mankind to undervalue what they have
immediately within (heir reach.
The Trout, as he glides carelessly
through the blue waters, excites all the
interest of the impatient angler. But
so soon as he has it fairly in his posses
sion, the anxiety he felt whilst the fish
was at liberty and out ol his reach imme
diately subsides inm a careless indiffer
ence, and lie baits his lioolt anew aud
casts it again into the stream in qoest of
/r larger prize* - Although his success
may have exceeded his most sanguine ex
pectations—-although 'his fish may have,
been an intruder on the dominion of min
nows and for them he angled without an
expectation of a better ‘nibble; yet, so
soon as he is in possession of his prey he
scarcely thinks he has been over lucky,
and is astonished and disappointed at not
obtaining another of superior value, when
t-he one he has already, is a stranger
from the mighty deep, and is a rate visit
ant in such shallow waters.
This is just the case with the world in
regard to race horses. If Matclieni or
{■he English Eclipse themselves, wore hoie
with all their fame, their blood would not
boas desirable, their cross would not bo
regarded with as much affection as it is at
present, for then it would be in the pi»wer
.of all and now it is beyond the reach of
any control. Some years ago [ saw the
■necessity there would be in a short time
of having across for the mares in this
State g..t by Archy horses, sod determined
a<i soon as l saw a hoi so whose performan
ces were better and whose ability to car
rtf weight greater than any other in the
United Slates, I would purchase him,
cost what he might. Since that time i
have watched with the most uutiriog at-i
tention, the performance of every horse
of distinction, with an eye to that purpose
and COLLIER is the horse of my Sel
ection ; and since the days of Gimcrack,
«( England, he has never, had 'an equal.
The Turf Register has lor 2 years been
teeming with nothing but Ins victories &•
hate is one thing, pm Ocularly, that struck
my attention—Col. W. R. Johnson is
the Napoleon of the turf, and ite suffers
no horse to gain reputation if he can pre
vent it. He was compelled to meet Col
lier at every Course wherever ho went
4* contended with hiotfur the JockyClub.
Allot meeting with repeated defeat, am
bition and inletest prompted him at once
to a tempt to break him down, and for
that purpose he put forward his best horse
under the care of the celebtatod Arthur
Taylor, and the direction of his own
judgement. All this 1 observed atteutiv-
Iv, and maiked the result.—Charlotte
Temple (full sister to Gohannalt) was
brought to the contest, but a single trial
Convinced her otvmr that aha was scarce
lv able to give him exercise. Sally
Walker was then compelled to tty her
fortune, but with no belter success. He
then (tied his lavoiite mare slender, (lull
sister to the B mnets of Blua) but iu a
single heat of 4 miles in nuking a des
perate effort to come up to him, being a
spirited animal and utged p «st her ability
she fell, broke the spine of her back, aod
died on the ground. Ho (hen bought (he
celebrated Polly Hopkins and bieugh'
Iter to the contest—hut the long &steady
stride ol Collier was too much for her:
great was the effort she made to come up
to him, and until] towards the termination
of the heat Collier was compelled to go a'
merry gait to keep clear of hot: just at
his branches she lav, and bottom being
the each away they flew both see
ming delei mined neithet to give nor re*
ceive qoacers. There was no laboring no
wailing but on ihevwent at a killing pace,
untill they entered no the last mile when
the rate began t« tell on the mare, and
every moment evidenced the gap between
them. The whip and spur was freely
applied but it was moie than she enujd
stand—She, finally sunk, exhausted, from
she contest without even thu ability t osave
her distance.
In the same n«l vertisrmer.t, the owners say
they sie averse to Puffing. They refer to his
performances as his best letters of recommen
ria ioo, an t giv<t) the following story (rum the
'Surf Register, loht iu relation to them:
In an examination by you, ofthe Turf Register, I think I
airnll be as fortunate as the Kentuckian who was introduced
to a Spanish widow on the coos between Natchez and New
Orleauß. It was understood between the parties before they
tnet that they sought each others acquaintance for the pur
pose of driving a trado Immediately uftcr hearing hor lov
ers name pronounced, with a good deal of affection she asked
him for his letters of recommend lion.” The Kentuckian,
with the greatest sangfroid, drew out his pocket bonk and
commenced running ov r SIOO bills (of Uncie Sam's bank,
good money too, any where, you know) with “such as these
madam, such as these,” which uompletely satisfied the wid
ow of his respectability, Ac. Ac. And if you will ju.t take
the trouble to turn over the pages of the Sporting Maga
zine iu every racing calender you will find “such as these
and such asthese.”
