SUNDAY MORNING April 2" f3»«
LOOK FORWARD.
Ono year the nearer, wife.
A re wo to deal h ;
Time, love, that moeteth lire,
Garners our breath.
Let not thy dear face own
Look* of distress ;
_ If days of love are gone,
Sorrows are less.
~ Look forward cheerily—
Hope to the last!
Wouldst thou live wearily,
Cling to the past.
An Extraordinary Domestic Tra
dition. —The following extraordinary
domestic tradition is extracted from a
new book which is so much talked of
ia Europe : ‘’The Duke of Alba, tho
brother-in law of Napoleon 111, is a
short, little man, who has something
icy about his whole manner. Small
and weak, his face displays an alabaster
hue, which gives him a ghost-like ap
pect. In Spain the story is current tbit
the Duke was buried before he was
horn. When his mother was enceinte
with him she was taken so desperately
ill that all the attempts to restore her
remained fruitless. The Duchess died
far from Madrid, at a chateau which
had always been her favorite residence.
She was buried in the family vault: and
as it is the custom of the Spanish no
bility, several valuables, among others
her rings were put into the coflin. The
treasures which had been left to ob
livion with the Duchess aroused the
cupidity of some ruffians ; the broke
into the vault on the night following the
funeral, robbed the dead woman, and
would not leave the coflin till they
had plucked a flashing diamond ring
irom the finger of the corpse. The dia
mond was on the little finger, and would
not come’ off. This gave tho body
snatchers the truly cannibal idea of cut
ting the linger. The pain aroused the
apparently dead woman ; she came to
her senses, sat up in the-coffin, and, by
her unexpected waking, put the robbers
to flight. When they departed they
forgot to close the vault. The Duehes3
found sufficient strength to quit her
coffin and return to the chateau, where
she was at first taken for a ghost, and a
Priest was called in to exercise it, hut
as he was unable to banish the spectre,
the people in the chateau gradually
began to believe in her corporeal exist
ence. The duchess recovered, and gave
birth to a boy, who has never lost the
deadly palor which he brought into the
world with him.
—One of the wickedest and most suc
cessful hoaxes perpetrated on the first of
April this year wa3 the work of a lady
in Philadelshia. She sent up to the
pulpit, in a Methodist church, a notice
purporting to announce a meeting in
aid of another church. A number of
names of prominent clergymen were
mentioned as to take part in the exer
cises. The preacher road the manu
script to his large congregation without
hesitation, until he c.-iine to a passage
announcing that a certain layman would
sing a comic song, when he became
confused suddenly, remembered the day
and abruptly sat down.
—The drivers of all the street cars in
New York City have all joined in the
strike for an advance of fifty cents per
day. Up-town residents have to foot it.

Georgia Home Insurance Company.
fT IS WITH PLEASURE THAT AV E
I copy the following notice of the abote
Company from the Atlanta New Era. In thin
commmiity, It* reliability aud prompt in
immediately paying all lo*B©m is well known,
and renders it au institution of pride to our
citisenN. its ottmers are courteous gentlemen,
with years of experience in the business, to
which* fact, coupled with their eminent fitness
for the position, its remarkable prosperity
must be mainly attributed. The Era so vs :
Acts Spfai Louder tiun Words.—We arc
gratified to learn on inquiry that the Insurance
Company w*hich paid ho promptly its loss by
the nre on the corner of Whitehall anil Decatur
streets, is aSouthern Company, and none other
than that reliable institution of our State. The
liKOROIA Hows iNSORAXCXCOSIPANY Os Columbus,
of whi-h Mr. Jno. C. Whitner is Agent. The
payment was made within twelve hours After
the first erv of fire was heard, whilst smoke
was still issuing from the ryins. No third
party came forward to sift and feel about for
flaws, but the Agent issuing the policy also
makes the payment just so soon as satisfied of
its justness.
We ask our merchants and citizens to note
these facts. The cry has been raised that all
Southern Companies were totally ruined. The
answer to this is, their investments were mado
before the war, and were never changed. Their
loss, therefore, was merely the profits and iho
labors for four /ears —though some, like tho
Georgia Home, have even come out better than
they entered the war. It is false that they aro
insolvent. A moat remarkable feature of
Southern Companies is the absence of‘‘Special
Agents” and “Adjusters” to settle up losses.
They go on the presumption that the. man they
appoint as agent is honest and capable, sulh
cientlv so to t o entrusted with the responsible
duty of making out a policy promising to pay
vuu in case of loss, and suttieieiit) v so nriopay
tin losses when they do occur. When, there
fore, you insure with them, your -last transac
tion is with the s*mo man—your friend, your
neighbor, your lellow-citizen—with whom your
first occurred , .
We do not mean to be sectional in our ad
vice, but we do think when we can build up
ourselves and our ow n people at the same cost
and with greater aovantage to ourselves, it is
our dutv to do so. There arc* a number of
Southern Companies represented here who are
perfectly reliable.
Call on that experienced Insurance man and
noble Southern gentleman, Mr. Whitner. at
Mc.Cainy <t Co.’s Drugstore, and he will give
you a list that w ill surprise you.
