FRIDAY MORNING,. ■' Dec- 33,
CHRISTMAS CAROL.

•• Christmas sonics but '>nof a yckr.
The rose. it is the h>v<- of June,
I'he violet th:it of Spring;
Out on the faithless and failing flower-
That make the south wine’** wing
Such craven blooms 1 hold in scorn
The holly’s the wreath for tt (Jhrislinro worn.
Its Itorries are red a»o maiden's lip.
Its lenvea are of changeless green ;
\nd mtyflilm- changeless now, I know,
Is somewhat rare to be seen.
The hollv. which full mid frost has home,
The holly’s the wraith for a Christmas morn.
Its edges file in keen ticruy.
They are fairy weapon# h ued ;
And in au unlucky world like ours
Tis as well t<> be prepared.
Like the crest of ti warrior worn.
The holly's the wreath for u (.Ibriatuias morn.
It was 1 w ith England’s olden rtiCC-
But, alas I in tins our day
We think so much of the jiresi-jit time.
That we cast the past away.
I.et us do as they did ere we were born
The holly's the wreath for a ( hri«tnins morn.
The holly, it is no green house plant.
But glows in the common air;
In the peasant's lattice, the castle hall.
its green leaves alike are then-.
I f its lesson ind mind lie borne.
The holly’s the wreath fora Christinas morn.
Destruction of lhe City of Alamos-
Thousands of Lives Lost.
Tbe city of Alamos, situat ed in the
southern portion of Sonora, Mexico,
has been swept out of existence by a
visitation of natnrt —namely, a com
bined attack.of two great furies, wind
and water. The terrible event occur
red during the great sea stonn, lasting
from the 15th to the 18th ultimo. The
New York Herald publishes tlie fol
lowing details from a private letter:
On the 15th it commenced to rain, and on
the 16th a genuine rain mid wind set in,
lasting until lhe 18th. It seemed as if the
very floodgates of heaven had opened, and
that a second deluge was upon the world.
The wind, too, roared with qrcAdful fury,
and all the elements seemed combined for
some dreadful carnage. We little thought
what was in store for our beautiful city.
But soon the tide was told and the destrac
tion complete, or almost complete. Tlie
storm lasted until late in the evening of five
18th. During ib continuance it appeared an
if no human being could live within its
reach. Tlie Alamos river was swollen to a
great height, and in its wild, headlong
course, carried everything before it. ITousos
were swept away like so many straws, and
whole blocks <‘>f buildings were thrown
down likeso ntfuiy tre-js. The Wind was no
less terrible than the water. Houses were
unroofed and blown to shatters; tiles and
like materials Were swiUt-rud through the air
like-chaff, and strong trees tpere uprooted,*
as if they hurt been' cornstalks. Thu wit
jxii-t. of the city is totally destroyed. About,
the only buildings saved, worthy of mention,
arc the mint, the church, and the old State
College. These stood on high grounds, and
this adviiulage,. with their solidity, naval
them.
Dr. Hill, an Ameiicim rusidenl, had three
houses carried away, ami is loser to the
amount of about Mr. T. Robinson
Bonrs, an American doing -a linking busi
ness here, had his banking house swcptniwny.
Others have suffered severely. Tbe loss of
life has been' ipiite large, Sixty dead bodies
have Ix-en picked up. Sotne'of them Were
mangled fearfully, and <vttld scarcely be
recognized. Many of tlie bodies were found
miles down the river? Undoubtedly the
number found will be largely htcreased by
oilier unfortuuaU ones. I have written you
these few lines hurriedly, but do not attempt
t<> ikscrilJCTir explain this most extraorsii
nary phenomenon of n seventy-two hours’
whirlwind tttid deluge.
The ruined city or Ahunos was the Athens
<•* Niaihn csici ii ‘uekliii, or, nl least, had
that reputation. Its women w ere reputed to
be the loveliest and most intelligent through
out the republic, and Its citizens were highly
-poken of as contrasted With I host: of other
populations. There .was a great deal of
wealth, relinemcnt and luxury among the
belter classes. It trine a .sort’ of sanctified
.Jerusalem, where the proud Spanish blood
and brain held iigceudauoy and would not be
poisoned with contact with Indian and negro
mixture. Alamos, as u city, luul fame before
the great metropolis of \cw York was
known. It is old among the many old towns
of Mexico. Surrounding it have been some
of the richest mines hi the world, and from
which the city lias had its chief support. At
the time of its destruction it contained npop
ulat ion of about7ooo souls, though geograph -
real dictionaries place tbe number at 10,000,
which Is at least 3,000 too many. Unhappily
for its people, the number is lessened through
a terrible misfortune, and the “City of Pop
lar Groves’' lias fallen to the dust (even as
man falls! in its strength.

A Romance in Texas Life.
Mies Guest and a young lady friend
—-Miss Seale—having paid o visit ot;
horseback to the family of Mr. Ignore,
in .Brazos county, Texas, that gentle
man, ou their return, escorted them
home. Miss Guest was iu flic habit of
wearing a small Demuger pistol, from
the fact of having had to travel alone
to Eastern Texas not long after the
war closed. She bad it on her person
at the time iu question. As they were
riding along, this pistol, from some
cause,'exploded in theelothes of Miss
Guest, mid Bp wounded one of her
fingers that it had to lie removed by
amputation.
During her confinement from this
hurt, she was visited by Mrs. Lenore,
and urged to visit her again when she
recovered. When she recovered she
and Miss Seals again visited the hoftsc
’ •of Mr. Ignore. While there a game
of cards was proposed. While Mr.
Lenore was assorting the cards from
tlx? drawer of a table, Miss Seals
. standing by his side and Miss Guest
rather behind him, he espied his
pistol in the drawer, and, handing it
over his shoulder to Miss Guest,,
remarked, “How does this pistol com
pare with yours She took it, and
while examining it, the pistol went
off, killing Mr. Leaore instantly.
Although there is nothing in all
this to give any plausibility' even to
an accusation of wrong intent, yet
some of the fr-ienda of the unfortunate
deceased prosecuted Miss Guest for
murder. Bui the prosecution came to
nothing, as it ought to have done.
The District " Attorney entered a
nolle prosequi, the defense
demanded a trial.
We take pleasure in rcoahlmg the
fuel thnt our able fellow lowasnuin,
Judge P. W. Gray, volunteered for
the defense of Miss Gnwt, and went up
t<> Bryan for that sjieeial pnrpoftc.

standing and good culture, and i« well
