ahooting Affair In Burke,
Wo have received from our correspondent
at Waynesboro, the following particulars of
a shooting aflair which occurred some twelve
miles below that place on Tuesday last, the
9th instant:
It seems that a young man by the namo of
Bowers was travelling through tbs country with
a horse and buggy. Its stopped at a store kept by
Mr. Dauisls, and mado use of the remark that
ho could beat any man in tho house for drinks.
A man by tho namo of WUltatn Had said he
would play with him. They played, and Bowes
won tha drinks. Afterward thoy counuonecd
playing for money, and Bowora boat him out of
*340 in cash and his saddle pony. After this
they quit. Bowers treated, and Red got pretty
drunk. Ho told Bowers that he had cheated
him out of his money. Itowera told him he was
a damned liar. Red immediately drew his pistol
and Bowers knocked him down with a stick ; he
rose, however, and shot Bowers in tho right
side. Bowers exclaimed, “Hive mo a knife.” One
was banded to him, when ho cut Red in two
places. Tho wound of Bowers will prove mortal;
it was the opinion of our correspondent he could
not survive tuorti than forty eight hoars.—
Chronicle and Sentinel,
We find the above! in the Chronicle it
Sentinel. The editor lias been badly
“sold,” us there is not a word of truth in
the entire article.
From one of a party of our citizens
who were on a fishing excursion at Han
cock's Landing, on Tuesday afternoon, we
learn the following facts:
The gentlemen from this city were
approaching an unoccupied storehouse
belonging to Air. Wm. Red, when their
attention was called to a fine looking
horse attached to a buggy, and which one
of tlie party immediately recognised as
the property of Mr. S. E. Bowers, of
Hamburg, recently stolen from him by Itis
own son. a youth about nineteen years
old, who was holding the reins. Presently
a lad named Alatheney came upon the
scene, when Air. Red stated that the
youngsters had been in tlie vicinity of the
landing all day, trying to negotiate a loan,
by offering the horse and buggy as col
lateral security, in time to take the boat
for Savannah. By this time the boat had
left the wharf, and one of the Augusta
party told Mr. Red what he knew of the
horse and buggy, and proposed that Mr.
Red should take the same back to Alt-
Bowers’ house in Hamburg. He consented,
anti was furnished with a note to Chief
Dillon. He gave the youths a ride in the
buggy as far as Air. Daniel’s store, where
he left them—young Bowers pawning his
valise for money sufficient to pay his
railway fare to Waynesboro— and that is
the last Mr. Red saw of him. The latter
entne on to Hamburg, and delivered the
horse and buggy to Airs. Bowers, Iter
husband having gone in the direction of
Atlanta to look for his runaway son and
property. Air. Red was in our city on
Wednesday, and returned home on Thurs
day, where our Augusta party spent the
day with him.
He will probably be somewhat surprised
when he reads the veracious account from
the Chronicle's Waynesboro’ correspondent.
We will add that Mr. Red, so far from
indulging in gaming, is a worthy member
of the Church, an upright citizen, and a
large landholder.
