Last nite after 1 hed addressed a Chase
meetin in Garrettstown in the afternoon,
and one at the Corners in thb evening; I
retired to my virehus couch full of my sub*
jick, and whisky. Its ruther tryin for a
man at my time uv life to do these tilings.
To say nothing uv liftin up my voice like
one crying in the wilderness for an old line
Abolishinist, the terrible uncertainty as to
whether I ought to holler, “hkel Kites—
Suffrage for all V or “Amenky lor white
men,” troubles me. Likewise does the
doubt ex to whether? ought to make speeches
in favor uv payin the debt in Greenbax, a
la Pendleton, or in Gold, a la Seymour, or
a repudiatin the debt altogether like,Pome
roy, is a incubus wich weighs onto me, and
paralyzes my best efforts. For instants, at
both meetins I wuz compelled to talk uv
tariffs and sich, uv wich our people know
jest about ex much ez the gentle hog doos
uv Hebrew. ’ Wood, oh wood, the nomina
shens wuz made and the platform adopted,
that I might go instructing our people from
a proper standpint. Tired out and disgust
ed, I retired early, and slept a troubled
sleep. 0, sich a nite! 1 dreemed most
horrible dreems, the following being a feeble
statement uv the lightest nv them :
In my dreem I was in a country tho like
uv wich I never seed afore. There wux a
low, level place, a sort uv a pit indeed, and
not a pit either, so much ez it wuz a swamp
or bog, with only here and there a dry spot.
It wtrz not ex cheerful a lookiu.place ex yoo
cood think uv. •It wuz full of skulls and
dead men’s bones. The highways leadih into
it were slushy and nasty, and an odor ez uv
seven hundred thousand million dead cuts
constantly assended to vex the pure air
above. It wuz inhabited, it wuz. lloilin
about in the corrupshun, I saw the face uv
every Democrat I bad ever, seen, and. they
wuz all about their yoosual avoeatidps, too.
Ben. Wood wuz a sellin lottery tickets.
Fernandy hed his hand into a city treasury.
A. Johnson wuz a signin a pyrdon fer a
counterfeiter (another counterfeiter, who
wanted the skill uv the iukarserated one,
wuz a waitin to carry it Co him.) Au im
mense concourse uv John Morrissey’s con
stitooents were organizing a raid onto giagar
orfan asylums, aud another immense mass
wuz a burnisliin weapons ez if for another
conflick with suthin. Rite back uv this place
wuz a precipice risen up almost jierpendicular
many feet, on the top uv wich stretched
away a most beautiful prospcck. 1 asked one
who was crawlin out uv the place what it all
meant, and he replied it wae the restin place
uv the Democrisy.
“Look! sed he, “about yoo. Seest you
that elevated bieezy plain? That’s the
chosen home of Republikenism up there, and
I’m goiu for it.”
"Bnt stay 1” sed I, “I fain wood know
more. Who’s that V’ I askt, ez a body come
shootin down the abyss, boundiu plum into a
most friteful mass uv corrupsben below.
‘•That’s Ross, uv Kansas,” sod he. ‘-Look
out here comes Henderson, too, and Fowler.
Ha 1 ha!” laffed this escapin one, ex he saw
Ross aud Heuderson scramble out of the
dirt, with it stiekiu to ein, aud try to crawl
up the side uv the precipice, that I reely
trembled for em, but they had strong hands
a holdin uv em back.
. "Yoo uolis that there is one way uv com
municashen between the two places,” sed he,
"which is legilimit. Yoo observe that
ladder?" . •
“I dedn’t, but I do now. My eyes is
dim”sed I, “wat is them ihskripshens on the
rounds?”
“They are inscribed as follows:
No. I—(The highest) “Conservatisii.”
No. 2—“Constitooshenel Doubts.”
No. 3*-“Boutheru Rites.” ■ •
No. 4—“Grecubax.”
No. s—“Repudiasheu.”
No. B—“Ameriky for white mm.”
No. 7—“Afrikm Slavery.”
3,“Y00 will observe the last one is partly
under the slush which kiver.i the bottom uv
the plain. Its a trifle lower than the original
level. But look! there's suthin a goiu up
there! Seel”
Trooly, there wuz suthin a goin on.
Cheef Justice Chase appeared at the head
uv the stairs on the very brink uv the
preerpt.ee. Pellerin him and entreatin uv
him to stay, wuz Theodore Tilton, Horace
Greeley, and rnor’n a million uv others,
white and black, who wuz a holdin up
their hands in horror at the way his
face wuz turned. The Cheef Justice wuz
assurin uv em it wuz all rite, that be
shood probably go down to the first round,
wich wuz “Conservatism,” as he considered
it safer ground. Theodore grabbed him
by yne shoulder, to restrane him, but
Salmon shoved him off roodly, and put his
foot dn the first round.
