SLEEPING IN CHURCH.
"They would searsely believe him when ho
told them thet in Thurso sometime ego, he on
..no occasion aew eix hundred people asleep
in church.’'— Speech of Dr. Guthrie.
O'er their devoted heeds
When the lew thunder’d
Snugly end heedlessly,
Snored the six hundred.
Greet was the preacher's theme;
Screw'd on was ell the steam ;
Neither with shout nor scream
Could he disturb the dream
Os the six hundred.
Terrors to the right of them,
Terrors to tho left of them.
Terrors in front of them—
Hell itself plundered
Os its most awful things,
Weak minded preacher flings
At the dumb-founded,
Boldly he spoke and well;
All on deaf ears it fell;
Vein was his loudest yell
Volley'd and thunder'd
For caring—tho truth to tell—
Neither for heaven nor hell,
Snored the six hundred.
Still, with redoubled real,
Still he spoke onward,
And, in a wild appeal,
Striking, with hand and heel—
Making the pulpit reel,
Shakou and sundered —
Called them tho Churoh's foes,
Threatened with endless woes—
Faiutly the answor rose,
(Proofs of their sweet repose),
From the united nose
Os the six hundred.
Sermons of near an hour,
Too much for human power ;
Prayers, too, made to match,
(Extemporanoous batch),
Wofully blundered;
With a service of music
Fit to turn every pew sick—
Should it be wondered ?
Churches that will not move
Out of the ancient grove
Through which they have floundered,
If they will lag behind,
Still must expoct to find
Hearers of such a kind
As the six hundred.

Perry Davis' Pain Killer. —Wo have often
spoken of this great medicine in terms of very
high praise, and wo have as often felt that all wo
could say in its favor would not do it full justice.
It is one of thoso medicines of which we can
speak—and spoak decisively—from experience ;
for wc have repeatedly taken it, and invariably
with the best results and greatest satisfaction.
Wc always keep it on hand, ready for an emer
gency, and we regard it not only as ono of the
very host medicines in use for various ills, but
as one of tho choapost, also. Its cost, by the
way—that is, the cost of tho ingredients of which
it is composed—has bee - considerably increased,
bat the price of the medicine has been but very
little advanced. It is not likely that the popu
larity of Davis’ Pain Killer will in any measuro
decrease, or that the demand for it will in tho
slightest degree declino, until some other specific
for allaying pain and curing varions complaints
for which it is so generally used, shall be dis
covered, of equal potency with it—of which
there seems to be but little probability. Asa
remedy for stomach complaints, such as dysen
tery, diarrhoea, etc., the Pain Killer is, without
doubt, unsurpassed, and every ivhcro most de
servedly in demand. One, two, or three dosos,
of a teaspoonful oach, in a wine glass of milk
and water, with a little sugar, have ropeatcdly,
within our knowledge, effectually curod serious
trouble of this kind. Judgment should undoubt
edly he usod in cheeking certain stages of diar
rhoea too suddenly; but taken at the proper
time, the Pain Killer will aot like a charm, and
frequently cure when nothing else will.—Provi
