearl in a golden case;
That of the other a pebble thrown
Idly down In a wayside place,
Where all day long strange footsteps trod,
And the bold, might sun drank up the
dew!
Yet both were women. O, righteous
God!
Thon only can judge between the two.
Speaker Randall’s Experi
ence as a Soldier.
Wadngton Republican.]
Hr. Randall’s experience as a soldier
was brief, but eventful. There is in Phil
adelphia a famous cavlary company
known as the City Troop, it was or
ganized in 1774, and was, I believe, at one
time the body guard of General Wash
ington. It b beyond question the old-
cat unbroken organization in the coun
try, and ft has always- been composed of
rich sod fashionable men. Unless I am
in error it has on all ceremonials the
“the right of the line,” even though a
regular regiment may be in the proces
sion. To this company Mr. Randall be-'
longed at the breaking out of the war.
The company offend its services to the
Government for ninety days and were
acoeepted. The members furnished tlieir
own bores and equipments and accept
ed no pey. Hr. Randall was promoted
to the rank of sergeant and ^finally be
come Corporal or Captain. The troop serv
ed tinder Gen. Thomas, and it was Hr.
Randall’s letter to the War Department
that flm called attention to the great ca
pacity of old ’-Psp” Thomas as an officer.
When Captain Randall took his troop
back to Philadelphia lie was compliment
ed for hb services by the Governor of
Pennsylvania and % orders from the
War Department.
There b a pretty little story from
Shrewsbury, England. As a afarmer’s
daughter was fetching a loaf of bread
from the pantry the other day she was
startled by first one mouse and then an
other leaping out of it ami making off
frightened. On cutting up the loaf a co
sy little nest was found in the centre
containing fourteen little mice. The
bread had been baked eight days.
