LOCAL MATTERS.
AnrEßTisiXG.—The Griffin Star says :
“A gentleman who has travelled a great
deal, remarked to us the oth* r day, that he
considered the advertising columns of a
newspaper as infallible mirrors of the busi
ness of a place. The fact has been estab
lished, that not only d«»es advertising and
merit open the way to ortune, bur those
who advertise are more liberal dealers; and,
inasmuch as they keep themselves and their
wares constantly before the public, it is cer
tain evidence tl.at they have what »hey ad
vertise. and are an.vous to secure customers
whom they will exert themselves to retain
by liberal dealing. We ran point to our
advertising columns w ; th pleasure, and
would say to our -‘riends, by all uk n>
bestow your patronage upon those whose
advertisements ihere appear, as they will be
found to be honest, liboral-mdidcd and ac*
eoimnoda’ing men in business. Mark this."
And what the Star says we cau say also
for ourself; and this reminds us that we
beard one of our most sagacious business
men observe the other day that the Press
was the best advertising medium because it
went into almost every family in the city,
and could, therefore, bring his business be
fore a greater number of people than any
other journal could. He is not alone in
this tespect. A great many of our business
people agree with him, as our advertising
columns will show; and others who have
not yet taken a proper view of this subject,
will, we feel sure, upon reflection, follow
their example. It stands to reason then, in
the first place, that it is a benefit to every
body to make their business known* to
the public; and in the second place, that
the most proper way to make it known is to
advertise in a paper having the largest cir
culation. That is what the Daily Press
has, and it is therefore, to the interest of the
business public to avail themselves of its
advertising columns.
Gas and Steam Fitting and Plumb
ing.—C. A. Rubbe has opened a gas and
steam fitting and plumbing establishment
in rear of 272 Broad street, Concert Hall
place, where he will do all work in his line
at reasonable terms. We take pleasure in
recommending Mr. Rnbbe'a establishment
to the patronage of the public.
New Publication.—We have received
from Messrs. Quinn A Bro.. Frank Lettley't
Magazine for March, and otb*»r works. The
magazine is an interesting number.
Messrs. Quinn A Bros, have all the latest
publications for at their d**pot, Broad
street, opposite Monument str et.
The Municipal Election.— We pub
lish this mooning a fall ticket for Mayor and
Coui cil, at ths approaching municipal elec
tion, which will be found in our advertising
column 4. We presume that there will be
other candidates for Mayor and Council, and
the people will then have an opportunity of
making their selections.
Plant Yol k Garden.— That is very
good advice just about this time; but you
must first procure the seeds, and to do this
you,can go to our friend Peinble's, on
Washington street, near Broad, where you
can obtnin a great variety suitable for this
locality.
Auction Sale. —B. Phillips, 282
Broad street, advertises an auction sale of
fancy and staple dry goods, ready-made
slothing, and other goods, on Monday next,
March 12th, 1866. This will afford an op
portunity to secure articles at a bargain, wo
reckon.
Crockery, China and Glassware. —
Messrs. Lathrop, Mustin A Cos., announce
hat they have removed their stock of
rockery, glassware, etc., to more conveni
nt premises, No. 274 Broad street, where
ley will exhibit a splendid assortment of
oods, and sell them at reasonable rates,
ive them a call.
Sundries. —Everybody knows Bill—
asbington street, near Broad, has for sale
lot of sundries; such as apples, cocoanut*,
an gee, white beans, lemons, cabbages, and
1 rious other articlos of domestic use. Don’t
■get Wil.iam’s establishment when you
to make your purchases.
Spring Goods, in profusion, have
1 in received by I. Kahn A Cos. Bead their
1 rertieement in another column.

Theatre.—A very attractive bill is
offered at Concert Hall for this evening,

Love Chase,” and the laughable farce of
“Poor Pillicoddy.” The splendid legend
ary spectacle of the “Sea of Ice,” is in re
hearsal and will soon be presented.
Seats can be secured at Schreiner’s Music
Store, od Broad street.
Lozenges (who don’t like them) are
advertized in another column by T. Savage
Heyward A Sons. Also, these gentlemen
have some of the most choicest liquors,
which they announce to-day. It makes us
feel bad when we allude to spirituous sub
jects, therefore we ask you to visit 241 Broad
Street and he satisfied.
Alarm of Eire.—There was an alarm
of fire about 4 o’clock on Monday morning
last which proceeded from premises some,
where in rear of tho Exchange Hotel. Little
or no damage was done.
River News.—Arrived Sunday, Union.
Departed same day, Swan.

in another column that he has improved
facilities for performing all operations in
his line. If you want old teeth p illed out,
or new ones put in, call on Dr Wright. He
guarantees satisfaction. Office at the old
stand, 266 Broad street.
