Veueral Onlem No. SO.
We omitted on yesterday to call attention
so Order No. 80, to be found in our columns.
At* the first glance, perhaps, tho reader will
say, “pooh, it only releases certain parties’’
—but we say read on, and not only read,
but carefully consider the 3d and 4th para
graphs. Some people who talk so glibly,
and boast so loudly about “who shall, or
who shall not live in this country,” had
bolter mind the'r stops. Vigilance Com
mittees mid self-constituted mentors have
played out —or it there arc any ot them lelt,
our advice to them is—beware! The mili
tary authorities i>iv determined to protect
every man in his rights of person and
properly —and tho power is ample by which
it can be done.
Tk« lilut'k Crook in Tlueoii.
Tho production of this spectacular drama
in Macon, last week, was the cause of con
siderable commotion among the pious
fraternity of the Journal a- Messenger,
which paper characterized the play as
abominable, and those who witnessed it
as wanting in self-respect. Notwithstand
ing, the “Crook” drew full houses, as it
docs everywhere. The last fling of the Mes
senger—in which the females of Templeton’s
troupe are wrongly charged—is thus truth
fully answered by the Telegraph, as wc
know from personal observation :
A contemporary states that on Saturday night
the company playing at, Balaton's Hall “acted
very disgracefully," etc. We were present at the
Hall that evening, aiul noticed there the wives aud
daughters of several of our citizens; and it is hul
justice to those ladies for as to say that there is an
error ill this opinion. Such ladies as witnessed
the performance throughout the evening, would
not have r-Aiaitied had the performance been of
an obscene and disgraceful character. As to the
charge of the dancers appearing in a state of almost
nudity, we must pronounce it an incorrect state
meat.”
The play alluded to is the “Seven Sisters,’<
full of mcrriirent, but nothing vulgar. It
ran for one week in Savannah, and was
patronized by many ladies of the highest
respectability. Tho Messenger will hardly
succeed in ruling tho people of Macon ns
regards their amusements.
“Oh, wad the power the giflie gie ns.
To see nursels as fillers see ns ;
It would fra mony a blunder free us.
Au’ foolish notion.”

Murder in t'olunibiu, near Thompson,
on the ltltli ilist.
We have heard rumors for several days
past of a murder committed in Columbia,
near the village of Thompson, hut preferred
awaiting the facts before giving the case to
the public. It appears that two colored
met—brothers residing in Warren county—
had purchased a cow in Columbia county,
and paid for her and taken her home. The
names of these men were Ruditk Durdin and
Tlionia Durdin. On the 16th inst., lour
white men—one of them claiming the cow—
named respectively Win. Dennis, Lockeit
bills and Young, repaired to the house of
these colored men and took violent posses-
sion of the cow, driving her before them to
Mr. Jameß R, Wilson’s house, on tho public
road, followed by the two colored men—
Rudick and Thomas Durdin—the owners
of the cow—and offering to produce the
evidence of the fact. These negroes were
set upon. Rudick was killed by a blow
from William Dennis, and Thomas’ skull
broken hy some one, which has siiiqo
resulted in his death.
A corouer’s jury (so-called) wan sum
moned, end after silting upon the case,
returned a verdict : ‘‘That the. deceased
came to his death by a blow inflicted hy
William Dennis”—who has fled to parts
unknown ; and the others, Lockett. Sills, and
Young, were exculpated as being neither
aiders nor abettors of the foul murder.
How the jury catne to this conclusion, we
cannot at this stand-point conceive. These
men, L., S., and Y., were present ; they
certainly could have restrained the murder,
if they so determined, and we are sure that
other evidence must ho produced that will
relieve our mind of the judgment we pro
nounce, which is, that if Dennis is a mur
derer, then Lockett, Sills, and Young, tire’
in the eye of tho law, parliceps criminis,
and equally liable to punishment. We hope
a thorough military sifting of this matter
will he had. and that while we hear so much
prating about justice and the majesty of
the law, that a thorough work in this case
will be performed by tho military, as tve
know they are determined to do.

A fire occurred on the Southwest corner
of Bay and Whitaker streets, Savannah,
early yesterday morning, occupied by Mr.
11. J. McDonald on the first floor, and Mr.
E. J. Purse’s printing office on the second
floor. The entire contents of the first and
second stories were destroyed. We regret
to leant that in addition to the loss sustained
by our friend Poise in the complete destruc
tion of his material, there is the additional
irreparable damage caused by the loss of
valuable manuscripts, among which is the
original records of the recent Convention of
the Episcopal Church, scot there to be
printed.

A few days ago nearly two acres of land,

These sinks occur occasionally, but this is

On this Anniversary of the birthday of
the model Queen of Great Britain, we lako
occasion to recsll the plesaant reminiscences
of the past, with the dates of the most
important events of her life, as a tribute due
to her as a model wife and mother, os well
as a Christian Queen, of whom naught can
bo said other than that sho has filled all
the spheres of life in which she has taken
part, in such manner ns commands tho
respect and admiration of the world.
The Queen was born on the 24th day of
May, 1819, aud enters her fiftieth year this
day. On the 20th day of Juue, 1837, ot
the early age of eighteen, she was crowned
Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, amidst
the most gorgeous display of the surround
ings of Royalty ever known to the world,
mid attended by the nobility and gentry of
the country, with tho Privy Council in
large array—of the number of whom, sixty
five have since paid tho debt of nature.
Queen Victoria was united in marriage
with Prince Albert (a first cousin), of Saxe-
Coburg Gotha, on the 10th day ol February
1840—twenty eight years ago last February,
Her marriage was a happy and genial one.
The olive branches that have surrounded
her table have numbered eight—the names
and birthdays of whom are ns follows :
1. Albert Kilward, Prince of Wale*, Nov. !*,
1841—27 years.
2. Princess Alice Maud Alary, April 25, 1843
23 years.
3. Prince Alfred Krncst Albort, August 6, 1844
21 years.
4. Princess Helena Augusta Victoria—May 23,
1848—22 years.
3. Princess Louisa Carolina Alberta, March IS,
1848— 20 years.
6. Prince Arthur William Patrick Albert, May
1, 1850—18 years.
7. l'riuco Leopold Goorgo Duncan Albert, April
7, 1853—15 years.
5. Princess Beatrice Mary Victoria Foodorc,
April It, 1857—1 t years.
The sad loss to the Queen of her consort)
Prince Albert, has borne heavily upon
her heart, and possibly has embittered
her days. The marriage of her child
ren has been happy, and her eldest daugh
ter, Princess of Prussia, has six children
to gladden the grandmother’s heart, and
relieve somewhat her sorrows.

The Kanawha Republican i* responsible
for the following : ‘‘Abner Fields, of Howard
township, in Washington county, had a cow
which was delivered of twenty eight calves
in one day. The two largest are about the
size of ordinary twin calves, the next largest
about one half size, and the remaining
twenty five about the size of an ordinary
rat. They are all dead, mother included,
except the two largest, which are doing well.
We had the statement above given from
Mr. Fields himself, and from several neigh
bors of his who witnessed the sight, and
who arc as fully entitled to belief as any
persons in the world.”
