TO BA COO.
\ ( ,w perhaps, some confirmed lover of
the '‘weed'’ will elevate his lordly brow and
indcr what we have to say about his
Jr“rite- a nd he fortifies himself with a
•«sh eiear, his way of saying ho “don’t
.„re a snap" Or if he happens to be of
ill-natured turn of mind, he may grum
ble out something about "motes’' and
■beams," “women always harping about
men’s faults” (poor souls), “don’t know that
it hurts them any if men do use tobacco,"
etc Now, it makes no difference to us who
rou happen to be—a “retired merchant,” a
millionaire in a “coach and four,” an ex-
Congressman, or an “ex” anybody else, we
beg leave to differ from you. Nay, we do
differ from you, sir, plainly and pointedly,
without your permission, and not merely
for the sake of controversy, hut with good
reasons. Why, we are the very half of
humanity who suffer from your disgusting
tobacco chewing! Do you know that you
tre {i-c terror of every neat housekeeper,
as well as of every feminine nose of refined
sensibilities? Did it ever occur to you
that your most valued lady friend feels
glad,"sometimes, when you take yourself
and your tobacco together out of her front
door? And havo you any idea how many
household blessings are sent after your
retreating footsteps, and how many times
in an imaginary way your filthy habit is
scrubbed out of you under her skillful
brush, and its very back bone snapped up,
twisted around, and squeezed out of you
through her relentless mop? As much as
she may value your friendship, believe tne,
she despises your pernicious habit.
We have often watched with an amused
kind of pity an inveterate tobacco chcwer
who has entered a neatly furnished room.
How sheepishly he looks about for a
spittoon, a scat by an open window, or a
convenient corner by the hearth, to empty
hre mouth of its disgusting contents I And
it never fails to remind us of the way little
boys look when they are caught in a
neighbor’s hen roost. Os course wc speak
to an intelligent public through the Join ml,
so we will not address any remarks to the
ignorant or besotted wretch, in broadcloth
or rags, who never discriminates between
a Brussels carpet or a barroom floor, a
lady’s dress and the pavement; whose very
skin and clothes seem to be saturated with
tobacco odor, whose very perspiration seems
to be distilled tobacco juice, who makes a
match safe of his vest pocket, and a stove
pipe or a mortar of the mouth God gave
him fur a better purpose. We arc not
writing these things at random, merely for
the reader's amusement or disgust, as the
case may be, but because they are facts,
and show the deplorable effects of this
beastly habit. My dear young lady, you
do not know but that your perfumed
Leander, in patent leathers and lavender
kids, who smokes his fragrant Havana so
daintily and drinks your precious health so
gracefully among his boon companions, may
one day personate this fearful picture ! We
can offer you no assurance to the contrary,
for what has happened a thousand times
may happen again. The “honeymoon”
may hardly get to he an old song when
those marvelous preparations for “purifying
and sweetening” the breath, so indispen
sable to the lover, will he considered a
superfluous item in the domestic catalogue,
and what you at first thought to be only a
harmless pleasure will, after a while, become
a source of perpetual annoyance in your
household, and a “skeleton in your cup
board.” 1
Much has been said and written upon this
subject, hut it is not “threadbare” yet, and
never will be so long as tobacco grows. Be
sides, we have a kind of individual right to
speak of it, for among our very earliest “ad
ventures” comes the dropping of a great coal
mto our baby bosom from the paternal
meerschaum,” balanced above our little
brown, curly head, resting in fancied security
sgainst the paternal vest pattern. Wc might
he cheated into the belief that it was only
an ugly dream, but the scar remains to “tell
the tale!”
We would say a few words to our boys, our
uear young boys, who are to bo our men
80me “ a y’ a, ‘d the husbands, fathers, and
grandfathers of future generations ; but more
particularly would we address those who
expect to depend upon Iheir own exertions
or support, and with their own strong right
arms and brave hearts, carve out a name and
, a mark.” Just as soon as you begin
eel that life to you is no holiday, and that
mere is something for you to do, then you
re beginning to individualize yourself, to
rm your habits, and to make of vourself
what you will be in ail your after-life; Then

ROBBING GOVKIINMKNT IN OLD
TIMES.
