Id nr Tom. my brave. free-heurled lad,

.No rival stood before you ;

The farmer* all adore you ;
And evermore your praise they sing,
Though one thing you delay so,
AO<l I sleep lightly, murmuring,
‘•Tom, it you love me, say so.”
Whate’er of ours you chance to seek,
Almost before you breathe it,
J Ining « it' blushes on my check.
And all my soul goes with it.
tt iiy thank me, then, with voi> e so lotv,
And, (altering, turn away so?
next you enmt, before you go,

That quail and the suvag coward,

Would ifccy could find their way so,

My friends, '(ii true, are well to do,
And yours are poor and friendless;
Ah, no ! foi they arc rich in you, i
Then happiness i* endless.
Jon never |i I them shed a tear,
Save that on you they weigh so,
Tl’.eie's one might bring von better cheer :

Medical Institute of Georgia.
TITHE first Session of this Institution, which
I opened in Augusta on the Ist of October
last, closeu on the 3d Monday in May following.
The Executive Committee are happy in being
able to state that the pledges to the pub’ic con
tained in the Circular of the last year have been
faithlully redeemed by a most profitable course
of instruction. *
Although the Legislatute, at its last Session,
passed an Act to altrr the name of the Medical
Academy of Georgia, &,c. granting to the Board
of Trustees f the Medical Institute of Geor
gia, the power of conferring the degree of Doc
tor of Medicine; the Executive Committee think
it advisable, for the present, that the operations
of the Institute continue on the Academic Ar
rangements of the last Session.
The Committee feel justified by the experience
of the past Session, which afforded a fair test of
the plan of instruction adopted in this institu
tion, in believing that the combined Courses of
Study here adopted, afford to the Pupil advanta
ges in rapid advancement in the acquisition of
Medical knowledge, and in economy of time and
money, not elsewhere to be found.
Such is the plan of Instruction in the Medical
Institute of Georgia, that it is suited ns well
to ihe beginning, as the more advanced Pupi>,
and that no private study in the profession is
necessarily required before entering the Class.
The Committee earnestly recommend to all who
intend to devote their attention to the study of
Medicine, first to possess themselves of a good
knowledge oi the Latin and Greek Languages, in
addition to a good English Education, including
a trener-.i kuou ledge of Natural Philosophy and
Mathematics.
he Academic hours, during which all Pupils
will be exppctcd to be found in the Institution
duly engaged in their Studies, will, from the au
tumnal to the Vernal equinox, be from 9 to 12 a.
m. and from 2to 5 p at.; and flora the Vernal to
the Autumnal, from 8 to 12 a. m. and 2 to 6 p. m.
T he Course of Studies combines in the same
Institution, a regular sv*tem of Private Study,
consisting of Medical Reading, Examinations,
«ud Anatomical Exercises, w ith a Regular Course
oi Lectures on all the branches of Medicine, with
appropriate demonstrations, iyc. Two Lecture*
will lie daily delivered before the Class during
Acadtmic hours, (Sundays excepted ) from the
Ist Monday in Octol*er to the 3rd Monday in
May. During the other four months, such Stu
dent* as wili remain, will be employed in regular
Reading and Examinations: Students can be
accommodated with Rooms for private Reading
in the Institution ; and such order, at all times,
pieserved by the Steward, as to prevent any in
terruption to Studies.
Good Board will be furnished bv the Steward
who resides at the Institution, at the very moder
ate p■ ice of $9 per month without, and §lO 25,
with Lodging
8.-ard will be expected to be paid for month
ly, or quarterly, in advance, as may be agreed on
between Student and Steward.
A Competent Library is supplied, without any
necessary expense to the Pupil for the purchase
of Books, except Pocket Voiunuw
T he T ickets of Admission to the benefits of the
Institute, will be SKH) payable in all cases, as
usual, in advance

