“PHILO AKIs I IDES,” is crowded out of this

sage.
fly the brig Pantliea, arrived last evening, from
New York we have received papers of Thursday
list—four days in anticipation of the mail. They
contain no news whatever.
Mr. Hernandez, one of the delegates to con.
gress from Florida, passed through town this
morning on his way to Washington.
U. S. CONGRESS.
Ilotli houses of Congress ibrmed a quorum on
the first day, Mr. Gillian! took the chsir of Sen
ate; tnd Mr Barbour that of the fluuss of repre
sentatives. This body then proceeded to the
choice of a clerk, at which they made several fruit
less attempts and adjourned without making the
appointment. The next day, 3d inst the Presi
dent transmitted his message to both houses,
whfch will be found in precceding columns. In
the relations of this country with others, the presi
dent informs us that there is not the least danger
to be apprehended that its tranquility will be dis
turbed by its foreign concerns ; and that all our
alfairs are in a happy and prosperous condition.
As the present session of Congress is limited in its
continuance it is to be hoped that time valuable
to the public will not be consumed in the idle pa
rade of oratorial display.
The Mexican Minister and Suite arrived at
Baltimore on the 2d instant.
The directors of the U. 8. Rank have determin
ed to increase the capital of the branch at N. York
—say one million of dollars.
The new Theatre in Philadelphia opened on
the 2d instant, for the seaaon. Mr. Wood deliv.
ered an address written by Mr. Sprague, with
considerable effect.
On the 30th nit. New Haven was visited with s
violent gale of wind. Several vessels broke from
their moorings in the harbor, and sustained con
siderable damage.
FROM NASSAU.
By the packet s hr. Swift, capt Burger, arrived
yesterday, we have received our file of the Baha
ma) Gazette to Saturday, 30th ult. inclusive The
only article of intelligence furnished by them, is
the pleating fconfirmat ion of the destruction of
several piratical vessels, on the coast of Cuba, (a
rumour of which had reached us some days since)
by capt. Godfrey, of II. II. M ship Tyne, and L'.
Geary, of H. B. M. schooner Speedwell. About
40 of the pirates are supposed to have been kill
ed in the engagement; 17 were taken prisoners
by the British, an I 22 (who fled to the shore,) by
the Spanish authorities. These latter are repor.
ted to have been immediately executed; and the
17 taken to Nassau, will no doubt meet with t .eir
deserts in a like summary manner.
Capt Burger, we are sorry to add, brings a re
port ol the lots of the U. S. sclir. Alligator, "Lt
Dale, on the coast of Florida—the report reached
Nassau on Saturday, 30th ult. by one of the Flori
da wreckers, who stated that the cew had been
taken on board a brig bound to N. Orleans This
report did not receive full credit at Nassau; hut
we are afraid it is but too true, as an officer of the
schooner Nancy k Marv, the last of the vessels
re captured by the Alligator, arrived at this port,
informed that they saw a large armed schr. ashore
near Carysf rt Reef, full of men, and greatly re-
srmbling the Alligator in appearance Her non.
arrival at Norfolk, is also ca'culated to add strength
to the report.— Char, Courier, 9th mil.
[The above account of the loss of the Alligi.
tor is too true. Part of the crew of this vessel
lias arrived at Norfolk, in the brigantine Ann
Maria. The Alligator was lost on Carysforl Reef]
The editors of the A'atoinal Intelligencer,
after publishing an account of the recent
exploit of the U. S. schr Alligator, and of
the death of Lieut. Alldn, thus express
themselves:—-“A retributive justice, wc
forcce, is about to overtake these despe
rate villains in the West India seas, who
set at dcliance t ihe laws of God and man.
Roused by their repeated atrocities, a storm
of indignant energy shall sweep them from
the ocean; nor ought the land to afford them
refuse. The spirit of our honest tars butch
ered in cold blood—of our valiant Allen,
slain in battle, cry aloud for vengeance!
And in this rase Vengeance is Justice J”