A professional f'ricud, while hunting up
some authorities recently, fell upon the case
of the Duchess of Marlborough rs. Sir John
Vanburgh, tried in the reign of George 1.,
wherein the Duchess, as executrix of her
husband, demanded an account ot monies
expended in building Blenheim house, the
famous casliu presented by the British
Empire to the Duke (or his eminent military
services. The report of the case shows that
they used to carry on Government jobs in
those days pretty much as they do now,
except that, us becomes our advanced era,
wo have rather outstripped them in roguery.
Tart of the work on Blenheim was done
by the Government, and part by the Duke ;
and the case shows that he carried it on
twenty per cent, cheaper than the Govern
ment did, thus proving that then, ns now,
contractors spent the money of the public a
good deal more liberally than they did their
own. It also turned out that the Crown
had paid high prices for expensive mate
rials which never went into the build
ing at all ; that those who perpetrated
these frauds were Government officials;
that among other cheats they furnished
a large amount of half bricks which
they charged at about double the num
ber of whole bricks, thus defrauding
treasury at both ends in a style worthy of
a contractor of the Eric canal, or the
Federal Capitol; that when the superin
tendents of the work wanted refreshments
for the inner man, they purchased them
and then charged them as candles used
while finishing the interior of the castle, a
dodge as ingenious as that of our Congress
men, who buy lace, scarfs, and kid gloves
for their wives and daughters, ami call
them stationery.
It appeared in evidence that Sir Christo
pher Wren, who planned St. Paul’s Cathe
dral, received only £2OO per annum for
overseeing the erection of that building.
Sir Christopher was the most distinguished
architect in Europe, and St. Paul’s the
most elaborate and costly edifice erected in
England for two centuries; and yet he
superintended its erection for SI,OOO a
year, while it takes three or four inspectors,
at an annual salary of $5,000 each, to
oversee the building of our new Court
House ; which raises the presumption that
Wren performed his duties in a very shabby
manner, and was paid accordingly, while
our superintendents execute their difficult
tasks with due deliberation and in a most
extraordinary style, a munificent public,
mindful of their invaluable services, seem
ing totally regardless of the lapse of time
or the cost of the job.— N. Y. Sun.
[From tho New York Sun,
A GRAND ENTERPRISE.
The recent organization of the New York
and Brooklyn Tunnel Company, for the pur
pose of establishing an underground com
munication between this city and Brooklyn,
calls to mind a much grander scheme of the
same sort now being seriously discussed in
England—that of a tunnel from England to
France, under the English Channel- This
great work will lie twenty miles in length,
extending from a point on the English const,
near Dover, to one in France, mar Calais.
Borings have been made at both ends lo a
depth sufficient to show that the bed of the
channel is, in all probability, like the cliffs
on either side, of solid chalk. If the indi
cations thus obtained can be relied on, the
mere excavation of the tunnel will he com
paratively easy. The London limes esti
mates, indeed, the entire cost of it at
£10,000,000, say $70,000,000, or only about
twice the expenses of the Abyssinian war.
The great danger will be that a break, or
split, may he found in the chalk bed, through
which the water might leak in faster than
ordinary pumping could take il out, and thus
involve great expense in the shape of coffer
dams and similar appliances. Nor is i! quite
certain that a tunnel of this immense length
could be successfully ventilated, or that pas
sengers would prefer its subterranean dis
comforts lo tlio-e of a steamboat. All these
points have yet to lie, and undoubtedly will
be, well considered before the execution of
the scheme is fairly taken in hand ; but that
it should have been broached and discussed
in the way that if has been, is another proof
of the far-reaching ambition of modern
engineering, and the contempt of modern
enterprise for what would once have been
thought difficulties too great to lie even grap
pled with.
