r who * |,f ® ** a k« to th« blessing proffer
ed to them ; they were unwilling, with a
very few exceptions, to embrace the of
fer made to their Guardians, in conse
quence, we have reason to believe of the
many false rumours which were circula
ted respecting Liberia. But these pre
judices >re subsiding before the influ
ence which truth ever exercises over the
impressions of falsehood.
Having thus briefly reviewed our trans*
actions during the first year, we will now
proceed to state a few facts connected with
the operations of the Parent Society.
At its late anniversary, held in the Repre
sentative Cham, of the Capitol, at Wash
,iogtoo'City, James Madison of Virginia,
'fate President of the United States, was
elected President of the Parent Society,
to fill thevactmcy occasioned by the death
of the venerable Charles Carroll of Car
rollton ; and the list df Vice-Presidents
is still graced by the name of the illus
trious La fay etui, the favorite alike of
two continents and of wo generations.
It was stated in the report of the Board
of Managers to the Society, that J9O
emigrants had left the United States for
Liberia, during the past year ; of whom,
343 were free persons of colour: that the
agriculture of the colony was improving ;
the cultivation of Coffee (an article of
vast importance to the commerce of our
country) was extending, one individual
alone having recently planted 20,000,
trees: that vuluable animals had been
introduced : that commerce and naviga
tion were rapidily advancing ; 57 vessels
having entered the Port of Monrovia du~
ring the past year, and that the trade
with the interior was now unobstructed :
That education was rouCh cherished,
eight schools having bjgen already estab
lished : that open immoralities were
rare: and, that the Sabbath day was
strictly observed. One of the gentle
men who addressed this meeting, the Rev.
Mr. Mammett of Virginia, remarked that
bespoke the feelings and views of the
Church to which he belonged. At the
last general conference of the Methodist
Episcopal Church, held at Philadelphia,
winch was attended by delegates from
every state in the union, a resolution was
unanimously adopted, instructing the Min
isters of their Church to aid the objects
of the society ; and giving permission to
(he Bishops to act as its agents. The
pumber of these Ministers was Ten
Thousand , the members of the Church
numbered more than six hundred thou
sand, and their hearers exceeded three
millions. The influence of this Church,
vast, extensive and increasing, as it is,
would, he assured the Society, jje exerted
in thoir favour.
These cheering assurances cannot fail
to animate the Putriots and PlrH'anthro
pists of the Parent Society, to renewed
fend increased exe'rtion, which we may
humbly hope will he followed by the fa
vor »fa gracious Providence, the appro
bation of their own consciences, and the
smiles of nn admiring world.
Augusta , 5 h March, 1833.
After the above Report was read the
meeting proceeded to the election of a

ensuing year, which resulted in the choice
of the following gentlemen., viz:—

GRANDEUR OFASTRONOMICA
DISCOVERIES.
By WILLIAM WJRT
It was a pleasent evening in the month
of May, and niy sweet elid’d, my Rosaline,
and I had sauntered up to the castle’s top
to enjoy the breeze that played around it,
and to admire the unclouded firmament
that glowed and spatkled wiib unosal lus
tre from pole to polo. The atmosphere
was in its purest and finest state of vision ;
the milkyway was distinctly developed
throughout its whole exte..t;'every planet
and every star above the it nr its n, howev
er near and brilliant, or distant and faint,
lent its ambient light or twinkling ray to
give variety aud beamy to the.hemisphere:
while the round, bright'moon (so distinct
ly defined, were the lines of her figoie,
aqd so clearly visible even the rotundity
of her form*) seemed to hang off from the
azure vault, suspended in midway air:
or stooping forward from the firmament
her fair and radiant face, as if to court
and return onr gaze.
We amused ourselves for some time in,
observing through a telescope the planet
Jupiter, sailing in silent majesty with his
squedron of satellites along the vast ocean
of space between us and the fixed stars;
admired the felicity of that design, by
which those dis'tunt bodies had been par
celled out and arranged into constella
tions, so as to have served not only for
beacons to the ancient navigator, but ns
it were for land marks to ustroiK.mers of
of this day; enabling them, through dif
ferent countries,to indicate to each other
with ease the placo and motion of these
planets, cornels and magmficieui meteors
which inhabit, revolve, and play in the
intermediate spate.
We recalled and dwelt with delight on
the rise and pi ogress of the scbiicc of as
tronomy; or that set ies of astonishing dis
coveries through successive ages, which"
display, in so strong a light, the foice and
reach of the human mind; and on those
bold conjectures and sublime reveries,
which seem to tower even to the confines
of divinity, and det.ote the high destiny*
to which moitals tend; that thdiight, fin
instance, which is said to have'-been first
stated by Pythagoras, and which modern
astronomers approve J that the stats which
we caH fixed, although they appear to us
nothing more than Huge spangles of va
rious sizes glittering on the saute concave
surface, are nevertheless, bodies as large
as oor suu, shining, like him, with origi
nal, and oot reflected light, placed at in
calcuable distances asunder, and oachstat
the solar centre of a system <>l [dstieix,
which revolvo around it,as these belong
ing to our system d>> mound too-sun, ilia*
this in not only the case with all the stars
which our eyes discern in the firmament,
or which the telescope has brought within
the sphere of our vision, but. according
to the modern •improvements of this
thought, that there are probably otbet
stars whose light lias not yet reached us,
although light moves »i h velocity a mil
lion times greater than that of a cannon
bal|: that those luminous appearances
which we observe in the firmament like
flaskes of thin, white cloud, are windows,
as it were, which open to other firma
ments, fat, far beyond the ken of humao
eye, or the power df optical instruments,
lighted up, tike outs, with hosts of stars or
suns; that this scheme goes on through
infinite space, which is filled with thou
sands of those suns, attended bv ten thou
sand times ten thousand worlds, all in
rapid motion, yet calm, regular atwl Har
monious, invariably keening the paths
prescribed to them; and these world
peopled with myriads of intelligent be
ings.
One would think that this conception,
thus extended, would be bold enough to
satisfy the whole emerprize of human
imagination. But what an accession of
glory and magnificence elites Dr. Herschei
superadd when inste id of supposing all
those suns fixed, and the motion confined
to their respective planets, he loosens*
those multitudinous suns themselves from
their stations, sets tlte n all Into motion j
with their splendid.retinue oi planets* ami
satellites, and imagines them thus alien
ded, to perform a stupendous revolution .
