LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION.
TUESDAY MORNING AphT 17. 18##
SCISSORS.
—A fire broke out at Pit Hole, Pa.,
lately, which destroyed property to the
amount of $15,000.
—General Grant went before a Jus
tice of tbe Peace, and paid a fine of five
dollars, imposed lor driving, fast, not long
since.
—General Marshall Lefferis, Engi
neer of the American Telegraphic Com
pany, has sailed in the steamer China
for Europe.
—The tributaries to the Mississippi
are all flooded to a great height, and
much damage to property is reported in
the interior of Illinois.
—The late election in Springfield,
111., resulted substantially in a Union
victory-, although the Democrats have
probably secured their Mayor by two o r
three majority.
—Through the representations of the
Hon. Benjamin Eggleston, to whom
many Western manufacturers find en
trusted the matter, the itays and Means
Committee have agreed to remove the
tax on red oil.
—Senator Wilson has recently re
ceived-a letter from Governor Hamilton,
of Texas, in which the latter briefly ap
pealed for relief to Congress, and pre
sents a most deplorable picture of the
public situation.
—A very important decision has just
been rendered by Judge Woodward, for
the United States District Court for
Virginia, sitting at Alexandria to the
effect that the President’s Proclamation
does not restore the writ of habeas cor
pus.
—Warrants for pardon were issued
from the Attorney General's office, by
direction of the President, for forty per
sons, the majority of whom are residents
of Georgia, Louisiana and Texas.
—The Brinsley Brothers, who have
been astonishing the San Francisco
people by ’performing all tile usual acro
batic feats on a horozontal bar attached
to a balioon, 1,000 feet in mid-air, are
coming East.
—lt is said that tHe distillery swill
fed cows of New York city- and vicinity
are suffering from pleuropneumonia,
the disease which proved so fatal to cat
tle in Massachusetts. The flesh of
these cattle is full of trichina?, and is
poisonous.
—The speech of Chief Justice Chase,
at a Centenary Meeting of the M. E.
Church, held in New York recently,
strongly urges the expediency and jus
tice of conferring the privilege of suf
rage upon the freedmeu.
Governor Hamilton, of Texas, de
clines to be a candidate for the office
he now holds by military appointment.
His main reason is that he is poor and
without a home, and cannot afford to
spare four years of his life in official
duties, where his family are in urgent
need of his labor.
—lt is understood that our Govern
ment has sent two or three armed ves
sels to the fishing grounds on the coast
of the British Provinces to protect our
fishermen who have been warned off by
the Provincials since the cessation of
the Reciprocity treaty.
—The DcYVitt (Iowa) Observer says :
“Jesse G. Royalty, who was taken not
long since to Fort Madison, to serve
three pears for having three livingwives,
has been discovered to have two more
at Springfield, Mo. Thus, this youthful
Brigham Young has five wives—besides
a black woman whom he engaged to
marry while they were confined in jail
at this place.”
—The Wisconsin Senate recently
passed resolutions condemning Senator
Doolittle’s course in voting against the
Freedmen’s Bureau and Civil Rights
Bills, and requesting his resignation of
the place he occupies. The vote stood
yeas 18, nays 11 ; two Union Senators
voting nay. The House passed the
same resolutions soon thereafter by a
vote of 52 to 23.
—The Fenian excitement at East
port, Maine, continues. The Fenians
are holding meetings in the town hall,
and members of the order are constant
ly arriving. The British authorities are
making preparations for the defence of
Campo Bello Island. It is rumored
that in view of the representations of the
British Minister, the President will issue
a proclamation warning the people not
to infringe the neutrality laws.