I looked closer and saw it all at a glance.
August Belmont hed climbed up so ez to
be in site of any one standin on that round,
and wuz wavin a flag at him onto wich wuz
inscribed “nominashen.” 8. P. hed his
venerable eyes fixed onto that, and didn’t
see nothin else, a kind uv parallel blind-,
ness wich has roeined quite a many public
•men. “Don’t go to em,” eried Theodore
and Horris. “I won’t,” returned the cheer
ful old innocent. “I’ll bring em up to me.”
Infooriated with the site uv that nag wieh
Belmont kept artfully movin afore him, he
quickly dropt onto the second step, and the
next, each step being longer than the one
precedin it By thistime the attenshun uv
the Democrisy below wuz attracted toward
the spectacle, and they cheered lustily, not
so much at the prospeck nv gettin the
eminent Judge, ez at the sorrer and
chagrin depicted onto the faces uv Greeley,
Tilton, el aL, at the top.
Down be went amid the plaudeU uv the
Democrisy, who, by this time, was all hur
rahin’ for him, step by step, till he come to
the last one. “Come!” sed Boregard, Forest,
Fernandy Wood and Vallaudygum, “cornel
One step more—one little tiny step, audits
ovar. Come, loye, came!"
“No I” sed he, tremblin like a man with
tlic ager: "I can’t go that step, I can’t;
indeed I can't. Come up to me-—yoit

and the strongest uv yoo, aiol lift the eon
cetii out uy the ihi're, Ityd up to, the CJtcet
Justis. Take hob! close. Now, altogether,
with a will.”
They tugged and tugged, but to no purpose.
Pendleton, Hendrieky, and a score uv others,
who didn't like the - Chase biznis, hed slipped
down to the bottom, and wuz a pullin back,

Ths National Un>ublle»ti party of the United States,
assembled in National Convention, in the city of Chi
cago, oh the ‘»th day of May, 1866, make the following
Declaration of Principles :
Ist. We congratulate the country on the assured suc
cess of the reconstruction policy of Congress; a’
evinced by the adoption, in a majority of the States
lately in rebellion, of Constitutionssecuring equal civil
and political rights to all, and Regard it as the duty of
the Government to sustain those institutions, and to
prevent the people of such Suites from being remitted
to a state of anarchy.
Sd. The guarantee, by Congress, of equal suffrage to
all loyal men inthe South was demanded by every con
sideration of public safety, of gratitude and of justice,
and must be maintained, while the question of suffrage
in all the loyal States properly belongs to the people of
those States. , . a
3d. We denounce all forms of repudiation as a na
tional crime, and the national honor requires the pay
ment of tire public indebtedness, in the utmost good
faith, to all creditors, at home and abroad,, not only
according to the letter, lint the spirit of the laws
under which tt was contracted.
4th. H indue to Hie labor of the nation that taxation
should be equalised and reduced as rapidly as the na
tional faith will permit.
Btb. The national debt, contracted, as it has been, for
the preservation of the Union for all time to come,
should be extended over a fair period for redemption,
and it is tire duty of Congress to reduce tire rate of In
terest thereon, whenever it can honestly be done.
6th. That the best policy to diminish Our burden of
debt is to so improve one credit that capitalists will seek
to loan us money at lower rates of interest than w e now
pay, ami must continue to pay, so long as repudiation,
partial or total, open or covert, is threatened ur stia
pected.
7th. Ihe Government of the United States sb on Id be
administered with the strictest economy, aiid the cor
ruptions which have been so sharaefußy nursed and
fostered by Andrew Johnson call loudly Ter r tdjcal re
form.
Sth. We profoundly deplore the untimely and tr agic
death of Abraham Lincoln, and regret the accession of
Andrew Johnson to the Presidency, who has acted
treacherously to the people who elected him- and the
cause be was pledged to support: has usurped high
legislative aud judicial functions; lias refused to exe
cute the laws; has used bis high office to induce other
officers to ignore and violate tire laws ; has employed
his executive powers to render insecure the property,
peace, liberty aiuj life of the citizen; has abused the
pardoning power; lias denounced the National Legisla
ture as unconstitutional; haa persistently and corruptly
resisted, by every measure ia his power, every proper
attempt at the reconstruction of the States lately in re
bellion; has perverted tire public patronage into an.
engine of wholesale corruption; suit has been justly
impeached for high mimes and misdemeanors, aud
properly pronounced guilty thereof by the Vote of
thirty ilve Senators.
