—lt is said that a Pittsfield Democrat,
who is more noted for his political
than wisdom, on being informed that
Connecticut had gone Republican, in
dignantly replied : “I don't care a fig,
the President will veto it.”
—lt is recorded that a soap merchant
was recently caught at sea during a
violent storm, when he saved his life by
taking a cake of his soap and washing
himself ashore. 3he soap, or the story,
must have been made of very strong lie.
—Dr. Johnson once dined with a

dinner. After the doctor had tasted it,
she asked him if it was good. "It is

to our mind, Gen. Buell alone, una