PROPOSALS, j
FOR PUBLISHING BY SUBSCRIPTION,
A COMPENDIUM
OF THE
LAWS OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA,
By Arthur Foster,
CONTAINING all the Statutes, and the sub
stance of all the Resolutions, of a aenefal
and public nature, and now of force, which have
been passed in said State from the j ear 1820, to
the year 1829, both inclusive, with occasional
explanatory notes and connecting references, and
a list of the statutes repealed or obsolete. To
which is added an appendix, containing the
constitution of the State of Georgia, as amended-,
also, references to such local acts as relate to
tou-ns, counties. Internal Navigation, County Ac
ademies, Sfc. , and a collection of the most appro
ved forms used in carrying the above named
laws into effect; with a copions Index to the
whole It will he something iike a continuation
of Prince’s Digest repealed or altered. It may
be observed, that the Legislature of Georgia are
in the constant practice of repealing, altering,
or amending Laws passed at their previous »es
sions, so that, without such a Digest or Compi
lation of their, as is now respectfully oflered to
the public, it actually requites a lawyer, or a
person who has devoted much time to the exam
ination and comparison of the different enact
ments of each succeeding session of the Legisla
te e, to be acquainted with all the Taws which
are of force: And having witnessed with much
pleasure the immense public utility and popula- j
rity of the Digest compiled by Oliver H Prince, j
E-q., and t*lso having no doubt but a similar |
Compendium of the Laws from the time of that I
publication down to the present, with the addi- j
tion of the piecedents, or forms, which will be |
placed in the Appendix, and which will add j
greatly to the public utility of the work, and to j
the furtherance ofjustice, would be very useful;
and acceptable to the public, the Compiler has J
ventured upon the arduous and important mi j
det taking However, not relying altogether on !
his ow n judgement, or the experience of Having I
been a member of the Legislatute during the I
p«s*age ol most of the law s now proposed to be
published, and at tlu- administration of them for
t ight years, as a Justice of the Inferior Court, in
a County where much business of an indicate
nature is transacted in that Court and the Court
of Ordinary; after completing the manuscript it
lias been placed in the hauds of gentlemen,
eminently learned tn the law, who. alter a strict
and careful examination, have politely tendered
to him the subjoined Certificates:
I have examined “ A Digest of the laws of
Georgia from 1820 to 1829. inclusive, by A. Fos
ter, Esq." and think the work executed with
judgement and accuracy. The woi k is intend
ed as a eontinution of Prince’s Digest, and is, in
my opinion, well calculated to answer that vain,
able purpose Although the author is not pro
fes'ionally a Lawyer, he seems, in ascertaining
the statutes notr of force, to have added much
care, i xaniinatiou, and study, to his advantages
as a practical legislator, during most of the pe
riod emhrared in his work.

PROSPECTUS
FOR PUBLISHING AT COLUMBUS, GA»
A Political and Miscellaneous Newspaper
TO BE ENTITLED
THE DEMOCRAT.
IN presenting to the public his prospectus for »
new paper at Columbus, the subscriber doc#
not deem it necessary or expedient to go into «*
minute detail of his political doctrines, or ot h»B
particular views in regard to the various topics
which now engage public attention. He pre
some* that his character as an editor is too well
known in Georgia to allow him to gain credit
among any party, with mere professions and
empty promises. The public will be apt to look
to the past, informing their estimate of the fu
ture, and by that ordeal is he willing to be tried.
In the numerous political discussions, which the
event of the day have called forth, his opinions
of men and tliiugs have been publicly expressed,
and are doubtless familiar with many of those to
whom he now looks for patronage und support,
Those who have hitherto approved of h s senti
menfs and been satisfied with the manner in
which he has urged them, will, he trusts, still
continue their confidence, without the renewal of
pledges, ora formal confession of faith.
in refeience however, to the present state of
parties, he begs leave to remark, that he trusts
the absence of all political excitemeDt, will prove
propitious to the cause of truth ; and that now
nil parties, by whatever names they may have
been distinguished will be permitted to labor for
the general welfare, unobstructed by political
jealousy, or the rancor of bygone feuds. Thfr
undersigned will endeavor to extend still further
this geneial cordiality of feeling, and to Allay
the occasional symptoms of exacerbation to
which a warmly contested election may give
rise; and in this, and whatever other measure he
may undertake, for the purpose of advancing
the prosperity ,f the State, he will count on the
cordial co-operation of every good citizen, how
ever they may have previously differed on poinu
ofpolitii al faith.
Attached to the doctrines of the Revolution,
and holding in high veneration the memory of
those heroes and sages, by whom our I berth's
were achieved, and our present admirable form
of government established, the subscriber will
endeavor to manifest the sincerity of his profes
sions. by exciting a feeling of attachment to the
Union, and encouraging nit entuc confidence io
the institutions of out country He will inculcate
the doctrine that it is better to bear a slight and
temper iry evil, against winch we have a consti
tutional remedy, than tn hazard alt for which
our fathers fought, and so many martyrs labored
ami bled. He will not in any respect overlook
or disregard the rights or the interests of his own
state; yet he must always view particular rights
and interests, us relatively connoted with others,
and he will never consent to the sacrifice of u
greater foi a lesser good
The subsetiher will endeavor to make The
Democrat a vehicle of general intelligence, and
an interesting periodical lo the gentlemen of Jit
eiatiue, the agriculturalist, the merchant and
mechanic. C. F. BARTLETT.
