Office. Having fast, power presses, the best
material, and skilled workmen, enables us
to do Job Work at the lowest figures and
best inauner,
A Chamber of Commerce.
The merchants of Atlanta, Cl a., have
recently organized a Board of Trade,
or Chamber of Commerce, an institution
of great importance and usefulness in
any business community, and one which,
in our judgment, ought to be organized
in this city. Its advantages are daily
set forth in the following extracts from
a circular of the President of the At
lanta Board to the merchants of that
city, and we respectfully commend them
to the attention of the merchants and
business men of Augusta :
One of its primary and most important
objects is, to disseminato and’ inculcate
jast and equitable principles of trade—es
tablish ami maintain uniform commercial
usages among dealers—and to settle ami
cably, and without resort to protracted and
costly litigation, through committees elect
ed from among its meuibcss, any disputes,
difficulties or controversies growing out of
business transactions ; and, what is of
vastly more consoqucnce, prevent the
growth of ill-will and bad feeling between
tradesmen, as well as preserve and foster a
spirit of good will and fraternity. If tho
proposed Association should accomplish no
more than this, it will repay its members for
the attention it will requiro them to be
stow upon it, or any expense they may
incur in sustaining it.
Through its active agency there will be
Fathered, classified and preserved in dura
ble form for future reference, statistics of
tho trade of tho city—receipts by rail road
and otherwise—sales and shipments—and
in fact, all information that is now, or may
hereafter to the mercantile
interests of the city.
Its rooms will afford a place where
persons engaged in business can meet
daily and statedly, and exchange views on
finance, and all articles and matter* of
trade, and by exhibiting samples of com
modities and closing largo contracts, great
ly facilitate business, and regulate and os
tublisli prices where marked differences
exist.
By having Gaugers, Inspectors and
Weighers of its own appointment, the Asso
ciation will secure uniformity in grades,
quality and quantity of all articles of trade
—the marks and brands of these officers
being tho governing standard.
Through its agency, telegraphic reports,
accessible to the members of tho Association,
can be obtained from all places it is impor
tant* to hear from, at a trifling cost to each.
In the best regulated and most successful
of these organizations, newspapers from the
great commercial centres are subscribed for
and received, and mercantile libraries es
tablished. The rooms will then become,
not only places of instructive resort for the
members of the Association, but will also
serve to attract to them those young men in
our employ who must soon lake our places
in the world of trade. Here they may be
come acquainted with the laws governing
trade in its most extended spheres, while
becoming acquainted with its practice in
the daily routine and multiplied transac
tions of the warehouse. and qualify them
selves to meet the grave responsibilities of
the high vocation they have chosen, with
••redit to themselves and honor to our be- l
loved young city. As it will thus serve to |
direct their minds from the damaging
fri 'olties and extravagancies to which they
ar: exposed during their Lours of leisure,
‘♦a benefits to both merchant and clerk
ennotbe overestimated. •
Thk Geary's in* Macon.—We took
great pleasure in commending .Mr. and Miss
Geary to our Macon friends, and wo see by
the papers of that city that these accom
plished artists have more than substantiated
all we said of them. The Evening Mirror
.says :
Tub Gone but. —There was a large and
fashionable audience at Concert llall last
night—and we have rarely seen a crowd
more thoroughly delighted, if close and re
pcotful attention and unbounded applause
nro to be taken as evidences. Mr. Geary
has a fine, rich tenor voice, and is an in ini
wuole actor. His Irish songs were capital,
an l brought down the house. Miss Geary’s
voice is not remarkable for power, but is
one of rare melody and freshness, and has
been finely cultivated. We were particu
larly pleased with tho naturalness of her
acting and singing. Tho concerted pieces
were sung with great taste and in most ex
quisite harmony. But wo have not room
or time to particularize. It is sufficient to
say that we never attended a concert which
seemed to pleaso more or was better calcu
lated to give perfect satisfaction, and are
glad to loaru that a complimentary benefit
has been tended to Miss Geary, to be given
on Monday evening next. Let it be a
bumper.
The following are the names appended to
the card tendering the complimentary bene
fit:
Rev. Father Hamilton, W B Johnston, .T
M Board man, IV’ A ltcid, E J Johnston, 8
B Burr, A Patterson, Harry J Neville, Dr
. Roosevelt, .J Bupplo, Rev 8 Boykin, Col P
B Whittle, If M Logan, Judge Locbranc,
Dr Andrews, Capt R Lambert, 1) Dunn,
Col. L N Whittle* D Daley, T Douglass, M
Edgerly. 1.,
The benefit was to have taken place last
night. Now, wo are pleased to learn of tho
success of these talented artists, but wo
don’t want them to stay away too long
Couldn’t they come back and favor us with
another of their recherche entertainments?
We fo;l sure it would be a success, as tLcir
Concerts must be wherever given.

ON THE CANAL.
Wouldst cast dull care away.
Throw sorrow to the winds,
And glad the hours with converse sweet,
’Mid bright congenial winds !
Your ledger close : your books
Lay idly on the shelf;
Direct your thoughts for one brief day
From dreams of fame or pelf.
What shall the pastime be ?
A Pio-Nic in the grove.
Where Nature’s every voice is tuned
To harmony and love.
For-ake the haunts of men
. For a few hours as least ;
Go forth among the birds and flowers,
Enjoy a rural feast.
Como, gallant Cavaliers.
* And bopnie lassies, all,
The ••Stonewall Jackson,” prince of boats,
Is ready at your call.
While gaily o’er tho wave,
Our barque glides swiftly along,
Wo’U glad the hours with laugh aud jest,
With music, dance and song.
And when tho day is gone, *
And moonlight gilds the wave,
The “goodly company” on board,
Fair maidens, manhood brave,
With Polka. Bchottische, Waltz,
May the glad hours employ
Each step elastic —full of life
Each pulse attend to joy.
**A life on Oecnn wave,”
We cannot offer you ;
But a trusty pleasure boat,
A Captain tried aud true.
Then bo ! fur the Locks ! come all,
Let the ‘‘Stonewall” speed away
With a cargo of glad hearts on board,
On a happy holiday.

THE HOME CIRCLE.
The undersigned proposes the
publication of a FAMILY JOURNAL
with the above title, to be commenced as
soon as the necessary arrangements can be
perfected.
It will be issued WEEKLY,’ at TWO
DOLLARS PER ANNUM, in advance; and
will contain a variety of interesting and
instructive reading matter, suitable to the
home circle, the field and the fireside.
It will be the aim of the publisher to
make it a welcome visitor to every Southern
family, and an acceptable substitute for
tiiose journals which are so inimical to our
section of the Uniou, and seem to take so
much pains to insult our people. He hopes
thus to build up a patronage in the South,
and shall spare neither efforts nor expeuse
to make it every way worthy of that patron
age.
Anew press has been ordered, and the
paper will be neatly and handsomely
Printed on large, clear Type; making it,
altogether, one of the most readable journ
als in tho country. •
