LAW OF GEORGIA
AN ACT to provide for the call of a
Convention to reduce the number ol
the General Assembly of the State
of Georgia, and for other purposes
therein named. -
Be it enacted by tlie Senate and House
of Representatives of the State of Geor
gia in General Assembly nu t , and it is
hereby enacted by the au*hority of the
same, T hat the first Monday in April.
1833, be, and the same is hereby desig
nated and set apart as the day on which
the citizens of Georgia qualified to vote
for members ol the Legislature, shall at
the several places prescribed by law for
holding such elections vole for delegates
to represent them in Convention, in num
ber equal to their representation in belli
branches of the General Assembly; such
elections to be conducted, managed af»d
certified under tho same law as art? ol
force in respect to elections of members
of the Gcner.al Assembly.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That
it shall be the duty of such managers to
transmit to his excellency the Governor
the result of said elections under the laws
now of force for conducting managing and
certifying elections of membersof General
Assembly as aforesaid, within 30 days af
ter such elec ions —Whereupon it is made
the duty of His Excellency the Govern
or to issue his proclamation declaring the
result of said elections by naming the
individuals severally elected to tepresent
the good people of Georgia in Convention
as contemplated by this »^ct.
Sec. 3, And be it further enacted, That
every citizen of the United Stales shall be
eligible to a seat in said Convention who
has attained the age of twenty five years,
and been an inhabitant of this State seven
years immediately preceding the day of
hiselection and who shall have resided
one year in the county far which he shall
be elected.
Sec. 4, And be it further enacted, Thai
each member returned as duly elected,
shall previous to taking Iris seat in said
Convention take the following oath, or
affirmation, viz: I, A. B. do solmnly
swear, that I will not attempt to add to,
or take from the constitution r attempt
to change or alter any other section,clause
or article of the constitution of the S ate
of Geoigia, other than those touching the
representation in the Geneial Assembly
thereof; and that.l have been a citizen
of this state for the last seven years, so
help me God. And any person elected
to a seat in said Convention, who shall
refuse to take (he orth aforesaid,shall not
be allowed to take his seat in said Con
vent ion.
<Sec. 5, And be it further enacted,'That
the members of said Convention shall
assemble on the first Monday in M.iy af
ter their election, at Milledgeville, in
the Representative Chamber of tho Slate
House, for the purpose of on tet ing upon
and consummating rfie great objects of
their convention, to-vvit: a reduction and
equalization of the General Assembly;
shall have power to preset ibe their own
rules and forms of business, and to deter
mine on the qualifications of their own
members; elect necessary officers, and
make all orders which they may deem
cenductive to the fut llierance of the ob.

semble.
Sec 6, And be it further enacted,That
it shall be the duty of His Excellency the
Governoi to give publicity lo the altera
tions and amendments made in the Con
stitution in reference to the direction [re- :
duction] of the number of the members
composing the General Assembly, and
the first Monday in October next, after
the rising of the said Convention, he shall
fix for the ratification, of such new arti
cles as they may make for the object of
reduction and equalization of the Gener
al Assembly only: and if tatified by a ma
jority of the Voters who vote mi the ques
tion of “Ratification” or“ No Ratification
(Hen and in that event, the alterations
so by them made and ratified, shall I e
binding on the people of this State and
not otherwise.
Sec. 7 And be it further enacted, That
it shall be a fundamental at tide in the
formation or amendment pf the Consti
tution, that each county of the S<ate now
organized or laid ont, or which may her
after bo created by law, shall be entitled
to at least one representative in the rep
resentative branch of the Genet al Assem
bly.
Sec. 8, And be it further enacted, That
so soon as this act shall have become a
law. His Excellency the Governor,be, &,
he is hereby required to cause it to be
published in the Gazettes of this State,
once a week until ihe day fixed on bv
tltis act for the election of delegates to
said Convention; and that all laws and
pans of laws militating against this act,
be, the same are hereby repealed
