MIRACULOUS ESCAPE!
The editor of the Savammh Republican has
been politely furnished with the following extract
from tlie Journal of rapt. Jatkz, of Ihe ship Ogle
thorpe, which sailed from this port on the 16th of
Dec. last, for Liverpool, detailing the particular,
of a serous accident by lightning, on the 27th
D.’C. 11 day* after having dnciiargcd her pilot:—
-Saturday, Dec 27, 1813—Ttiese 24 hours com.
mence with fre.-h breezes and squally; stirs
our mainmast was struck with lightning; in about
10 minutes, found tlie ship to be on (ire; called all
hinds, took in all sail but the close reef maiu-top-
•ail, and laid tlie ship too with her bead to tlie
south; all hand- now employed clearing out the
steerage, if possible, to get at the fire; got up the
small bow er cable, and many oilier thing;, in order
to break out cotton, which we found very difficult,
to do. At 3 o’clock sent a man a loft to look out
who returned in a few minute* and *aw nothing;
ommenced to hoist out cotton on deck.
At ) past 3 o’clock, was so stiffed with smoke we
were obliged to retreat from between decks —
at t!,is time it appeared almost impossible to
save the ship—shut ihe cabin, gangway, and
steerage hatch. Ail communication w-:th the ca
bln was prevented by smoke. Called all hand* aft,
and told them they inu-t be collected and now pre
pare the host to le:.vc the ship. Sent a man aloft
who descried a sn! appcartntlv standingdua n for
us; set cur ensign, union down, at the maintopgal-
lantmast head, it blcwingfa gale, accompanied with
heavy rain. At half past 4 the boat was readyfor
hois ing out, with some provisions, compass,
charts, quadrant and many little things that would
be useful We nowr assembled together on the
quarter deck, aa then it appeared for the last
lime to consult. The crew were very ateady and
executed their orders pr naptiy. The decks, in a
line directly across the snip, abaft the pump-well
now became so heated, that tbe pitch began to
ooze out from the seams of the decks. We sup.
posed trum appearances that the plank was near
ly burnt through—suggested at this time, the on
ly and last resort, to cut holes through tlie deck
and pour water down, in which we were fortu
nate enough to succeed in. From side to side,
we found, from the upper to the lower deck, the
ship entirely in flames; and it vu with the great,
est difficulty we could prevent it from communi-
^ating on deck through the holes. At 5, we now
perceived the fire had abated in some measure.—
On the larboard side, it being to leward, the wa
ter had run to more advantage. We then got the
ship before thr wind for a short time; and found
i hat we had cut the holes from side to ride di
rectly over the principal line of tbe fire; being
guided by the dryness of tbe deck and pitch rix-
ing from tlx soma At half past 5, we opened
the steerage hatch, and found in a short time the
smoke much abated; we could not, however, as
ye: eadure the smoke, so as to werk at the cot
ton in tlie steerage—we kept applying water and
cutting through the deck. At 6, by tun again,
with our head to the south. No .man could now
remain but a short tine in the steerage—by perse.
veran.ee, however, we came to the cotton, that was
entirely on fire, at hrif nzrt 6: and by breaking
