TUESDAY MORNING ’April *, 186#
SCISSORS. |
—Col. Rol ert Annan, of Emmitts
burg. M'L, and formerly a member of the
Legislature and State Convention in
ISSO, died Inst week.
—A girl, not fourteen years of ape
died recently in Smithfiidd, N. Y.. from
an overdose of arsenic, which she had
been taken in large quantities for a series
of weeks iu order to itnptore her com
plexion.
—On the sth instant a fire occurred at
Edinburg. Ind.,involving a loss of $ >,OOO,
The Johns in House, Ricketts, MeCor.
mick & Co.'s distillery, aud other prop,
erty were consumed.
—A locomotive on a Western Rai'
Road has been adorned with the title,
‘‘l still live.’’ That is more than many
of the passengers cun say, at the end of
their journey.
—The great bridge across the Ohio
river at Cincinnati is said to be nearly
completed. It is two thousand feet loop
ami one of the spans, measuring nearly
eleven hundred feet, is said to be the
lonpest in the world.
—General Sheridan orders that all
persons embarking from New Orleans
I for Vera Cruz. Tampico, or Matamoras.
Mexico, must have passports from the
Provost Marshal. The order causes
much remark iu the New Orleans papers,
which say it is against the Confederate
colonies.
—The Civil Rights law is to be trsted
in the Memphis Courts. The statutes
of Tennessee prohibit negroes from
beeping drinking and billiard saloons ;
and several cases are now pending,
maintaining that under the new laws all
men are on an equal footing as to busi
ness pursuits.
* —The Secretary of the Treasury has
directed the Commissioner of the (In
ternal Revenue that in the assessment, of
wrrrttwl Thermic,- faflill'ttr' WWI'-llSffl^rff^
quired to make return for the value of
their farm products consumed by them
selves aud families.
—Geneial Sheridan has received a
very elegant testimonial from a friemi in
Mexi< o. It consists of a full set o!
equipments for a saddle horse, fashioned
after the Mexican style, and valued at he.
tween $2,000 and $3,000. The saddle
is heavily trimmed with beaten silver;
elie housing thickly embroidered in gold,
silver and silk; and the bridle is com
posed of silver chains and silk embroid.
ered leather.
—The London “On!” reports that '‘the
example ol the United States, who pro
p se asserting their vastuess of ideas aud
anus by a change of name, lias sugges
ted to several other nations similar chan
gesinthe names by which they are now
known. As the United States are in fu
ture to be simply styled America, Spain
wishes to be known as the Other Amer
ica; Prussia intends to call herseltG .r
many; and France announces herself as
| henceforward Europe.”
—ln view of the Fenian demonstra
tions on the frontier of Maine, the Navy
Department has sent to East port, in that
.State, the steamer Winooski. The third
class iron clad Miantonoinah and the
paddle-wheel steamer Ashelot will con
stitute part of the fleet to be dispatched
by the Secretary of the Navy to the
Gull of St. Lawrence, for the protection
of American fishermen.
—When a lady (we are talking of a
lady in the full height of fashion, says
the London Punch ) has got her bonnet
and gloves on, and is perfectly ready
with her parasol in hand, she always
goes back to the looking glass to take
a last fond look. Upon asking ‘‘a
dear handsome duchess” if this were
not the truth, and the beautiful truth,
she had the charming candor to state :
“Yes, my dear Punch , it is the truth,
but not all the truth. No woman, take
my word for it, is satisfied with one
look. At least 1 know that I am not,
lor (and here our duchess laughed as
though she was pleased with herself and
all the world) I don’t mind telling you.
I invariably take four, our good ones.
The first look in the glass is for myself,
that's fair; the second look is for my
husband, that's nothing but just; the
third is for my friends, that only gener
ous; and the last is for my rivals, that's
human nature. If the last look satis
lies me, then I know it is all right, aud
I assure you I never take any more.”
