LARGEST CITY OUCULATION.
WEDNESDAY MORNING...ApriI 18, 1888
I Am the Family Cat
I owl fold up my claws
In uiy soft veKrat paw*
And purr in the sun
Till the abort day i« done—
For I am the family cat.
I can do«e by the hour
In the Tine-covered bower.
Winking and blinking
Through aunahine and shower—
Fori am the family cat.
From the gooseberry huah.
Or where bright cdrrante blush,
I may suddenly spring
For a bird on the wing,
Or dart up a tree.
If a brown nest I see,
And select a choice morsel
For dinner or tea,
And no one to blame me,
Berate me or abnmo me—
For I am tho lumily cat.
In the cold winter night,
When the ground is all white,
And the icicles shine
In a long silver line,
I stay not to shiver,
In the moonboams’ pale quiver,
But curl up in the house
As snug as a mouse
And play Jacky Pornor
In the cosiest corner,
Breaking nobody’s laws,
With my chin on my paws,
Asleep with one eye and awake with the other,
For pats Iron: the children, kind words from
thS raothor, —
For I am the family cat.
Josh Billings’ Lecturing Said
Through the State of Maine.
I just returned from the State of
Maine. I went through the Stait end
ways. That iz tew say, from top tb bot
tom, I lektured as I went.
I like the inhabitants.
Everybody works in the State ov
Maine. Gentlemen of leizzure there are
called loafers. Maine iz bounded just
now as tollows : On the north by the
1 md of the deserters on the east by Asia,
on tho south by the great Atlantic salt
water privilege,on the west by the Rocky
Mountains.
The best produckshins of the Stait iz
men and wimmen. The winimen bav
more indigenous hair on their heads than"
you kan fiud in the whole ov the middle
States.
Everybody goes tew bed in the Stait
ov Maine at 9 o’clock p.m.
1 lektured at Gardiner—at 9 o'clock
aujence arose all tew oust, and, bidding
me a fond fairwell, said it wuz bed time.
I took the hint and stopt lekturing.
Bangor has soething less than one
hundred thousand inhabitants), about 75
thousand less, i belief).
Bangor aint the capital ov the Stait
at presant. It haz iho best tavern stand
i t the Stait. it is called the‘ - Bangor
House,” and iz kept bi Shaw. He and
I are cousins, by marrriage (we both
married femails).
Shaw iz a McClelland man, he has got
a boss with that name, ov the male
purswasbnn, who iz a graet deal faster
than the General that he was named
after waz.
I lektured in Bangor.
The thermometer was 1C degrees loss
than zero, and the spectators couldn't
absorb the lektur. The morning paper
said “sum liked the lectur and sum
didn’t”—this put me in mind of the para
ble in the Bible, about the 10 virgins,
they was effected in the same way, 5 waz
wize and 5 waz otherwize.
The churches in Bangor in their out
side appearance are kompliment tew the
cauze,i hcvn’tenny doubt the stokholders
are all ov them 4th proof.
I watt taken around the town bi Mr.
Shaw (my cousin), in a dciikate rig,
pulled bi 10,000 dollars worth ov natu
ral trotting property.
Bangor and its pleasant people are
morticed into mibnzzom—they are ten
ants there for life. If I ever go there
again I shaut fail to see them.
I also lektured in Lewiston, to a gush
ing house. Some of the aujence was
effected with tears. The Editor ov the
next day’s paper gave me a verry flat
tering notiss—a collum and a half, con
taining my whole lektur.
Ed. Sands (unkle to the grate sassa
parilla roote Sands) waz mi right bower,
while I waz in the State ov Main.
He is the general agent for the whole
State. I kan reccommend him to any—
young lady who wants to get a husband
who will be useful to her; or he would
make a tip-top secund husband for a
widder who hadn't had a fair shake the
fust time. He belongs to the temper
ance sosietv.
I also lektured in Dexter, an inland
town, aboutlo hundred mile in a westerly
direkshun from the city of London.
I gave a free lektur, and tew my sur
prise I had a full house. The hat was
shoved round at the close of the servises
and about 300 dollars (more or less) waz
ontrapped.
This place was named after the cele
brated trot'in hoss Dexter. Dexter can
trot (in private) in 2.06. I will bet
60 dollars ov it. (and I aint worth a sent
to bet) owing to a natural we akness.
I likewise lektured at Augustus, the
capital ov the Stait, and had a full house
ov benches. This was owing tew a
misunderstandiiigness about the weather.
The people offored tew turnout if I
would find the umbrellera, but we split
on the nmbrellers.
I could not dew miself justiss at Au
gustus. There want but one lady pres
ent in the hall, and me and the aujer.
waz awl the time looking at her.
What an awful state of things it would
be if the wimmen and the ladys should
awl be taken out ov this world, tew their
hums up in the skize 1 Wooden dolls
would advance 5 foot in a week.
