FRIDAY MORNING, FEB 2, 186#
A SmMioltko Incidbnt.—The Port
land Advertiser relate# the following
amusing incident of smuggling on the
borders : A keen custom house official
on the American side of the St. Croix,
met a woman crossing a bridge with a
bundle in her arms. “What have you
there?” he demanded. She hesitated,
(taminCred, and* then said, “nothing
dutiable.” He insisted on seeing it,
the refused, a struggle ensued; at last
she yielded, and placed the bundle in
his arms, saying “take it then, and much
good may it do you.” Then she return
ed to St. Stephen, whilst he made for
the light to examine his treasure, which
proved to be an. infant a-few days old.
The mother has been undiscovered, the
Poor-boUse officials refuse to take the
child, and so the energetic officer is al
lowed to enjoy the whole capture.
The Mayor’s Court.— A votary of
“the art preservative of all arts,” having
a plenty of coins, we presume, got drunk
and disorderly in the streets, when a
policeman gave chase, and he was locked
up for the balance of the night. He
appeared at the bar next morning,
aud had the pleasure of hearing the
Mayor sri'e&him in a line of two dollars,
which, we hope, will put a stop to his
frolicking.
