SATURDAY MORNING August 2'J, 18S8
GRANT AND PEACE.
In General Grant’s letter of acceptation
the country has an assurance of law, enter
and pence, from a man who lias never
violated a pledge once given. General
Grant, in Lis letter of acceptance, makes
the most unequivocal pledge of peace.
General Blair, in his letter seeking the
nomination, and in his speech accepting the
nomination, threatened war. Inorder that
j the people may better compare the spirit
of the two, we place extracts from each
side by side:

IIKELBLIIAN rUATFOKrI.
The National Republican party of the United States,
assembled In National CMveMlon, in the city of Chi
cago, ou the HOth day of May, ISOS, make the following
Declaration of Priucinles :
let. We congratulate the country on the assured euc
ceaa of the reconstruction policy of Congress, as
eviuced by the adoption, iu a majority ut the States
lately in rebellion, of Constitutions securing equal civil
and political rights to all, and regard it as the duty of
the Govermneul to sustain those insUUrtvma, and to
prevent the people of sucu States from beihg remitted
to a state or anarchy. j
3d. The guarantee, by Congress, ot equal suffrage tn
all loyal men In the South was demanded by every con
sideration of public safety, of gratitude and of justice,
and must he maintained, while the question of suffrage
in all theloyal States properly belongs to the people of
those States. . „ .
Sil. We denounce all forms of repndlatlon as a na
tional crime, and the national honor requires the pay
ment of the public indebtedness, in the utmost good
faith, to all creditors, at home and abroad, hot only
according to the letter, but the spirit of the laws
under whioh it was contracted.
4th. It is due to the labor of the nation that taxation
should be equalized and reduced as rapidly as the na
tional faith will permit.
sth. The national debt, contracted, os it has been, tor
thb preservation of the Union for ail time to come,
should be extended over a fair period for redemption,
and it is the duty of Congress to reduce the rate of in
terest thereon, w henever it can honestly be done.
nth. That die beat policy to diminish our burden of
debt is to ao Impros c our credit that capitalists will seek
to loan us money at lower rates of interest than we now
pay, and must continue to pay, so long as repudiation,
partial or total, open or covert, is threatened or sue
itPCt.C4i
7th. The Government of the United States should be
administered with the strictest economy, and the cor
ruptions widen have been so shamefully nursed aud
fostered by Andrew Johnson call loudly for ridkal re
forab.i
Sih. We profoundly deplore the untimely and tragic
death of Abraham IJucoln, aud regret the accession of
Andrew Johnson to tho Presidency, who has acted
treacherously to the people who elected him and the
cause he was pledged to support; has usurped high
legislative and Judicial functions; has refused to exe
cute the laws; lias used his high office to induce other
officers to ignore and violate the laws; has employed
his executive powers to render insecure the property,
peace, liberty and life of the citizen: has abused the
pardoning power; has denounced the National. Legisla
ture mi unconstitutional; has persistently and corrapUy
resisted, by every measure In bls power, every proper
attempt at the reconstruction of the States lately in re
bellion ; bas perverted tho public patronage into an
engine of wholesale corruption; and has been Justly
impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and
properly pronounced guilty thereof by the vote of
thirty-five Senators.
9th. Tlie doctrine of Great Britain and other European
powers, that because a man is once a subject, be is
always so, must be resisted at every hazard by the
Uniled States, as a relic of the feudal time, not author
ized by the law of nations, and at war with our national
honor and independence. Naturalized citizens are enti
tled to be piotectcdjn all their rights of citizenship as
though they were natural born, and no citizen of the
United States, native or naturalized, must lx liable to
arrest and imprisonment, by any foreign power, for acts
done, or words spoken, in this country, and if so arrested
and imprisoned, it Is the duty of the 6kivornment to
interfere in his behalf.
10th. Os all who were faithful in the trials of the late
war, there were none entitl'd to more especial honor
than the brave soldiers and seamen, wbo endured the
hardships of the campaign and cruise, and imperilled
tlieir lives in the service of tho country. The bounties
and pensions provided by law for these brave defenders
of the nation are obliagtiuns never to be forgotten. The
widows and orphans of the gallant dead are the wards of
the people, a saered legacy bequeathed to the nation’s
protecting care.
11th. Foreign immigration, which in the past lias
added so much to the wealth, development of resources,
and increase of power of this nation, the asyhnn of the
oppressed of alt nations, should be (bstergd and encour
aged by a liberal and Just policy.
12th. This Convention declares its sympathy with all
tlie oppressed people which are struggling for their
rights.

Summer Complaint and Dysentery.
Bowel complaints seem just now to lie the
prevailing element, and any medicine that is
everywhere acceptable, and that is reliable, is a
very desirable acquisition. From what we have
seen, heard, mid experienced, we believe Davis'
Pain Killer is this desiderstum. j'or the best
method of using it, we quote from tho directions:
“For common bowel complaints, give one tea
spoonful in a gill of new milk mid molasses, in
equal parts, stirred well together; lessen the dose
for cluldreff, according to the age. If the pain be
severe, bathe the bowels aud back with tho medi
cine'. This inode of treatment is good in cases of
tlie cholera morbus, sudden stoppirft&, etc. Re
peat the dose every hour.
“The quickest way I ever saw the dysentery
cared was by taking one spoonful of the Pain
Killer in one gill of tuilk and nioUnoes stirred
welt together and drank hot, nt tl* same trine
bathing tlie bowels freely with medicine. Let
tlie dose be repeated every hour until the patient
is relieved.’’
If every person who has reason to fenr this
disease would provide themselves with a bottle
of this medicine, and use as occasion required, we
belie ve a great amount of suffering and sickness
would be saved. jcl2—2m
