We hardly dare trust curselvts to apeak the
merits of .his exquisite toy, lest we should be
thought to have permitted our enthusiasm to
have blinded our sober judgments. The public
will suon find, however, that it is impossible to
use any descriptive language of its beauties,
which can deserve the epithet of hiperbolical ”
••The pleasing effect of the Kaleidoscope ar

dual beauty, by their arrangement in hexagonal,
pentagonal, or uiher forms, acquire a most inter

be regarded as infinite, as it is probable the iden-

present itself to the eye a second time. When

PROSPECTUS
For publishing, in, the Town of L'arith,
a weekly Newspaper,
ff ** extitleb
THE DARIEN GAZETTE. *,
Seated at the estuary of x mighty river, which,
dividing, about one hundred and twenty miles
above, into two capacious streams, affords ready
convey.—e for the commodities of extensive re-
gions,\ -arien must flourish in proportion as ihe
agriculture of the interior shall increase. Blit a "
few years ago, that inland country , Was a wilder
ness. and Darien had scarcely the appearance «f
a village-: tlie forest having since Veen pa. dally re
claimed, it now presents tbeTheering aspect of
a thriving town. Tlie rbitaclts toy.its further
growth, are sucli as require ho very strenilous en
deavors to ptercome (hem. The roads commu
nicating willi tbe interior wing almost impassable ,
for waggons, the fanners in general prefer a safer
thopgli longer way to bring their staple's to the •
seacoast. A passage for vehicles, drawn by
horses, might be completed in a short time, with*
out incurring heavy expenditure. With such a
facility, and a bar allowing easy ingress and egress
to vessels of considerable tonnage, there will be
nothing, it is presumed, sufficiently enticing in
tlie old route to divert the trade with tlie back-
country longer from its natural channel. The
genius of the age, however, renders such an ex
pedient almost superfluous. Steam-boats being
about to be c inployed on the A latanisha and its
two parent-streams, the Oconee and Oakuiulgee,
up-country produce will, in future, reach its pro
per mart at less than one lijlt the expense and in V-
one fourth of the time incident to land transporta
tion. These conveniences once in operation,
Ikirien must rapidly increase in importance, and u.
yield, at no distant day, in trade and in richer to
few sea-ports in the southern stales.
The utility of gazettes in commercial places, and
indeed every where—to circulate and record the
events efthe times, tu facilitate the views of the
merchant as well as to instruct and amuse the
politici .n—is too well understood and generally
admitted, to require illustration. Darien is alrea
dy opulent enough, and. with the adjacent coun
try, contains a sufficient number of inhabitanuto
support a printing establishment on a small scale,
and the undersigned, expecting to further their
uwn interests, as well as to comply with the wish
es of tlieir friends, intend to commence the pub
lication of a weekly newspaper in that town, about
the beginning of October next.
Its columns, as far as they will admit, shall con
tain intelligence, polilical and commercial, agri
cultural and statistical, miscellaneous and whatso
ever shall be conducive to tbe welfare of the ris
ing community. Its political aspect will be of the
kind usually denominated REPUBLICAN. Tlie
editorial exertions shall tend to support the ad
ministration so long as the policy winch has mist
ed the aggressions of foreign powers, conserved
the rights of the country, and raised the national
character in the eves of the world, is pursued—
and no longer. This determination will not, how
ever, induce the publishers to exclude the produc
tions of persons who may differ with them on po
litical points. Temperate and reasonable essays,
in short whatever tends to elicite truth and expose
oppression (excepting theological controversies)
shall, without any regard to the writer’s creed, be
admitted. The press shall be free.
TERMS.
The Darien Gazette will be printed with new
type, on a royal sheet, and issued evary Monday
at noon. The price of subscription will be rivE
hollaks per annum, payable in advance.
Advertisements of one square or less will be
charged skvextt-five cents for the first inser
tion and THiiiTr-SEVEX and a halt cexts each suc
cessive time. Notices above that size will be
charged proportionably; and no advertisements
will be discontinued without orders to that effect
