shew the necessity of the scrutiny he ad
vocated, from the probable character of
the meeting drawn from the manner.-dti
which the Convention was got up, the
circumstances attending its progress, and
the principles avowed by in advocates,
which, he said, had been blazooed and
set up, as the serpent in the wilderness, at
which every one that looked should bn
saved, with an emphasis, which indicated
a stronger disposition in him to say “ be
damned.” And first , said he very me
thodically, I will begin with the honora
ble gentleman from Ciark. I thought
Clayton grew pale. He brought iu his
Toast at Laurens Court-House, in which
he said “ Nullification is the rightful rem
edy,” &c. Here Mr. Clayton jumped
up, and said he had said so, and would say
so again ; but that he had then explain
ed, and would explaiu again, when the
gentleman had concluded. Hr re the
Chair was again appealed to, to say
whether it was in order to proceed iu
such remarks, and so much confusion pro
duced, that, under the supposed decisiou
of the Chair, Col. Cumming took anoth
er course. Mr. Spalding in his harangue,
Wanting to use the word, Nullification,
pretended to have forgotten the term, and
said to those around him, what-—what do
you call it l which excited as much meri
merit, as his clapping himself down so
suddenly iu his seat, after he had vented
all that he had to say, in and out of ord
er. Mr. Forsyth noticed the repeated
invocations of Liberty, which Rockwell
and other speakers hud made, and said,
lie loved that liberty, which, in angel
form, brought peace from Heaven—not
that, which in demon shape spreads civil
'discord through his country. lie loved
that liberty, which equally presided over
the revels of the rich man’s palace, and
smiled eu the happiness es the poor man’s
cottage. Bat I cannot remember the
beautiful expressions, with which, in an
under tone, he charmed a breathless au
dience. In the course of his remarks,
having occasion to, notice Nullification,
he did not, like Mr. Spalding, feign went
of recollection, or study honied phraseol
ogy, but called it plainly a u nonsensical”
doctrine. I thought instantly of the two
Delegates from South-Carolina, who, by >
invitation of the Convention, wero'sitting
in the House, and my eye ran hastily to
Judge'Harper. He stood the fiie with
hi s accustomed composure.
Col. Alfred Cuthbert from Jasper, is
one of the most effective speakers in the
‘Convention. He has spoken but twice,
time producing adjournment, which
he advocated as the means of promoting
calmness, and proven ing precipitancy.—
lie is very animated ; but his voice, which
is hoarse and wheezing, appears to have
suffered from former efforts. Although
sometimes extravagant in his expressions,
his good sense and patriotic sentiments
always command respect and ensure the
appropriate response. 1 have said
but little of Mr. Berrien’s style/ He
is a polished speaker. Always ch isle and
rorroef, iu his expressions, he never
lessens «ho dignity of his station by puerile
Jennceiu, or cam phrases. Bu! he is 100
par-tic u lar. You look upon Mr. Derri
en as an actor—die plays the orator.
Though willing to gain the eclat of a lofty
flight, he appears afraid to trus' himself
to the effort. He, therefore, skims the
lower clouds, iu a beautiful, graceful
sweep —never soars, like the eagle, in the
face of the sun, and pours down the glory
of lofty conceptions on a ravished audi
ence. Probably tbe difference between
him and Mi. Forsyth may be understood,
by saying, Forsyth is a man of gonius—
the other, of acquirements. • 1
Representative Chamber , I
November 15th—3 o’clock. J
The Convention met. Forsyth moved
ihe postponement of the consideration o(
his resolutions till to-morrow. Mr. Ber
rien seconded tbe motion*. ~ Carried.
Judge Clayton moved the adjournment
till 10 o’clock to-morrow in the Metho
dic Church. Carried. 'This was all
done without debate iu a few 'miiiu es,
which evidences some expectation, that
the difficulties in the way of this body’s
acting, miy be removed. It is probable
that some course will be arranged betweeu
live leaders, and resolutions adopted by
consent, which may be permitted to go to
the world for what they are worth, but
not as representing the sentiments of the
whole people of the State in Convention.
Letters from Judges Johnsoo and Harper,
merely announcing iu what character thoy
appeared, aud tendering any information
they possessed, were received, amd read,
and referred to the committee es 21. Mr
Forsyth prefaced his propositiop to post
pone further discussion on his resolutions,
with a single remark, that he understood
from the gentleman from M'lntosh,
(Spalding, who is Chairman, 1 believe, of
• mb-committee of the 21,) that ab ar
rangement could be made which would
remove at least some es the difficulties.
• This short sessiou disappointed the
Crowded house,' who did net expect so
sudden a termination of their, amusement.

One hundred dollars reward.
RANAWAY from the subscriber, living near
Frankiin, Troup county, Georgia, on tips
7th of October, a negro man named TITUS,
but generally called JOHN, of a yellow com
plexion, with a small star on his face—of a good
lively countenance —about five He. t six or eight
inches high—about 30 years of rge, and but
little heard, aud weighs aboQt one hundred and
thirty five. It may be possible that the above
negro has been conveyed off by some wagon
from the frontiers of Georgia, to Macon or Art.
gusta, as the negro is very fond of wagoning—
or some evil disposed.person may have given
him a pass to go to North Carolina, as lie was

If the above described negrt) is taken in the com
pany of a white man carrying him off, I wifi
give the above reward for the negro and thief,
