TUESDAY MORNING...™-“«7 9, IMS
[From the Metropolitan Record.)
“Fold it up Carefully.”
The beautiful lines entitled “The Con
federate Banner," have been extensively
copied by the Southern press, aud are now
classed among the favorite poems of that
eeotion. The following reply, written in
England, comes to us from a friend in
Virginia, who says it was sent by the author
to a gentleman in that State, and that it has
not yet appeared in print.
A Reply to the Lines entitled "The Conquered
Banner.'’
BY 818 IIENRY HOCGIITON, BAIIT.
Gallant nation, foiled by numbers,
Say not that your hopes are fled ;
Keep that glorious flag which slumbers,
One day to avenge your dead.
Keep it, widowed, sunless mothers,
Keep it, sisters, mourning brothers,
Furl it with an iron will ;
Furl it now, but—keep it still ;
Think not that its work is doue.
Keep it till your children take it,
Once again to hftil aud make it
All their sires have bled and tought for,
All their noble hearts have sought for,
Bled and fought for all alone.
All alone ! aye shame the story,
Millions here deplore the stain.
Shame alas ! for England's glory,
Freedom called, aud called in vain.
Furl that banner, sadly, slowly,
Treat it gently, for *tis holy.
Till that day—yes, furl it sadly,
Then once more unfurl it gladly—
Conquered Banner—keep it still !
England, October , 1865.
Anti-Fenian Canadian Song.
Shoulder, then, to shoulder press,
Blow for blow, and nothing less,
Bravo, voluuteers !
Never shall we shame our sires,
Never pale our martial tires,
Till the vanquished foe retiros ;
Bravo, bravo, volunteors !
Weathkk Wisdom.
“March winds and April showers.
Bring forth May flowers
But then, to finish the rfidenza,
They also bring the influenza !
