Runaway Team ■‘.id Severe Accident.
A cotton team, after crossing the bridge
on Saturday afternoon, started off on a race
up Centre street. An ole. man along with
the team caught hold of C«e leaders and
tried to slop them, but he was thrown down
and the horses ran over him, the
rear fore and hind wheels, pas»iug over
both of his legs. Strange to say, i>, bones
were broken, and no other hurts, except the
braises where the wheels passed over his
legs. He was taken to the toll house and
weired due attention. The team rah

An examination of this case at Military

parties have been sent to Savannah, snys
the Sun of the 24th inst. :
Besides Mr. Robert Daniel, and Mr.

Latest Style of Piiniv.
Stripes down the sides of the pantaloons
is quite fashionable at this present writing.
Every man to his taste, say wo* even if
“stripes” are put on penitentiary convicts as
a mark. In the naval and military regula
tions, stripes or military cord, etc., are
rightly put on officer’s uniforms—it is neces
sarv; but in civil life, stripes down the legs
of pantaloons are out of place, and are
aping what we conceive to he a style not in
the range of civil life.
Name Your Streets.
Why not have the names of all the streets
legibly and conspicuously painted at each
corner, and the houses in each street
regularly numbered, odd on one side, even
on the other, as in every other city of any
consequence ?
If the city is not in a position to pay for
it, make it compulsory upon each landlord.

expenses.

The other day a Democratic colored man
stepped into the store of a brother in the
same “cause” (white), and called for five
pounds of bacon. The polite store keeper
was about complying with the order, when
the aforesaid darkey informed him that he
was unable to pay for it to day, but would
call in morrow. “Well,” says the grocery
man, “we don't do business in that manner,
our terms are cash.” But, says the freedman,
“I voted a Conservative ticket”—“can't help
that,” replied the latter, “the Conservatives
don’t give me meat," etc. The unfortunate
darkey was dumb founded at the idea of
his promised sustainer to treat him thus.
Ho went to his home that evening, we are
under the impression, wiser than when ho
left. It served him just right.
A Fact.
A cow’s stomacii of one recently butch
ered at Indianapolis contained a small hard
ware store or junk shop, as follows, to wit:
100 nails of assorted sizes; screws, iron
nuts, and scrap iron ; and notwithstanding
this, tbe cow thrived, was exceedingly fat,
and paid handsomely her owner.
Query.—ls such diet to he commended to
all cow keepers? If so, is there anything a
cow can not take into her stomach? We
know the sulphate of iron is good lor all
animals, whether on lour- or two legs, and
rids (lie corporeal system of animals from
many deleterious parasites, and the gastric
juice may have converted these foreign iron
substances into this form of iron. If so, all
right; and hence tlic milk in tlio cocoanut.

To show onr readers what can be done by
care and judicious breeding—we give them
the following account of a yearling calf
reared and butchered at one years old, by
Mr. Hawk of Hope, Warren county New
Jersey—its live weight was 1,120 pounds;
its dressed weight 708 pounds ; rough tallow
40 pounds ; and hide 105 pounds 1! What
do you think of it reader ? Havant you seen
in Georgia often, a five year old that
wouldn’t come within a gun shot of these
figures after an elaborate and expensive
stall feeding ? llow many yearling Georgia
calves would it take to make an approach to
this weight, of one alone ? A cow pen full,
and a large cow pen at that, is our opinion
and experience.