The following is n description of bitn :
* COLLIER is a Sorrel with exactly the marks of Trifle,
Annett and Ooliah, and precise) > the make marks and ap
pearance of Flying Childers and English Eclipse, n the
American Turf Register, paije 512, you will se - a compa
rison between Collier and :■ clipse, in which tke writer
says that there is n gre ter resemblance between the two
than any other racer in the U States, He is full 15 h inds
two and a half inches high, with more length of body aud
atreguth of loin, than auy horse I ever saw. His body
when in training, instead of being tucked, ii as round as a
tree, and you oan scarcely see a rib in it. His quarters are
entirely different from the rest of the Archy Stock, beiug
strong, broad and full, exactly like Eclipse, and inthc lump
of ois launches lies the excellency of his pe formance. —
His limb- you know must be equal to Cast-steel, or the
number and length of his races, together with the woight
he had to carry, would have broken him down along ago.
But on them there ii not a single hair amisss, nor a kuot as
big as the head of a pin. Although he can scarcely ever
}>e said to have beta out of training since a two year old,
yet he has now the life and spirits of a coll, with the activ
ity of the Antelope, and the endurance of the Fox-hound.
COLLIER is by Sir Charles, the only horse in the United
States whose reputation can compare with that of his sire,
Sir Archy. -ir Charles’dam is by Citizen [imported] who
i« the sire of Old Facolet, «rc. and he is the sire of An
drew, Sussex, Sally Hornet, "parrowhawk, Annett, Trifle,
Yankee Maid. Clifford, Slender, Mercury, Havoc, Mal
colm, Bonnets O'Blue, Ac. die.—all of whom Collier has
beaten that dare oppose him.

TO THE PUBLIC.
WHY the Union Hotel Property Lottery is
offered to the public! is frtqueuily ask
ed ; and that the whole matter is not well enough
particularized. , *
The Propi it tor finding himself involved—
Mortgaged his‘lauded Estate to one, and his
Negroes to another, (two of lit*, oldest) of his
creditors. With this view that if he could not
be abl. to raise the mortgages, that |he would in
such events take the besicourse with his Pro
perty to pay his debts. Or in other words pay
the other creditors.as well as .the Mortgagees.
Accordingly with him as with others, his re;:S;-n
--nble views failed. And in oxter to do justice te
others of his creditors, us well as the Mortga
ges; He has oflVred his property in the plan
now before the public.
The proper!/ lias been valued by four highly
distinguished and disinterested gentlemen at
$20.000 —Rod ditided into four thousand whole
Tick) ts at five doi lars each. Reference to the
Scheme for the Prizes aud (heir discription.—
Also the creditors appointed, under seal, six
highly distinguished and disterested gentlemen
to atteud ;»i Assignees, and the public sanctioned
the whole &c.
Now if the Proprietor shall fail hy the second
of next mon'h to-sell T ickets enough to pay the*
two Moi tgages, (which is less than half the.
whole amount of the said stock.) then the Lot
tery must fail, and but little m >re w.Il he be able
to pay than the said, Mortgages and he be . left
indebt with a wife and six small children with
neither properly nor credit But on the other
hand, If lie sells his Tickets sufficient and.
above to. pay .the Mortgages then his other ere
ditors will be materially benefited, and he will
be enabled with his stock to pay his debts. And
tho’ he will have no property, he will be clear of
debt; nnd he trusts reclaim his credit.
The great anxiety of the proprietor to sell his
Tickets—rests on this, to do justice to his other
creditors as well as his two Mortgages, and to
pay his debts with a property at least worth
more than ir is offered at
If thou wert indebt instead of me
.Then 1 would buy of thee,
Bat I am indebt instead of thee.
Then come and buy of me.
And by said purchase let me say
* You make a fortune evety day.
Then Hasten, the Tickets to buy,
Or my Credits, me will nullity !!*!.'
