xasiom We are ever pleased to see her on the
stage; for she unites in her person and manners,
all that we have seen or conceded of dignity of
deportment added to the modesty of unassuming
merit, which are a source never fading to afford
pleasure, admiration and respect.
. Before we leave this subject, we cannot forbear
noticing the Roderigo of Mr. Dalton. This gen
tleman is unquestionably a good performer; bis
Quries Surface deserves praise, to which almost
every character which he performs we think is
equally entitled, yet we cannot say that his Kodi
ngo dcsenres it, for we conceive that Shakspeare
never intended to make a buffoon of that charac
ter; if we have formed'd just conception of it he
meant it as that of a weak, credulous nun, easily
deceived by the designing; but not of a merry'

Saturday evening gave a ticji repast to our City
Shexkespeare's celebrated tragedy <f “Othello,
l was acted by, we believe, as good a company as are
I on any other American stage. Mr. Cooke in
| Othtlts, tvaa enough to reach the bottom of the
w heart, even were it made of adamant—the actions,
the gestures, the voice, were all so accordant
" with the views of the celebrated author, that it
teemed to enwrap the audience in both terror and
admiration. The interest which Mr. C. excited
from the commencement of the play, never, for
one instant drooped; and at various stages of the
performance he would alternately bold his spec-
t* tatuca io uttar. -amassment at the devetopement
of his great and extensive powers, or draw from
them sudden and reiterated bursts of applause,
as almost to confound the tense of hearing.
Mr. Cuutav in his logo, done it great justice—
the dissimulation which he so strongly portray edin
creating that dreadful jealousy ir. the Iteart of the
Moor, was truly great. The character of logo
Is very difficult to delineate—the actor m ust pos.
acss all the great variety of requisites necessary
to accomplish a finished portrait of this part; and
to make a deep impression on an audience.—
Such an actor has, however, rarely been found —
Mr. Cleary was uncommonly successful, and in
the majority of the play, he came up fully to the
general expectation of the audience. This gen
tleman gives out strong predictions of future
greatness. His readings aTe remarkably correct,
bis attitudes peculiarly striking; and lie was in an
eminent degree impressive and efftefive. We
doubt if his logo cat! be equalled by any one at
present on the American boards. We have nut
aeen any one excell him, save the celebrated
Cooks.
Mr. Fix* in Ctutio, the unfledged honorr.bl -
character which be so lully reptesenud, is an
honor to a Savannah theatre. Mr F’s perform
ance Was perfectly correct, and is considered by
Ihigp whose opinions cry at the top of our own
to be inimitable. We frankly confess Us is a fa
vorite of ours.
Mt. Dasixox done the character of Rodergo
truly. He is growing strongly every day in the
affections of the audience.
In Dcsdcmona, we sever have witnessed a
greater than Mrs. Guaxwr. In the handkerchief
scene with Othello, the strong endearing feminine
aoul is great, when she finds her honor doubted by
Othello, Mrs: Giifert, in richness and variety of
*one; in propriety and justness of aetioo and ges
ture; in nerv out mellowed modulation; in appro
priate deportment; above all, in the discriminating
delicacy of tavte, by which she distinguishes and
exposes the feelings and workings of the heart,
she is abovepraise.
Mrs. BaxmiTT, we believe, never appeared to
greater advantage at our theatre, than in tbc
character of Amelia—the powers with which she
su^orted her character, htul great effect are
giving eclat to the others.
The litte after-piece of “The Purse," was per
formed with great apirit Mr. Duns did full
justice to Will Steady: and his Sail was well
'represented by Mrs. Waatso. We cannot dis-
miss this piece without exp rearing our pleasure
at the playi-g of Miss Cuke. The part assigned
her was admirably supported.
This evening Mr. Cocrxa plays‘Roism—much
fti wr wish to >« € him in this character, it is
hoped he will not disappoint the wishes of the
community, whp disire to witness his re-ippear-
anoe in "Gamlet ” J; SOPHOCLES.

Office of the Savannah River Navigation
Company,
REPORT:
It having been confidently expected by the stock
holders in this company, that in pursuance of the
articles ot association, a dividend would have been
declared on the first instant: Therefore, in order
to prevent this circumstance having undue
influence on the public miiid, the directors deem
it tlieir duty to lay before the public the facts
which have really prevented the declaration of a
dividend.
Thia company commenced its operations in
June last, at a season when the boating business
is scarcely ever profitable, but in the commence,
ment of their operations they laboured under
much more than ordinary disadvantages, and the
boats employed seldom more than paid expenses.
The river was unprecedently low, and the com
pany had only a choice of evils, either to have
their boats sent up with scarcely half a cargo, or,
incur the expense of taking out a great part of
their cargo by lighters, and such has constantly
been the state of the river until within less than
two months.
The high price of labor, (being nearly double
former ordinary rates) has influenced the direc
tors to purchase slaves for navigating the com
pany’s boats, and they have already procured
thirty-nine for that purpose, convinced that it
will be a certain and effectual mode of making
the business profitable; aud enable this company
successfully to compl-.te with others. The di
rectors conceive tliit the business when in full
operation, even if the boats be in agreat measure
navigated by hired hands, will be profitable, and
they are now rigidly economising the expenses of
the company.
Through the enterprising activity of the late
president Mr Brux, the company is possessed of
a patent lor a floating dry dock, and have a dock
now actually in operation by which nearly one
.half of the ordinary expenses of repairs, is saved
the company; and by the means uf ix. almost
the boats have undergone a thorough repair.
