FRIDAY MORNING ...February 14. 1868
TO MT MOIHER,

HUUiTi
I woaW.that I were kneeling with thee bow,
Mother, dear mother' at thy evening prayer,
With lore'e not! holy light upon thy brow !
I would that I were kaaelieg with thee there,
A* pate ia heart u when I left thy hoaie,
With elaleee dreams, la the great world to roam!
Long year* hare fled away since then—long
years!
And much of toll and eaSering has boon mine;
Yet ha* lifc’s struggle wrung from me no tears,
Sara when, dear mother, I hare thought ol
thine—
Tears fur the wanderer in a distant lead,
With few to rheer or take him by the hand.
And thou tinea then art old ! yet is thy heart
All young and fresh as in the month of May !
For with the worldly thou hast played no part,
Content ia lowly life to hold thy way,
Where joyless eyes e'er turned to tbee in glad
ness,
And saddened hearts e’er bless thee in their sad
ness.
0, mother mine ! in tie still evening hour,
When the bright stars their wonted places
take
And pour mil^ radiance over field and Sower,
And sleeping stream, I know that thou dost
wake;
I hear thy voice! thy messengers of prayer,
In apirit-ttiarch float around me in the air!
I hear thy voice e’en now I its accents low
Come like a murmur to thy listening ears !
I see thee bending with an upraised brow,
I see thy elasp’d hands and thy trembling
tears!
Those trembling tears thine eyes' soft light
gleams through,
At gleams the starlight through the trembling
dew!
I hear and see thee ! as oft times ere now,
In my far boyhood, in my distant yonth,
In the first days when manhood flashed my
brow,
Thou taugh'st of Heaven, of virtue’s ways, of
truth,
And prayed’st that blessings on my head might
rain—
Mother, I come! kneel with thy child again !