IHh. The dofctxiire of Grout Britain pgl other European
powers, that because a man ts Once a subject. Ire is
always so, must be resisted at every hazard by the
United States, as a relic of rhe feudal time, not autlior
. wed by the law of nations, and at war with our national
honor and independence. Natmwlfeed citizens are enti
tled to be protected in all their rights of citizenship as
though they were natural burn, and no citizen of the
United States, native or naturalized, must be liable to
arrest and imprisonment, by any foreign power, for acts
done, or words spoWn, tn this country, and if so arrested
and imprisoned, it is the duty of the Government to
interfere in his behalf.
both, Os all who were faithful in the trials of the lute
war, there were none entitled to more especial honor
than the brave soldiers. mid seamen, who endured the
hardships of the campaign and cruise, and imperilled
their lives in tile .service of tho country. The bounties
and pensions provided by law for these brave defenders
of the nation are ebliagtlous never to Ire forgotten. The
widows and orphans of the gallant dead are the wards of
the people, a sacred legacy bequeathed to tire nation’s
protecting rare. ‘ ’
11th. foreign immigration, winch m the past bus
added so much to the Wealth, development of resources,
and increase of power of this nation, the asylum Os the
oppressed of all nations, should be festered and encour
aged by a liberal and just policy.

IF BAD THE FOLLOWING LETTER FROM
k Rev. R. Telford, Missionary in China, now
visiting his home in Pennsylvania:
Washikgtoh, Pa., June 25, 1866.
Menr». Perry Davisd: Son, Providence,R. I.:
Dear Sirs--Diujug a residence of some ten
years as a Missionary in Siam and China, I found
yorir vegetable Pain Killer a most. valuable
remedy for that fearful scourge, the. Cholera.
In administering the medicine, 1 found it most
effectual to give a teaspoonful of Pai.i) Kilter iu a
gill of hot water sweetened with sugar; then,
after about fifteen minutes, begin to givfe a table
spoonful of the same mixture every minute Until
relief was obtained. Apply hot applications to
the extremities. Bathe the stomach with Pain
Killer, clear and rub the liiubs Jiriskly. Ot those
who had the cholera, and took the medicine faith
fully. in thertvay stated above, eijfht out. of ten
recovered. Yours, truly,
R TELFORD.
If an attack with Diarrhoea, Dysentery, or
Cramp Cota. don’t delay the use of. the Pain
Killer. B'oM by all medicine dealers Price, 25
cents, 56 cents,-and $1 per bottle.
Manhattan, Kansas, April 17,
Gentlemen— * * * 1 want to say a little
more about the Pain Killer. I consider it a very
valuable mediehte, and always keep it on hand,
fliave travelled a good deal since I have been in
Kansas, and never -without taking it with nre.
In my practice I used it freely for the Asiatic
Cholera, ia 1819, and with better success than any
Other medicine; I also used it here for cholera in
1855, with the same good result.
Truly, yonrs, A. HUNTING, M. D.
Swato, China.
Choleta I * * * I regret to say that the
cholera has prevailed here of late to a fearful
extent. Tor the last three weeks, from ten to
fifty or sixty fatal cases each day has been re
ported. I should add that life Pain Killer, seat
recently from the Mission House, has been used
with considerable success during this epidemic..
Iftaken iu season is generally effectual in check
ing the disease,

Summer Complaint and Dysentery.
Bowel complaints seem just now to be the
prevailing element, and any medicine that is
everywhere acceptable, and that is reliable, is a
very desirable acquisition. From what we have
seen, heard, and experienced, wo believe Davis'
Pain Killer is this desideratum. For the best
method of using it, we quote from the directress:
“For common bowel complaints, give one tea
spoonful in agill of new milk and molasses, in
equal parts, stirred well together; lessen the dose
for children, according to the age. If the pain be
severe, bathe tlie bowels and baek with tire medi
cine. This mode of traaliaeat is good in cases ot
lhechelwa morbus, sudden stoppages, etc. Re
peat the dose every hour.
“The quickest way I ever saw the dysentery
cured was by taking one spoonful of the Pain
Killer in one giil of milk aud inolassea stirred
well together'aud drank hot, at the same time
bathing the bowels freely with uiediciue. Let
the dose be repeated every hour until the pattent
is relieved."
If every person who has reason to fear this
disease weald provoke tlremaelves witli a bottle
of thia medicine, and use as occasion required, we
believe a great amount of suffering and sickness
would be saved. je!2—2m
