SUNDAY MOH.MNU March If, Ifff
[For th« Daily Pres*.]
The Serpent of Hie Howl.
Beware ! the bowl though clear and bright,
Its contents sparkle in the light,
Within its depths there lurks a form,
W’hose painted breath is fraught with harm ;
A serpent colled—whoso deadly fangs
Will rend thy soul with fiercest pangs.
With promise fair,
Os pleasure rare.
It spreads a sure decoy.
But, oh, beware !
The fatal snare
Lures only to destroy.
In youth and fortune’s halcyon honrs
The bowl is wreathed with fairest flowers ;
Unknown the serpent’s fearful powers,
Unseen the storm that threatening lowers,
While securing friends with smiles so bright,
Bid thee, “Come, only drink to-night.”
And with a shout
They all cry out,
Cotne on ! let’s all be gay.
'Tis pleasure’s cup,
Fill up ! Fill up !
Am) drive dull care away.
But, oh ! when youth and wealth have
flown—
When pride and honor all are gone,
The cruel friends that day by day
Lured thee in folly’s path to stray,
HaVe gone and left thee all alone,
By 6haine and misery overborne;
Aye -then thy heart
Will writhe and smart
With misery, grief and pain ;
Then naught but death
With his icy breath,
Can bring thee ease again.
When friends shall bid thee drink again,
Then, oh ! I pray, but once refrain,
And look—aye, look—down, deep below.
The ruby waves that sparkle so ;
There, see the form that dormant lies,
Glaring ou thee with eager eyes.
And then beware
Tbc fearful snare,
That serpent of the bowl,
Ere it en toils
Thee in its coils,
And robs thee of thy soul.

TO THE PLASTERS

I have now on hand and for sale, a large
number of MULES and HORSES, generally
from three to live years old, of the best
growth of the Western country —such as
are especially adapted to the business wants
of the community—and have arrangements
on hand which will enable me to supply a
very large demand during the winter .ind
spring. Myself a native of Kentucky, and
having formerly had an extensive connec
tion with this class of business, together
with the tact that I am now permanently
located in Augusta, I flatter myself that n:y
facilities arc unsurpassed for supplying this
market at the lowest possible rates consis
tent with a sound business. Purchasers are,
therefore, invited to call and examine my
stock, or send in their orders for anv num
ber or any class of either Mules or Horses
at market prices.
