The Venezu cEat»pr>ate armed schooner Caro
ny, Wilfiam Saunders, master, arrived at this port
on Sunday evening last. She left Margsretta on
the l*ih June, is eortpa-iy with admiral Hrion’s
fleet, and die United States’ stoop of war, the llor.
net. captain Haed. The squadron under Union
were bound to St Barthotomews,—they intended
touching there, lor ti* purpose of canning si.
veral transports, that had *in board neat 2000
troops, to the Oroonoko. Tlie troops were from
England, and hsd been landed at St. Bartholo
mews some time since. Tlie patriots hare in
their possession the whole of the interior of the
country as far down as Laguira. The Spaniards
were String out an eipeditinn to go against the
patriots; a simultaneous attack by land and water
was contemplated. Admiral Orion was making
e> cry exertion to prepare for die rencontre,
was supposed that in the course of 2 mouths tht
contest would be dtcidrd, and tlut it would re
sult in favor of the patriots. *
Tlie Carony was sent out by admiral Orion with
despatches for tlie Veucautlian minister, who re
sides at Philadelphia. Capt Saunders it also bear
er of despatches from captain Heed t.f the Grated
States’ ship Unmet, to tlie secretary of the navy;
and has brought a number of letters from the
officers on board that, ship to their frierds in
tliis county. They hare all been deposited in die
post-office of this city. Captain gauntlets, i tales
that, the Hornet was to prpcced to Copenhagen
about ten days after he parted with her. .Mr. Ire
sv'to, Who went out in the Hornet as one of the
commissioners of the United Stales, had left her,
and gone on board admiral Brion’a flag ship,-in
which be would proceed to St. Bartholomews
and from thence to tlx Oroonoko, where the head
quarters of the patriot army were.
The Carnny was bound to New-Tork, but on
Thursday last in lat. 30, 03, Ion. 78, 30, site fell
in with a Spanish sloop of war, by whom she was
much crippled: but by great exertion and swift sail
i"g made her escape, as will appear by the fob
towing extract from her log book:—
••On tlie 2d inst. fell in with a brig much the ap.
pearanee of a cruiser—when she immediately
bore down upon us with die Dm nos Ayresn col-
ora flyug WeIrastid our ensign—the b.-igthen
hauled sfownthe U. A. flag and hoisted tlie Spani-b
royal flag of Spain, and commenced a heavy Cre-
hcrcrcw at the same time giving dine cheers —
The brig then kept away under our stern ai d
fired a broadside into u*. which cut away our rig
ging and injured uur sa Is very much. The brig
then dropped on our Ice quarter, when we then
to< k opportunity and made every exrrtion to get
clear of her. which was done, by getting nut
sweeps, setting the square sail arnl: II other ra'ls
that were manageable. The main haul)ards being
cut away and the main sail down at the time. After
repairing the haulyards so as to set the main ail
and gaff topsail, found w-e h ft the brig fast—she
dropping to leeward—At half pa-t seven o’clock
her shot fell short of us. At 8. r at. the gave up
tlie chase and licked to the southward. At day
light discovered that three of tlie shrouds with
the jib and main stay were shot away; and stand,
iug rigging literally out to pieces, as well aa die
sails—having over 300 shot holes in them—one
shot in the hull between wind and water, end sc-

The Carony lias put into this port to repair
damiges. _
We learn, (says the .Yntionul Intelligencer, 28th
ult.) through a private channel, that Judge IIlisd,
one of our commissioners, had set out from Bue-
nes Ayres for Chili, (over land we presume)— op
course it was not his intention to return in the
Congress, if she left Hio de la Plata as early as the
lat of May, at which time it was espccted site
would sail.

Washington county, by the rev Nicholas Talley.

Died, on the ?6ili ultimo, in MTntosli county,
of a pulmonary complaint, after a painful and lin
gering illness of many months, Mrs AticiaBaiv

tions with patient resignation to the. trill at- Hea
ven. In recording tlie dea'hof the deceased, and
recounting a part of the many satiable traits in her
clt trafter, it it not intended te throw a veil over
the frailties of human nature, and say she was ex-
eropt from a participation of the common lot of
humanity—hut, in justice to her memory, it can
truly be said, her many amiable qualities cast a
deep shade over the Irivisl fiailtiex of nature, and
they were lost in tfce bet evidence of Iter deport,
