THE DARIEN GAZETTE.
Seated at the estuary of a mighty river, which,
dividing, about ouc hundred and twenty miles
above, into two edacious streams, affords icady
convtj ance frr the commodities of extensive 're
gions, Darien must flourish in proportion as the
agriculture of tbe interior shall inenase. But at.
few years ago, that inland country was a wilder
ness, and Darien bad scarcely the appearance or
a village; the forest having since been partially re
claimed, it now presents the cheering aspect pf •
a thriving town. Tiie obstacles to Its further
S rowth, are such as require no very strenuous en*
eavors to overcome their^ Ths roads commu
nicating with the interior being almost impassable
for waggons, the farmers in general prefer a ssftt
though longer way to bring Their staples, to the
tcacoast. A passage for vtiiiele*, drawn by
horses, might be completed in a abort time, with
out incurring heavy expenditure. With such m
facility, and a bar allowing easy ingress and egress
to vessels of considerable tonnage, there will be
nothing, it is presumed, sufficiently enticing its
the old route to divert the trade with the back- V ’
country longer from its natural diannel. The
genius of the age, however, renders such an ex
pedient almost superfluous. Steam-boats being
about to be employed on the Afalamaha and Its
two parent-streams, the Oconee and Oakmulgee,
up-country produce will, in future, reach its pro
per mart at less than one half the expense aaa in
one fourth of the time incident to land transporta
tion. These conveniences once in operation,
Darien must rapidly increase in importance, am)
yield, at no distant day, in trade and in riches, to
few sea-ports in the southern states.
The utility of gazettes iu commercial pbosm and
indeed every where—to circulate and record the
ercnls of Use times, to facilitate the views of the
merchant as well as to instruct and amuse tbe
politiei .n—is too well understood and generally
admitted, to require illustration. Darien is alrea
dy opulent enough, and, with the adjacent -coun
try, contains a sufficient number of inhahitantsto
support a printing establishment on a small scale;
and the undersigned, expecting to further their
own interests, as well as to comply with tbe with
es of their friends, intend to commence the pub*
lication of a weekly newspaper in that town, about
the beginning of October next.
Its columns, as far as they .xriU admit, shall cone
tain intell'Ktace, political and commercial, agri
cultural and statistical, miscellanecua and Whatso
ever shall be conducivetb tbe weBare of the ris
ing community. Its political aspect will ba of the
kind usually denominated REPUBLICAN. The
editorial exertions shall tend to support the ad
ministration so long a* tbe policy which has resist
ed the aggression* of foreign powers, conserved
tbe rights of tbe country, and raised toe national
character in toe eyes of the world, is pursued—
and no longer. This determination will not, how
ever, induce the publishers to exclude the produc
tions of persons who ir-ay differ with them on po
litical point*.' Temperate and reasonable estays,
In short whatever tends to elic’ito truth and expose
opprcSMOni(excepting theological controversies)
shall, without an> regard to the writer’s creed, be
admitted. The press shat be fret.
TERMS.

dollars per annum, payable in advance.
Advertisements of one square or less will be
