Gelt. Washington, at a village gathering
in Virginia, once jumped “twenty two feet

was a village maiden, whose lather was a

the young man who should excel at this

Every effort is being made by the Ku-
Klux Democracy, and all sorts of plans arc
being discussed by the “big Indians” and
the “big blowers,” and the "small fryers,”
to carry Georgia at tbe Fall elections. Even
the great Ilatnilear -the nnpardoned has
been heard to say that the 12,000 majority
of the Fifth District is very easily to be
overcome—a mere matter of moonshine !
The question for the Republican party to
ask itself is, can it be done? Wo cannot
think so, even with thousands of dollars and
rivers of whiskey ; but vve have to be wary,
and not weary well doing. This i; a
huge majority—it is the largest given in the
State at the last election—a ml in fact tbe
Fifth Congressional District of Georgia has
the right to claim to b - Ihe Banner District.
Let us then try to increase the majority.
It, can be done—it must be done ! Work
with a will, and it will bo done.
Errvin-oiiv,
An impression prevails very gem rally that
Congress has passed an act extending the
operation of what is known as “-the fifty cent
clause” of the Bankrupt Act, to the Ist of
January, 1809. This is an error, however,
which may lead roauy into very fatal delay.
The Judiciary Committee have never re
ported the bill, and the Tribune has reason
to believe will not report it- All petitions,
therefore, under which the bankrupts are
unable to show assets to tbe amount of lifty
cents on the dollar, must be tiled during the
present week or not at all.
“Kcmoval ot City Officers.”
Under the above heading the Columbus
Enquirer deprecates the" removal, recently
made by General Meade, of the Mayor and
Council of the city of Columbus, and
amongst other expressed hopes, says: “Wo
hope, too, that the new Council, however
biassed hy bitter party feeling, will at least
not imitate the Radical Government set up
by military authority iu Augusta, iu its
plunder of the citizens to provide largely
increased salaries for the officers and fat
jobs for favorite partisans.
Now, the Enquirer's ox being gored so
badly, wc do not wonder that a fling should
1)0 made, in the same sentence, at our
efficient city government, although there has
not been ol late years one so indisputably
economical. We presume, too, that the
new Mayor and Council of Columbus will
take care of the welfare of the city, and at
least see that the right kind of policemen
are put on the service, so that no more mid
night assassinations will occur, or other
crimes and misdemeanors be committed,
which the records, no doubt, show lor thirty
years past has been a peculiar institution
of that handsome city by tbe Clialtahochoc.

The following questions are asked in the

Does the new Constitution forbid llie
vending of lottery tickets ? If so, why does
the Genoral Commanding this Department
permit the Georgia .Statu Lottery (so-called)
to practice upon the credulity ol tho ignorant
any longer? Will yon ask him ?
The News <(• Herald says :
The above is from one of our oldest and
most respected citizens, and deserves the
attention of the authorities.
It then goes on to say “that tho concern is
utterly repudiated by tho Masonic Frater
nity,” while it claims to he for the benefit of
the “Masonic Orphans’ Homey’ to be located
no one knows where.
Ihe office in this city (Augusta) is, oil
every afternoon, the gathering place of the
ignorant classes of society, who are losing
not only their money but their time, nnd are
learning gambling habits detrimental in tbe
highest degree. Masons utterly repudiate
the concern, believing it to be a nuisance
that should he suppressed. It, is very true,
this humbug concern claims to have a
charter from the I .eginlaUire of Georgia, and
has the semblance of the right of charter
privileges; hut we question their right to
proceed when their main object, after two
years’ working, has not been made visible.

On Monday niglit last, Dr. Harrison pre
faced his lecture with the following, which,
says the Griffin Herald, wo give ns near as
we can remember:
When Gen. D. H. Hill was in Atlanta, 1
was very anxious to see and hear him. As
it was quite late before I could get to the
hall, I felt great anxiety about getting a
seat. The streets seemed deserted. Imagine
my surprise when reaching the hall I saw
only about twenty five persons. A young
man volunteered to “drum up” an audieucc,
and managed to get about twenty five
mure. ******
Gen. Hill told some things which were
new to mo : That the sewing machine was
invented in the State of Georgia, the rifled
cannon which did us so much harm in the
the late war, was invented in Alabama, and
that the cotton gin was a Southern invention.
Another fact the General gave us was very
painful to hear : An agent of a Northern
newspaper hud, within the city limits of
Atlanta, secured three hundred and ten
subscribers, within two weeks’ time.
The Dr. added, and wc suspect truthfully*
1 f the same material, the same paper, and
the same editors—everything the same—
was published in Richmond, Raleigh,
Charleston, Savannah, or any place South
of Mason and Dixon’s line, ho would not
have received thirty.
It is a humiliating fact that the Southern
people do not patronize Southern enterprises
as they ought to do.

Is the cheapest :tnd best family medicine
in the world. The moment it is used, pain
ceases. It cures rheumatism, neuralgia,
bilious cholic, and inflammation of the kid*
ncys, almost instantly. If seized with sudden
colds, coughs, influenza, diptheria, hoarse
ness, sore throat, chills, fever and ague,
mercurial pains, scarlet fever, etc., etc.,
take from four to six of Railway’s Fills, and
also take a teaspoonful of the Ready Relief
in a glass of warm water, sweetened with
sugar or honey ; bathe the throat, head and
chest with Ready Relief, (if ague or inter
mittent fever, bathe the spine also), in the
morning you will he cured.
How the Relief acts.—ln a few minutes
the patient will feel a.slight tinging irrita
tion, and the skin becomes reddened ; if
there is much distress in the stomach, the
Relief will assist nature in removing the
offending cause—a general warmth is felt
throughout the entire body, and its diffusive
stimulating properties rapidly courses
through every vein and tissue of the system,
arousing the slothful and partially paraly
zed glands and organs to renewed and
healthy action ; perspiration follows, and
the body feels increased heat. The sickness
at stomach, colds, chills, headache, oppress
ed breathing, the soreness of the throat, and
all pains, either internally or externally,
rapidly subside, and the patient falls into a
tranquil sleep, awakes refreshed, invigor
ated, cured.
Tt will be found that in using the Relief
externally, either on the spine or across
the kidneys, or over the stomach and bowels,
that for several days after a pleasing
warmth will be felt, showing the length of
time it continues its influence over the
diseased parts.

In thus early releasing these prisoners, the

These misguided and thoughtless young men
were convicted, after a fair trial, of acts of vio

Tho frequent complaints of similar conduct,
and tho failure of the civil authorities to repress
the evil, rendered it necessary to exercise the
