tar* and relieving pain caused by cariom teeth.
Few discoveries in modern chemiatry proniM
more iuinortant results than that ofKreo«oti>,bf
Dr. Reichenbnch, oil eminent chemist of Blnu-
ko, in Monrovia. It is a highly rectified liquid
product, obtained IVom wood, nnd isnimlogoutto
charcoal in its antiseptic properties, hut far more
powerful os a corrective nnd preventive of de
my. Charcoal, notwithstanding its well known
cleansing properties, i* objectionable na a denti
frice, on account ofit* insolubility, nnd the risk
of minute pnrticle* remaining between the teeth
and producing injury. Kreosote, on the contn-
ry, cannot beliahle to this objection, nnd pones-
sea. to a much gronter extent, the antiseptic and
purifying properties of the former. The trials
which have been made with it. in this country
ond Europe have proved its efficacy.
It is strongly recommended by the Faculty ai
the heat preventive ngninst caries in teeth. To
sweeten the breath, rendered offensive by decay
ed teeth, the uso of tobacco, or other causes, and
to arrest decay itself, it stands pre-eminent.

Whitaker-streets, shall be bound, whenever re
quired by the City Council by resolution* to
place u good and sufficient pavement or sidewalk
of brick or flagstone, and ofthe dimensions spe
cified in the ninth section of this Ordinance, and
the said pavement shall be oftho level and height
tnnrked on the accompanying map of the several
elevations oftlra different streetsund squares, nnd
foe said pnvement shnfibo graded or staked down
by Uie City Surveyor, and in the manner und
upon lira terms prescribed in Uie foregoing sec
tion of this Ordinance, und notice of such resolu
tion shall be published in the city Gazettes for at
least two mnuihs, nnd n copy thereof be served
by the City Mnrehul on every owner nr lessee ns
ulbresaid, his-or her agent or attorney, within
twenty days after the same shall have been pass
ed ; and if any person shall refuse or neglect to
nlnca a pnvementor sidewalk extending the whole
length of bis or her lot within twelve months af
ter such a resolution has been published or serv
ed, it shall be the duty ofthe City Surveyor nnd
City Marshall aided with such unisons, bricklay
ers or workmen a* mny he necessary, to proceed
to have the same placed before the lot of eneii de
faulter, and in die manner prescribed by this or
dinance, nnd lie shall report the samo to Council
with the expense thereof, end Council shell forth
with direct the City Treasurer to issue his execu
tion against ihe owner or lessee ofsaid lot for the
amount afsuchexpensc, which shall be collected
